What increase (like +item drops, +meat drops) does this require to become easier? --Gausie 11:56, 20 July 2007 (CDT)

  • If anything, increase your damage reduction and hit points. The only way to speed up this quest is to prolong combat as much as possible so it takes fewer adventures for a gremlin to decide to use its tool against you. --Quietust (t|c) 12:01, 20 July 2007 (CDT)

Choice of adventure location within the junkyard, and notification of where he last had his tools by Yossarian, seems to have no effect on when the tools can drop. This may not be as intended, but for now it's worth stasis-fighting each tool-dropping gremlin if you don't already have his tool, and just pick a part of the yard at random.--Feliks 08:58, 2 August 2007 (CDT)

    • I believe the page does mention that it is possible for other tools to be dropped in other areas. Or at least it used to. The page has had a lot of duplicated information culled from it at various times, and it is possible this particular tidbit was removed by accident. I or someone else will check that later. In any case, I believe you have the highest chance of encountering the tool-using monster when Yossarian tells you about that tool and you go to the indicated area, and so it is suboptimal to go to just random spots. It also seems possible that you have an increased chance of encountering the correct type of monster (not necessarily the tool using version) in the first few adventures in the right area; on every ascension I've seen the correct gremlin type on the first or second adventure. If the eruidite gremlin is the only one with the wrench and he never appears by the barrel, Why would Yossarian tell me this? --JEDII 18:05, 6 August 2007 (CDT)

If you do not finish this quest completely, and then visit the Junkyard after the war is over, Yossarian will pay you 1,500 meat for each tool you retrieved (one at a time). Does clicking a certain location have anything to do with this quest? Cause if you click a location, it takes you to snarfblat=139 and subsnarfblat=X where X depends on which location you click. But after you finish that fight, if you click Adventure Again (The Junkyard), it takes you to just snarfblat=139. Is this a bug? Shouldn't the subsnarfblat be in the Adventure Again link? Though it doesn't do this for the Haunted Wine Cellar either. --Wertyk 13:38, 17 September 2007 (CDT)

Strategy for prolonging the fight: Use the fascimile dictionary. It does absolutely nothing, and I did have the gremlins drop the tools in a reasonable period of time. Maybe switch that for the turtle totem on the main page? Thelisafaerie 11:05, 21 March 2008 (CDT)

If the Gremlin reveals the tool and you accidentally kill it, have you blown your only opportunity at getting the item? I've spend over 100 adventures questing after the hammer Over Where the Old Tires Are with no luck, but I impatiently plowed through a chance to get the hammer a couple dozen adventures ago.--Ehsteve 23:42, 6 June 2008 (CDT)

  • No, I assume you were using the adventure again links, which don't work at the moment. I added a bug notice because not everybody knows about that bug, and it's pretty serious. If you keep adventuring in the right area (by manually selecting it every time) then the quest is not so bad. --JiK4eva 11:19, 11 June 2008 (CDT)

I retrieved all 4 tools and finished the quest in six (yes, 6 - I didn't believe it either) turns by selecting each subzone manually, and changing to a different subzone after finding a tool. I fought two extra vegetable gremlins but the other 4 adventures yielded the tools. Blessed by the RNG??? I am a TT with Tao permed and over 1000 damage absorption, so they hit for <10 damage. This quest was much harder for me when I was a DB. --ck 23:40, 25 July 2008 (CDT)

This happens a few times for me now :(

Lasagna Bandages

This might be a total coincidence but on several occasions now, the Gremlin has given me the desired tool message straight after I used Lasagna Bandages. With only four Gremlins per ascension I can't really spade this out myself, but I thought I'd mention it just in case anyone else feels like trying it. Calr3 10:51, 5 February 2008 (CST)

Coincidence. I use lasagna bandages as a basic survival necessity against Gremlins when I'm a PM, and I've seen no correlation. --Flargen 14:45, 28 May 2008 (CDT)

Identifying gremlins

The batwinged gremlin with the hammer has the phrase "gremlinwinged bats are pretty much just amputee mice" in it's description when you first fight it. The batwinged gremlin that will not attack with the hammer has the phrase "gremlin-winged bats are pretty much just amputee mice". Note the hyphen. That's all I've got. I checked the others carefully, but didn't see any difference between the having tools and not having tools. --Wizard Stan 05:16, 28 February 2008 (CST)

The page implies that there are two different gremlins of each time, one that drops the tool and one that does not. If you popper a gremlin of the nondrop dialog, you will not see the gremlin that drops either. They are not two unique monsters.--amosmj 07:18, 7 June 2008 (CST)

Perhaps it should be added that the spider gremlin monster has a slightly modified attack. The mating attack message deals physical damage if the gremlin has the tool, and sleaze damage if it doesn't. This may just be a bug, but the discussion page on the spider gremlin's page shows someone else noticing the same thing, perhaps this page and the spider gremlin's page should be modified to reflect this difference? It'll make spotting the right gremlin a lot easier. Perhaps there are other similarities with other gremlins, as well. Anyone willing to do so more spading? War outfits and tool frequency

I'm wearing the Frat Warrior Fatigues while I'm fighting gremlins this ascension, and they've thrown all the tools at me within 4 turns. Usually, I don't wear the outfit when fighting them and it takes me much longer to acquire the tools. Anybody care to confirm or disprove this? --Telis R 08:36, 5 December 2008 (UTC)

Fixed Junkyard Adventure Again

Ever since they fixed the junkyard so that you can Adventure Again in the same area without getting sent back to the Barrel With Something Burning In It, I've noticed that the location of the tools doesn't vary.

  • Hammer - Barrel
  • Crescent Wrench - Tires
  • Pliers - Refrigerator
  • Screwdriver - Car

It's the same on both my accounts ever since the announced fix, so I assume it's the same for everyone else, yes? --Keristars 12:23, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

Don't need outfit to talk to Yossarian?

I just went to talk to Yossarian while wearing just ordinary equipment, no outfit, and I got this message: "Hey there, soldier, could you help me ou -- wait, you're not a soldier, you're just some damn civilian. Never mind. I've got a real problem here and I was hoping a fellow military man could help me out. If you see anybody in uniform, send them my way, okay?" He wanders off, muttering something about a wrench and some tires Emphasis mine. And I WAS able to find the wrench near the tires, and when I went back he was muttering about "pliers and a refrigerator". Does this mean we don't have to wear an outfit to talk to him? --Listen2Reason 21:17, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

It is not necessary to talk to Yossarian between tools at all. For my past ten ascensions or so I've visited him only at the start (to get the magnet) and at the end (turning in all four tools at once). The gremlin type that stole the tool in each location is always the same. --Yunatwilight 16:22, 11 April 2012 (CEST)

My favorite tactic is to max my HP, then use the spectre scepter while I wait for the appropriate gremlin to announce their item drop phrases, then use the magnet to yoink them away, then repeat four times in the four junkyard locations, as appropriate ... for this side-quest zone, its easy, once you get used to it -- AvangionQ / April 22nd, 2009

Discovered today that the gremlins can still drop the gremlin juice when you successfully retrieve a tool with the magnet. Never noticed it before and didn't see it mentioned anywhere, it's worth noting for HC/BM runs. --Denarius 22:12, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

The Big Book of Pirate Insults

It needs some spading - I've only tried it on one run so far - but it seems that using The Big Book of Pirate Insults will cause the gremlin to automatically use its tool-related attack if it's carrying one. Unfortunately, that must have been a lucky coincidence. I never received either the tool-related attack or the attack indicating lack of a tool immediately after insulting the appropriate gremlins in each of the four sub-areas. --Professor Why 09:50, 26 May 2010 (UTC)

  • Lots of things you can do. With lots of MP, I just cast Saucy Salve over and over. Some of those don't count as a round, but most do. With lots of meat, you can just sit around using Doc Galatik items. With lots of HP, you can use useless reusable combat items.
