How about changing the moons at rollover instead of at 12:00 AM(or whenever it changes). I frequently check the moon cycles after rollover and it's a bit of a hassle to go and look at a calender...--Kookoo275 12:45, 20 August 2006 (CDT)

• Glancing over the way the moons template is written, it looks to me that takes the date according to wiki-server time, and sets the moons based on a pattern that corresponds to the date. I'm not sure if adjusting the template to "rollover" at x hours before server-midnight is plausible. --Alpaca (^T/_C) 21:27, 20 August 2006 (CDT)
  • It is possible to set a global time delta in MediaWiki to make it think it's in a different time zone - this would allow rollover-anchored events to display properly, though it would cause signature timestamps to be off. --Quietust 21:36, 20 August 2006 (CDT)

  • I was just about to beg the web server admins to do that (change the server time), but then I realized that Coldfront is shared-hosted by Southwest Bell... so the Coldfront admins probably don't have the power to change the server OS time and/or timezone. So it really should be done in the moon script... which, by the way, right now nearly 8am Arizona time, still says it's yesterday, ugh. Are the Moons ummm you know broken? I mean I'm getting a Aug 27/06 still and it is 5:04 pm AZMountain on the 28th. The whole changing the system to incoporate the minimoon and move it from the older system seems entirely worthless to me. The moons use to be correct and not excessivly hard to glean info from with a link that went to a nice calendar page etc. It seems like in the aim of progress we have achieved the exact opposite.--Practitioner of Saucy Arts 19:06, 28 August 2006 (CDT)

Coldfront Ads

I'd appreciate if you would stop including the very aggressive "drivecleaner" popups in the site. These popups appear in a Windows OK box and are easy to accidentally hit enter on due to this camouflage. --Peterwhimsey 08:17, 16 November 2006 (CST)

• I don't think the wiki uses any pop-up ads. I haven't seen any in FF (or a blocked pop-up notification) or when I double check the appearance of things in IE, are you sure it's the wiki doing it or is something fishy happening on your end? If there were pop-ups I'm sure many of us would be complaining, because after the wiki skin change we were complaining about the animated flash ads, which have been reduced since. I'm assuming your probably using IE on windows, but anyway (if on windows) trying running the free versions of Ad-Aware and Spybot - Search & Destroy, which are both adware/spyware/malware removers and SpywareBlaster, which blocks unwanted sites in FF and IE (shatty active-x controls), etc. And have an obligatory token link to FF too ;-) And if the preceding seemed obvious to you (or didn't work), giving us the path of the pop-up/image/flash would be nice or if you could locate which advertising service it is, even better. I'll wander around in IE for a while and see what "pops up"... pun intended. And there is always Adblock, you'll see it once then never again ;-) -JRSiebz (☎|§|‡) 16:50, 17 November 2006 (CST)
• Upon further review (pressing "random page" a bunch), I still have not encountered a wiki supplied pop-up ad, though I am extremely disappointed in the wiki's ad selection. The ads don;t even seems to be well targeted at all, the RealAge ABC ads about abdominal discomfort, bloating, and constipation are really annoying. Even the PA Child's Play link is swf! There is even an aol.com ad... that is just ridiculous! There are almost always large animated flash ads on the top and right, and if not are animated gifs. I felt epileptic trying to view the wiki in IE. I didn't realize it was so bad, since I use FF all the time. In FF I have adblock set up to block every ad in the right frame so that the the main display area for the wiki's pages is wider, I tend to edit many pages and it is an eyesore/pain having everything (the page source, a preview, etc.) all in a 2 inch column in the middle which scrolls down 20 screens (exaggerated for emphasis). I use a custom adblock set, I understand sites may need to have advertising (I don't block reasonably sized static pics or text ads), but to me, that right ends when something is large, popped-up, animated, and/or flash. I wish coldfront would take a trick from KoL (even rKoL) and take donations instead of flash-adding us to death. --JRSiebz (☎|§|‡) 17:12, 17 November 2006 (CST)

• First of all, thanks for not dismissing this and looking into it seriously. More detail, I normally use FF for this site. I decided to use IE to check what you asked and got the following: "The website "www.driveclaener.com" has requested to save a file on your computer called a "cookie". This file may be used to track usage information. Do you want to allow this?" Note the insidious use of "claener" instead of the more easily trackable "cleaner". I also stress that I never see this stuff on any other site. Could it be the side bar provider? I get ads there that are in Dutch, so this is targeted at me (being from the Netherlands). I tries to install this: installdrivecleanerstart_nl.cab from "Drivecleaner Inc". On FF I got the following cookie requests and also 4 different installation requests (i.e., not popups). Cookies: www.drivecleaner.com, www.driveclaener.com, go.drivecleaner.com and stats.drivecleaner.com. --Peterwhimsey 04:35, 20 November 2006 (CST)
  • Here is the wikipedia article on WinFixer / WinAntiVirus / ErrorSafe / SystemDoctor / DriveCleaner (all same program). I haven't been able to have what you describe happen to me, but it is possible one of the (Dutch?) advertisers which gets selected is a douche ;-), has garbage embedded in it's ads. I think coldfront can opt out of certain ads, if we/you can limit it down to a specific ad(vertiser)... but coldfront admins don't wander around the wiki much. But I *think* (maybe) it is more likely you have caught it from somewhere else and it is manifesting here. Does this happen on just the wiki or other sites too? (I don't think I asked that yet).   • Thanks for the link - it's a bit more helpful than what I googled so far. As it is I'm not infected though. I'm just being harassed constantly when I use the KOLwiki - as you'll see in your link to Diskcleaner Wiki it offers to install itself and does this constantly. It drives me nuts :S. I know I should probably get some sort of malware blocker plugin (haven't found a satisfactory one yet), but I want you guys to be aware of the fact that this is going on at the KOLwiki.--Peterwhimsey 10:46, 20 November 2006 (CST)
  • Definitely a top bar advertisement from Drivecleaner. They have a few different versions they cycle through. Every different ad prompts an installation OK/Cancel box. The only way NOT to get infected by this disgrace is to be very careful with the enter key and use ALt F4 every time. Over and out from me. I'll protect myself, but I sure hope you guys decide to not support these people by offering their ads on KOLWiki.--Peterwhimsey 02:28, 21 November 2006 (CST)

• If I might step in for a moment....Coldfront (and therefore the Wiki) uses NO popup ads. If you are seeing any, it is a problem with spyware on your end, not ours. Could we PLEASE kill the "Nintendo Wii" ads that talk? Eyedrops

Today's article on eyedrops lists four eyedrops in the Kingdom (Knob Goblin, Ermine, Ocelot, Newt and Soft Green Echo) but that's actually five, and also misses the sixth and seventh: Cyclops Eyedrops and Black Eyedrops.

I'd suggest moving Black Eyedrops to position 1, then put Cyclops Eyedrops to spot 2, with the explanation that Knob Goblin Eyedrops, Ermine and Ocelot are all attempts to replicate the second formula with varying degrees of success. Then add that Newt Eyedrops were also created by saucerors, but with a far different effect. And then finish off with the Soft Green Echo as it stands. --JoseCuervo

New Adventure?

While Adventuring in Whitleys Grove, I came across this adventure 'The thrumming vibration increases in intensity until it's a full-on shaking. Then it increases some more, putting it firmly in "quake" territory. Aftershocks ensue.

A crack forms in the ground beneath your feet, and a wave of hot air hits you. It's not just heat, though, it's something... else. Something that makes the little hairs on your arm stand up.

This cannot possibly bode well.'

Problem with the News

For me, the links provided in the news (About the "rock" based encounters) all fail to work. It would appear that the links all link to www.thekolwiki.net instead of kol.coldfront.net/thekolwiki/. Although the former appears to exist, the webpage doesn't load for me. Any idea why? --Rorybob 09:01, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

Date/Time

Suggestion for all the date calculations on the site: syncronize them to eastern time midnight for now (which is roughly rollover). Just modify all the {{#time}} calls with the appropriate number of hours back from server time ({{#time|-4 hours}}). Then the main page date and events will be less out of sync with actual game date. (To clarify a bit more, using the time function in place of the current day magic word and then reworking things a tad from there) --Lordebon 02:43, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

Yep: The wiki uses UTC as its base time, and since Arizona/KoL doesn't observe daylight savings time no change will be necessary. Your local time will appear to change, but the wikitime won't. --Lordebon 20:43, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

beginner's guide

Hey mods...

I just make a Beginner's guide. Is there a way some of you could go look at it, then put a link to the Quick Link's section? I think it would be really helpful. I just started playing about 10 days ago, and I had to hunt pretty hard to find out basic stuff. So, I compiled a list of info, hints, and other basic stuff with as many useful links as I could include. With my newbie status, I hoped I could present info that advanced players would take for granted.

New IotM Message

What is the default amount of time that the new IotM message stays on the main page? It's now the 6th day and the message is still there. Is it necessary for the message to be there for that long? icefall5 04:23, 9 May 2010 (UTC)

• Going by the coding at Template:Announcement, it looks like the first 7 days of the month. Sounds reasonable to me. --Flargen 04:32, 9 May 2010 (UTC)

Shouldn't someone fix the message so that it waits until there's an actual new IotM to display? It's displaying the CSB as I type this, when we don't get a new item until tonight. --HikaruYami 18:17, 2 August 2012 (CEST)

• Well, we can't do that automatically if that's what you mean. We (by which I mean Quietust most of the time) do change the announcement manually to point out the IotM is delayed. Just didn't think to do it this time. --Flargen
  • Who's "we"? If the IotM is getting updated on the main page automatically at all (it must be, or the mistake wouldn't have been made), then there must be a bot that a) checks the date for a new month, and b) checks Mr. Store. If an admin just has access to that bot, just like you store the previous month to find out whether it's a new month, you can trivially store data about the previous IotM, and throw a "delay" message to the home page if it's the same, and under those conditions keep checking once after every rollover for a new IotM. It's actually *really* trivial, and I could do it myself if I had access to the bot's code (but since I've never written or read a kol bot myself, it would take a lot longer to do it dry because I don't even have the "reads the item from mr. store" code, not to mention needing a way to propagate a message onto the main page of this wiki with the same/a connected bot).

• • • Template:Announcement looks at the day of the month. If it's 1-8, it includes Template:ANNOUNCE IotM. Template:ANNOUNCE IotM gets updated by whoever gets around to it. Featured Article Updates

How frequently is the Main Page rebuilt if parts of it, such as the templates that drive Featured Articles, are updated? I ask because I just edited the Brimstone template for that featured article (to fix a link issue), but the Main Page doesn't reflect the change yet. --Wrldwzrd89 16:04, 23 May 2010 (UTC)

I don't know, but you can always force a rebuild by purging it (going to edit the page, then change in the url "action=edit" to "action=purge"). --TimRem 18:41, 23 May 2010 (UTC)

Update

So, I just noticed that the Main Page is currently written using HTML table syntax instead of wikitables. I've gone and converted it at User:Timrem/test to use wikitables instead, and I can see no difference in the final product. If others would care to check that nothing's broken in other browsers, I don't see why we should keep the Main Page in its current state as opposed to the version using wikitables. Holiday displayed when there is none

Right now the main page claims that today is El Dia de los Muertos Borrachos: Screenshot
This is not true, and neither was this holiday yesterday, nor will it take place tomorrow. What gives?

The announcement template hasn't been updated for 2011 holidays -- it was still using those for 2010 and Jan 4, 2010 was El Dia. I've removed that particular one for now but the rest of the template needs updating. Ideally it could be revamped to keep track of the KoL date in addition to real date, rather than relying on manual assignment of real days to KoL days. It's that manual translating year-by-year that caused that erroneous holiday. --Lordebon 18:04, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

Broken Links

A bit outside the KoL scope, but the "About Coldfront", "Privacy Policy", and "Advertising" links at the very bottom of the main page are all broken. --Fig bucket 02:59, 12 August 2011 (CEST)

Sound Effects

• I don't see a reason to change it, actually. It actually adds bytes to the page, requires a template call instead of simply rendering text, and doesn't actually improve anything that I can see. {{SoundEffect}} makes sense on pages which are regularly edited since it cleans up the code a bit, but the main page is rarely touched. The news from Coldfront is goofed up

Something's goofy with the ColdFrontNews tag the Wiki supports. The problem with it, which has been an issue for a while, is that after the first link to the KoL Wiki, there should be a space between the end of the link and the next word - oddly, this only affects the FIRST link. Broken images

I've noticed the last couple of days that it seems like none of the in-game images are showing up on the wiki, they're only showing up as the image name placeholder. I tried to right-click and view image on one, and it says it can't find the server at cdn.coldfront.net. I've tested it on multiple computers, and got the same error. The Official KoL Fansite

Greasemonkey is no longer a thing for KOL

Greasemonkey doesn't work for KOL. As such, I'd suggest that the Greasemonkey Scripts link be removed from the "So You'd Like To:" section. This seems to be confusing to many new users who mistakenly think that Greasemonkey still works for KOL and wind up asking questions about it in chat, only to learn it's a defunct thing. --Rick Tyger (talk) 16:39, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
