Such Great Depths
You find a part of the temple where the floor has collapsed into a network of caves beneath. Thinking that now is as good a time as any to get some networking done, you carefully climb down the pile of collapsed floor bits and begin to explore.
You reach a three-way junction. One path is lit by an eerie glow, one is ringed by a series of carved (or perhaps very oddly eroded) glowering faces, and from the depths of the third you can hear an ominous growling.
Which way inspires you to further investigation?
The glowing |
You head down the passageway and emerge into the most video game of caverns -- the cavern whose walls glow with bioluminescent fungus.
You marvel for a while at the beauty and wonder of the cliché, then break off a piece of the fungus and leave.
You acquire an item: glowing fungus |
The glowering |
Once per day:
You head down the face-ringed passage, encountering more and more faces along the way, until you're absolutely certain that these faces were carved by the people who originally built the temple, rather than forming spontaneously.
You eventually reach a massive chamber dominated by an underground lake surrounded by dozens of fountains in the shape of massive carved heads, with water pouring down their tongues into the lake. Upon closer inspection, however, you realize that the water is flowing not down the tongues, but up them!
"This lake must be the source of the magic that powers all of those traps and things in the temple above!" you say aloud to yourself. "And if the water is magic enough to flow up those statues' tongues, it must be magic enough to flow up yours! I mean up mine!"
You test the theory by dipping your tongue in the lake. A burst of water surges upwards into your mouth, and down your throat, filling you with power. And water. Which reminds you -- you need to pay your power and water bills -- you should get out of this cave and go do that.
You acquire an effect: Hidden Power (duration: 5 Adventures) |
Subsequent visits:
You don't want to upset the balance of things by taking more than your share of the magical water. You decide to wait until tomorrow before drinking any more of it.
