Lore of the Roses
While poking around the Haunted Conservatory, you discover a rosebush -- black roses, naturally -- that looks like someone has been pruning it recently. Several of the flowers have been cut off, and are lying in a pile nearby.
On closer inspection, it seems like the gardener has been trimming off the roses that don't have as many thorns as the others? That tracks, I guess.
One of the roses has a particularly unusual configuration -- totally smooth all the way down the stem, except for a cluster of thorns at the cut-off end.
