Hello, Adventurer. I'm Renatus Bigg, but you can call me Rene. All my friends do, and you look like a friend to me.

• When appeared:

Have you seen my dig? It's the biggest dig in archaeological history! It's so big that I couldn't possibly unearth everything myself, even if I had all the grad students in the world providing free labor!

• Dug up no artifacts:

Say, you look like you could wield a shovel and a brush. Mind helping me out? You can keep whatever you dig up -- I don't go in for any of that "this belongs in a museum" nonsense. The important thing to me is that all of this stuff gets out from under that dirt.

• Dug up X artifacts:

Thanks for your help, Adventurer! It says here that you've dug up X artifacts. Keep up the good work!

• After the first dig was completed:

Boy, you Adventurers are an industrious lot! You completely excavated the first layer of the dig in record time.

Unfortunately, that means you've caught me with my pants down. I'm gonna need a little while to get the next phase of the operation ready.

• During the second and third dig, first visit:

This layer of the dig requires more delicate work, so you'll need to use this special shovel. Unfortunately, I can only give you one a day, because the ship that brought them somehow managed to lose most of them en route.

I'm sorry, but I don't have enough shovels to give you another one. I ordered plenty, but so many were lost at sea that we have to ration them carefully so we don't run out.
