Tyrannosaurus Tex You're fighting a Tyrannosaurus Tex

One of the most fearsome predators from days of Yore, the Tyrannosaurus Tex is a mighty, flesh-eating dinosaur with two useless arms, a mouth full of razor-sharp teeth, and a ten-gallon hat on his head. Although, in this case, it's more like a fifty-gallon hat. Looks like you best rustle up some defense, pardner.

Hit Message(s):

It grabs you around the waist and shakes you like a sleazy lawyer. Life...uh... finds a way. In this case, a way to end yours. Ooh! Ow! Ouch! Eek! Oof! Eek! Ouch! Ouch! Argh! Ooh!

It roars a terrifying roar and stomps all over you. Any glasses of water in the vicinity would definitely be trembling. Ugh! Ouch! Oof! Ugh! Eek! Ouch! Ow! Ouch! Ugh! Argh!

It roars a terrifying roar and scrapes you with its short, useless arms. The claws at the end of which are neither short nor useless. Discuss. Ow! Eek! Ouch! Eek! Eek! Argh! Argh! Oof! Ugh! Ooh!

Miss Message(s):

It tries to you[sic] in the <ankle>, but misses.

Butterfly.gif
The chaos butterfly flaps its wings. A giant meteorite, its trajectory subtly altered by a storm halfway around the kingdom, crashes into the dinosaur and ushers it into The Extinction Club.
You gain 40 <substat>.

Occurred at The Sorceress' Tower (The Stairs).

Notes

  • This monster's combat weakness is the chaos butterfly.
  • If you lose, you will receive a hint as to which item to use.
    • First hint: That beast is pretty vicious -- you're not gonna be able to defeat it head-on.
    • Second hint: Fortunately, it's a dinosaur, and they're due to become extinct anyway. Maybe you can accelerate the process somehow.
    • Third hint: What you need is some way to drastically alter the climate.
    • Fourth hint: What you need is something with about as much power as it would take to create a hurricane in Brazil.
    • Fifth hint: A chaos butterfly from the Castle in the Clouds in the Sky is basically what you're looking for here.

References

  • The chaos butterfly's description references mathematician Dr. Ian Malcolm's explanation of chaos theory in Michael Crichton's 1991 novel Jurassic Park. From this it is possible to infer that it works against a dinosaur.
  • The lawyer combat message is a reference to Steven Spielberg's 1993 movie of the novel, in which the lawyer Donald Genarro is eaten by a Tyrannosaurus rex. The 'Life... uh... finds a way' message is a line from the movie.
  • The stomp attack message is a reference to a famous and much imitated scene in Jurassic Park where the approach of the Tyrannosaurus Rex is shown by ripples in a glass of water.
  • One of the attack texts is a reference to the "Coffee Talk" sketch from Saturday Night Live, where host Linda Richman (played by Mike Myers) would give guests topics along the lines of "Sweet potatoes are neither sweet nor potatoes. Discuss."
  • Using a chaos butterfly to defeat Tyrannosaurus Tex is a direct reference to A Sound of Thunder (1952) by Ray Bradbury, in which a time traveling hunter from the future accidentally steps on a butterfly while hunting a Tyrannosaurus rex and changes the future.
  • Bradbury's literary use of a butterfly to describe chaos theory predates by 10 years Edward Lorenz's Butterfly Effect.
  • The name "Tyrannosaurus Tex" is borrowed from the unreleased Game Boy Color game Tyrannosaurus Tex, which was about a cowboy who fought dinosaurs.
  • The Extinction Club is a work of nonfiction, which includes a section about hunters in Texas paying to kill a deer that, at one time, was found only in the Forbidden City in China.
