The Island Barracks
First time:
Under cover of darkness, you sneak around to the back of the bandits' fort, and quickly spot the place the old man told you about -- it looks like a small landslide rolled down off of the volcano and smashed up the outer wall a bit. Not enough to make a hole, but the pockmarks and cracks provide perfect handholds for climbing. You quickly scale the wall and drop quietly into the compound on the other side. Keeping a sharp eye out for guards, you sneak up to the back door of the building and push it open a crack. You don't see anyone inside, so you enter cautiously.
Later visits:
You sneak back into the mariachi barracks, as quiet as one of those little jumping desert rodents. Except without the huge feet.
After defeating Somerset Lopez, Demon Mariachi:
You sneak back into the bandits' barracks, then realize there really isn't much point to sneaking since all the bandits have fled. You decide to take the opportunity to look around for any interesting loot you may have missed the first time. You also decide to pretend that you're looking for the keys to Lopez's hacienda again, so that I don't have to rewrite every single paragraph of text in here.
Occurs in The Barracks.

Notes
- During the Nemesis quest, each of the 18 explorable locations here can contain one of five possible results. There may be a hacienda key, a clue to the location of a key, a fight with a mariachi, a location-specific item reward, or nothing. The locations of each are randomized for each player/ascension. The following chart displays which area each clue corresponds to:
- Four of the keys can be obtained through exploring, but one key must be acquired by pickpocketing mariachis.
- If the locations were numbered 1-kitchen, 2-dining room, 3-storeroom, 4-bedroom, 5-library, 6-parlour, the clues will lead to the two lowest numbered locations that have keys. (Thus, if the keys were in locations 1, 3, 4, and 5, the clues would refer to 1 and 3). This is why there are no clues for the library and parlour.
- Accordingly, a good strategy to limit the number of turns required is to explore the locations in descending order (parlour, library, bedroom, etc.)
- Each location-specific item can only be obtained once per ascension.
- Exactly one location in each room holds a mariachi, and exactly one starts out holding a key or clue to a key. Empty locations occur where a key or item that was originally there has been removed by the player already.
- After the quest is over, you may continue exploring the Barracks, but the locations that previously led to mariachi combats will lead to an item instead. Locations that previously led to a key or a clue to a key remain empty or clueful, respectively; thus it is not possible to get all the barracks' items in a single run.
