The Cabin in the Dreadsylvanian Woods
The Cabin in the Dreadsylvanian Woods

You find yourself in a spooky cabin. The sound of the wind outside is muted but relentless. Somewhere a clock ticks, almost but not quite rhythmically. The hairs on the back of your neck stand up and you begin to hear the pounding of your own heartbeat, almost but not quite matching the weird syncopation of the clock.

The only thing preventing you from bolting out the door into the forest is that you were just in that forest, and it's not really any less scary than this cabin.

A door leads into what can only be the kitchen, if you operate under the assumption that only kitchens have stoves and refrigerators in them. A trap door in the floor leads to the basement, in case you want the situation to get even more terrifying. A string dangling from the ceiling draws your attention to another trap door, this one leading to the cabin's attic.

Huh. Cabins don't normally have attics. This must have been a pretty nice cabin before it got all haunty and stuff.

Check out the kitchen
You open the creaky door and walk slowly into the kitchen.

If you've already screwed around in the cabin this instance:

The kitchen door slams shut as you approach it -- looks like the cabin remembers you, and doesn't want you poking around anymore.

Go down to the basement
You grab a lit candle off of a nearby table (man, somebody oughtta teach these cabin dwellers a lesson about fire safety!) and creep slowly down the stairs.

If you've already screwed around in the cabin this instance:

The trap door to the basement slams shut as you approach it.

Try the attic

With a Dreadsylvanian skeleton key:

You use your skeleton key to unlock the padlock on the attic trap door. Then you use your legs to climb the ladder into the attic. Then you use your stupidity to lose the skeleton key. Crap.

If the attic hasn't been unlocked yet:

You tug the string, but the trap door doesn't budge. You look up and see why -- a sturdy padlock is attached to the trap door. Looks like you're gonna need one of those keys from the Inn if you want to go up there.

If you've already screwed around in the cabin this instance:

The string dances out of your reach. The cabin settles ominously. You should probably just leave.

Use a ghost pencil
You stick the ghost pencil into your head and annotate your mental map of the area. You'll be able to find your way back here really easily now.

You've seen how this one ends -- no way you're hanging out in this cabin long enough for anything interesting to happen.

Occurs at Dreadsylvanian Woods.

  • Failing to open the trap door does not end the adventure.

  • The title and some details of the cabin, such as the basement that makes things worse, are references to the Cabin in the Woods horror-satire film.
