TheKolWiki talk:Copyrights

Lots of these pages need fixing up. This one needs a link fix. The "You've followed a link to a page that doesn't exist yet. To create the page, start typing in the box below (see the help page for more info)." page links to a redirect. The "Community portal" link on the left is to a redirect, etc. Nobody pays attention to these pages anyways, but just pointing things out.--Dehstil (t|c) 22:36, 1 July 2006 (CDT)

  • Also, the "View source" page still says "Return to Main Page" regardless of the actual page you're viewing.--Dehstil (t|c) 22:47, 1 July 2006 (CDT)

Am I correct in concluding that if I want to redistribute some content of this Wiki I would need separate permission of the individual contributors? I am interested in creating some Open Source scripts for use with KoL, but they would be rather useless to others if I can't include the required data files, if I were to compose them from information found here.

This is what I could find in this Wiki:

  • TheKolWiki:Copyrights: game graphics and text are licensed for use in this wiki by Asymmetric publications. So presumably no reuse. Ok for me; I don't need those.
  • MediaWiki:Copyrightwarning: your writing may be edited. Text you submit must be from the public domain or a "similar free resource" (whatever that last part means). Still, contributors aren't giving permission for reuse.
  • At the bottom of each page it says "© 2005 - 2006 Coldfront L.L.C.", but contributors aren't asked to give up their copyright (and in fact, if I'm not mistaken, in some countries you can't give up copyright, only license it (exclusively if needed)).

Afaik, and IANAL, in my country (The Netherlands) there can be no copyrights on plain facts per se (like a telephone number), so using some data may still be legally ok for me, but it may be different for data acquired through spading.

Regardless, I think the article page could do with some clarifying remarks.

    1. I can't pretend to speak for the site management or to the legalities of the issue, but I doubt it's that big of a deal. It'd be near impossible to contact all contributors, and I daresay much of our content is either directly copied (actual game content) or draws from other sites (spading/official forums). Again, I can't speak to the legality of things, but I think Wiki projects generally use GNU Free Documentation License, which means you can copy as you like.
    2. Depending on what data you may be talking about, some other projects may have already got it parsed in a better format than what's on here. KoLmafia, for example, has related data parsed into one single file rather than everything (generally) being on a separate page here. --Bagatelle 18:39, 25 February 2008 (CST)
