Template talk:Featuredarticle

Okay, this is just to let everyone know that I am not going to be able to update this template for about a month starting around June 25th. Does anyone else want to take up the job of maintaing the featured articles?--SomeStranger (t|c) 21:08, 19 June 2006 (CDT)

  • If you like, we could just automate it on an extended lineup now. You're no longer limited to just the current week.--Dehstil (t|c) 15:32, 20 June 2006 (CDT)
  • We have a ton of featured articles now. Perhaps we should make the rotation monthly or somesuch, since we could easily fill it all up, and it would spare us the inconvenience of updating the rotation repeatedly. (Or as repeatedly.) Perhaps even a semi-monthly rotation would be possible. --Alpaca (T/C) 11:52, 27 August 2006 (CDT)

Thanks very much SomeStranger for adding my article to the rotation. I am confused though - can someone please explain to me the syntax of this page and add a brief summary here about how it works? It looks like it will rotate in tomorrow maybe? I appreciate it, thanks. :) --DataVortex 20:17, 22 September 2006 (CDT) Aww, I was hoping the feature would rollover today... --DataVortex 23:29, 22 September 2006 (CDT)

Switching the Rotation to Monthly

I don't really want to keep these things updated anymore so let's just set it on a monthly rotation. If someone else doesn't do it in the next few hours I will....--SomeStranger (t|c) 19:13, 10 October 2006 (CDT)

Why is the first line of this template

{{#switch:{{#expr:({{CURRENTDOW}}+{{CURRENTWEEK}}*7) mod 7}}|

I havnt checked what the mod 7 is doing to the result but for a weeks worth of rotation

{{#switch:{{CURRENTDOW}}|

is all thats needed or for a months worth

{{#switch:{{CURRENTDAY}}|

  • I remember now...(it took a moment to look it up). Dehstil added that awhile back in the hopes that someone would take the initiative and add more than the current 7 to the list of articles. Instead of limiting it to having monthly articles or having daily articles, the "mod" function allows for any number of articles as long as you change the mod value. (so if you added another article it would be mod 8)--SomeStranger (t|c) 20:44, 3 January 2007 (CST)

Nice to know thanks for answering my question. Discordance 06:25, 4 January 2007 (CST)

I'm interested in updating a few of the old featured articles and adding them into the current rotation. I'm not familiar with how this code works however. So I just have to add new lines to the existing list of 7, then increase the mod value to the current total? --Prestige 19:52, 9 June 2007 (CDT)
Ok, I looked up the variables, and figured out the correct way to add featured articles to the rotation. So I'm thinking of updating and adding to the rotation: Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot, PvP, Elements, The LAAAAME Observatory ...as well as new featured articles on NS13 and The Worm Wood/Green Pixie. If I don't have the authority to do this, please let me know. Otherwise I will start soon. --Prestige 06:47, 10 June 2007 (CDT)
  • Revision as of 20:17, June 17, 2007 by Prestige: "Rotated in new articles; changed rotation back to 7 so it'll actually work; replaced outdated list of previous articles." So wait...it doesn't work unless its 7? So useless..the point was to pretty much throw all the articles into one relatively unmaintained rotation. (Ah what a nice review of wiki code...)--Dehstil (t|c) 00:16, 16 May 2008 (CDT)
  • I don't know what went wrong when I tried that last year. I thought all I had to do was add more articles and change the "mod 7" to reflect the new total number of articles, but it didn't seem to work. Dehstil, I was hoping you could shed some light on it since you apparently wrote that code. --Prestige 04:30, 16 May 2008 (CDT)
  • The actual problem appears to be that MediaWiki's CURRENTDOW and CURRENTWEEK are mutually incompatible - the former starts with Sunday, while the latter starts with Monday, so if you take CURRENTWEEK * 7 + CURRENTDOW you end up with a sequence of numbers that looks like this: "...,146,140,148,149,150,151,152,153,147,155,156,157,158,159,160,154,162,...". The reason it works with mod 7 is that, with mod 7, CURRENTWEEK is effectively negated entirely and serves no purpose whatsoever. Technically, the "broken" sequence generated by CURRENTWEEK * 7 + CURRENTDOW does work - it does touch every number in the sequence, just not in the exact order one would expect. --Quietust (t|c) 08:23, 16 May 2008 (CDT)
  • Interesting. I'm planning to change up the rotation eventually, and I guess I'll use CURRENTDAY and a 31-article rotation. --Prestige 09:21, 16 May 2008 (CDT)
  • I wanted to ask a question: would the rotation work if it was {{CURRENTWEEK}} * 7 + (({{CURRENTDOW}} + 1) mod 7 )? Would that take care of the jump in the number pattern above? --CG1:t,c,e 20:14, 7 August 2008 (CDT)
    • Almost, but not quite. You want the DOW contribution to cycle to 0 at the same time the CW increments. Since you want Monday to be assigned to 0 with DOW, and it is currently assigned a value of 1 (if Quietust is correct), it should be:
      {{CURRENTWEEK}}*7 + (({{CURRENTDOW}}-1)mod7),
which can then be taken mod-whatever. --Flargen 22:10, 7 August 2008 (CDT)
      • Wait, no, you're right. I mixed up which one was the former and which was the latter. Sigh. --Flargen 22:15, 7 August 2008 (CDT)
        • No: I think you're right, Flargen. If CW increments by 1 each Monday then CDOW must be 0 on Monday. So, subtracting one should be correct. --CG1:t,c,e 08:33, 8 August 2008 (CDT)
  • Fixed (I think). Now we can add a bunch of articles. Edit: To my horror, I thought maybe it would round up half way thru the day (or something like that). Turns out mod truncates and the ISO format doesn't allow numbers like that.--Dehstil (t|c) 13:35, 16 May 2008 (CDT)
  • The only problem with your "fix" is that it will still jump around very noticeably at the end of each month (e.g. with mod 7, May 31 to June 1 would cause it to stay on the 3rd article both days), while the week*7+day method would merely run out of order in a particular week (and seriously, does the order really matter?) and would only repeat oddly at the end of the year. --Quietust (t|c) 14:19, 16 May 2008 (CDT)
  • Yeah, it's pretty much like CURRENTDAY :(. I was trying to use the timestamp like I would the number of seconds since the Unix Epoch, but clearly it doesnt work that way. You're right the old works nicer but all funky. Darn mediawiki.--Dehstil (t|c) 14:26, 16 May 2008 (CDT)

Updating rotation

Sadly, it's been many months since the rotation was changed, and the featured article has been rotating through only 7 items this whole time. I think there are at least 30 existing FA templates that are good or could be shaped into good enough condition. Why don't we do that, and create a rotation of 30 articles for greater variety? --Prestige 23:47, 3 May 2008 (CDT)

  • Sounds good to me. I'd be willing to help with rewriting some of the articles. --Irregular 00:05, 4 May 2008 (CDT)
  • I'm thinking of including most of the items on this article (the previous rotations of he past year.) Then we'll need to get a few more into shape for a total of about 30. Irregular, I liked your fairy revision. Let's do some more and then put it together. --Prestige 20:40, 4 May 2008 (CDT)
  • I just hit Currency; check it and either keep it or revert it. --Irregular 21:30, 4 May 2008 (CDT)
  • Here are 22 of what I consider good featured articles to include in the 30 article rotation:
Template:FEATURE Advanced Saucecrafting
Template:FEATURE Clover
Template:FEATURE Crimbo
Template:FEATURE Comet
Template:FEATURE Currency
Template:FEATURE Dungeons of Doom potion
Template:FEATURE Elements
Template:FEATURE Gemstone Jewelry
Template:FEATURE The Gnomish Gnomads' Camp
Template:FEATURE Gravy Fairies
Template:FEATURE Holidays
Template:FEATURE The LAAAAME Observatory
Template:FEATURE McPhee's Grimoire of Hilarious Object Summoning
Template:FEATURE Mr. Accessory
Template:FEATURE Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot
Template:FEATURE Pirates
Template:FEATURE PvP
Template:FEATURE Resources of Loathing
Template:FEATURE Spookyraven Manor
Template:FEATURE Tattoo
Template:FEATURE Time Travel
Template:FEATURE The Worm Wood
Please suggest others. As you can see, I didn't favor the articles that I felt were too general like "pants" or "food". Also, I may create some new featured templates for newer content like the ocean content or NS13. --Prestige 23:45, 11 May 2008 (CDT)

Familiar Articles

As you can see from TheKolWiki:Pages for deletion, I've nominated all the familiar pages for deletion. I'll admit that is a bit drastic, but I think it would be more useful to have articles relating to types of familiars, rather than individual familiars. As a result, I've mocked up an article to replace Template:FEATURE Baby Gravy Fairy; it is at Template:FEATURE Gravy Fairies. Admittedly, it's an almost verbatim copy of the previous article, but you should see for yourself. --Irregular 00:13, 4 May 2008 (CDT)

  • I kind of like some of these articles. It's not as if we have thousands of featured articles waiting to be displayed anyways....--SomeStranger (t|c) 00:23, 21 May 2008 (CDT)

Featured Article Rotation Record

Well, I changed the rotation to tri-weekly, and I was thinking that we don't need the previous rotations listed on the page. After all, we can look at the History to see what articles have been used, and the page will become somewhat cluttered with a new 22 row table every six weeks. --CG1:t,c,e 18:26, 9 August 2008 (CDT)

The last time the rotation was updated was November of last year, which is perhaps not surprising. I've first of all updated the rotation by selecting articles that were in neither of the two lists previously on the page. I also changed how we can keep track of when articles last appeared...by keeping a list of the featured articles and listing the last time they were in the rotation, we should be able to update it more easily.

Finally, we definitely need more featured articles. When I was selecting the 21 to rotate between, I stayed away from the familiar articles, but it was tough. I'll try to write a few and add them to the rotation.--Foggy 02:39, 12 October 2009 (UTC)

The Great Feature Rotation of 2014

So I'm unhijacking the featured article box, and since we've had the same features for several years, I'm planning a few new ones. You can see them listed as "future" on the list here; I'm going to try to write them at some point, real soon now. Current + future = 20, so we're one short, #21 will probably be either Advertisements or Donations or Yearly Familiars or KolCon or Eleven or something. Planned rotation:

  • 0=Fury *
  • 1=Clan VIP Lounge
  • 2=Basic farming *
  • 3=Clovers
  • 4=Disco Momentum *
  • 5=Turtle Taming *
  • 6=Avatar of Boris
  • 7=Hobopolis
  • 8=Elements
  • 9=MYSTERY ARTICLE *
  • 10=Soulsauce *
  • 11=Avatar of Jarlsberg *
  • 12=Slime Tube
  • 13=PvP
  • 14=Chefstaves
  • 15=Pasta Guardians *
  • 16=Avatar of Sneaky Pete *
  • 17=Dreadsylvania *
  • 18=Semi-Rares
  • 19=Mr. A
  • 20=Accordions *

Thank you for your support. --Johnny Treehugger (talk) 16:08, 28 August 2014 (UTC)
