The search for the trigger

Here's some stuff I already tried to trigger hardmode on this:
mark of the zombie tattoo
ZS path tattoo (both softcore and hardcore)
necrotizing body spray
sorority brain
dance card (every turn after using it, including the final turn)
hovering skull familiar
reagnimated gnome familiar
BRAINS shorts
grateful undead t-shirt
knob goblin learning pill (big veiny brain)
neurostim pill (stimulated brain)
seal-brain elixir (sealed brain)
pointy red hat
landscaper's leafblower
spaghetti cult mask
Every kind of dwelling and furnishing listed on http://kol.coldfront.net/thekolwiki/index.php/Dwelling (except the hobo fortress and gingerbread house)
--Farflier (talk) 22:03, 31 July 2013 (UTC)
Confirmed not to be having the cuckoo clock in the dwelling either
--Quertle (talk) 15:14, 2 August 2013 (UTC)

Well, everything else so far has been something that requires several different noncombats in the new zone. Has anyone tried going in with coll iron outfit equipped?--Galapagos James (talk) 13:00, 4 August 2013 (UTC)

I believe it is related to the gallows. Has anyone tried having the hood, finger, and bird equipped? --Dunsel (talk) 03:41, 5 August 2013 (UTC)

If the ZHA follows the pattern, you need the songbird as your current familiar, possibly with the tailfeathers.

Try resting with a cuckoo clock in your dwelling while you have the songbird out and are wearing the full Dreadful Pajamas set. Whack (talk) 07:22, 6 August 2013 (UTC)

  • I tried this, no dice.--Cannonfire40 (talk) 08:06, 6 August 2013 (UTC)
    • Try it repeatedly! : ) Might require a special dream. Whack (talk) 08:32, 6 August 2013 (UTC)
  • Has anyone thrown a clusterbomb at the base level ZHA? I know that the other hard mode bosses start off in hard mode, but this one might be different and there should be some use to the clusterbombs other than for killing the Ghost Mayor. --Bale (talk) 05:27, 7 August 2013 (UTC)
  • Has anyone fought the ZHA with the castle still locked? (i.e. only 1k booze for The Carriageman.) --Foobar (talk) 00:59, 8 August 2013 (UTC)

two ideas

  • jick hates his local homeowners' association. this should be something snarky about weeds.
  • is it possible to fight just (or no) zombies? that is, can banishment be the first thing you do in an instance, and can you do it enough to get just one kind of mob? --Evilkolbot (talk) 12:13, 8 August 2013 (UTC)
  • ideas
  • have the Nature's Bounty from the forest when entering the fight
  • use a Dreadsylvanian seed pod during the fight
  • enter fight with Spore-Wreathed
  • enter fight with Spore-Wreathed and Nature's Bounty
  • cold irons outfit
  • Staff of the Roaring Hearth (basis for this is "Weeds." she continues. "No more than... Niiiiiine inches. 90 contiguous squaaaaare feet. Fiiiiiiire hazard.")--Ganomex (talk) 06:04, 9 August 2013 (UTC)

While making the Dreadsylvania Non-combat Table, I noticed that three places have only two choices, which makes it seem like only-if-you-have-the-item choices are not yet known.

And the Ballroom stands out among those because it is initially locked. Is a banishment and a stat gain adventure really all you get for that key? A thorough spading would require people from each of the six classes to visit each of those while most or all of the Dreadsylvanian items in inventory. --Club (#66669) (Talk) 20:23, 9 August 2013 (UTC)

Friar's Garden

  • Has anyone tried different plant combos from the Florist Friar's cottage in this zone? Maybe its planting something that wasn't approved by the ZHA?--Grimdel (talk) 18:58, 9 August 2013 (UTC)
    • Jick has confirmed that everything you need is in Dreadsylvania. ~ Algernon Mabus (talk) 20:14, 9 August 2013 (UTC)

Similarities in other unlocks

All the other unlocks have the following in common. The unlock is removed when the boss is beaten. Several step process to obtain. You can trade the pieces but not the final product. Everything needed comes from dread. So most likely we have seen the pieces but we don't know what to do with them. And we have not seen the unlock itself (unless someone knows of a untradable item that for some reason they haven't tried.) As for as intermediate items Cool irons and songbird seem likely but we know that those can't be the unlocks because you can trade for them and there is no good way to make them disappear. Personally I feel like it may have something to do with the gallows since the gawking option has not been spaded and there is so much else going on in that NC tree that people may miss something else. --FriedPenguin (talk) 01:51, 12 August 2013 (UTC)

Additionally the item for each boss has certain restictions:

  • great wolf of the air - any class can craft necklace
  • mayor ghost - any class can unlock the Auditor's badge.
  • drunkula - any class can make the shawl
  • falls-from-sky - requires a moxie class to make the kiwitini
  • unkillable skeleton - requires a myst class to make the pie
  • ZHA - for symmetry this should require a muscle class to gain the item....

Just my thoughts, Yvain (talk) 10:25, 12 August 2013 (UTC)

Has anyone visited the malus with at least 5 of each cluster type in inventory?--Hastifer (talk) 14:58, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
The malus shows you a count of items you have, even if you don't have enough to do anything (eg "You have 1 floaty sand.") I tested with two or three on hand and the clusters do not show up at the malus like that. --Club (#66669) (Talk) 16:35, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
Ah, true. Epic too?--Hastifer (talk) 17:24, 13 August 2013 (UTC)
Just tried the epic cluster, no mention at the Malus of Forethought. --Club (#66669) (Talk) 18:22, 13 August 2013 (UTC)

Actually killing it

Against a 5-kiss HM ZHA, after having thrown a shard of double-ice, a hot clusterbomb and a spooky clusterbomb each did precisely 1101600 damage. With a V for Vivala mask on, they did precisely 1652400. --Greycat (talk) 14:51, 14 August 2013 (UTC)

  • I would venture to guess a soft damage cap based on kisses.--Fluxxdog (talk) 16:05, 21 August 2013 (UTC)

Observe the pattern here:

  • Stats at 1 kiss: 700 attack, 700 defense, 5 million HP, 75x Splattersmash multiplier, +200% initiative.
  • Stats at 5 kisses: 1500 attack, 1500 defense, 25 million HP, 45x Splattersmash multiplier, +200% initiative.
  • Stats at 6 kisses: 1700 attack, 1700 defense, 30 million HP, 38x Splattersmash multiplier.

Notice that 45 is 75*0.6, and 38 is 75*0.5 (rounded up). Now I'm wondering whether the multiplier is actually changing, or whether there's simply an increasing level of damage resistance. If the group size is 300, then Splattersmash gives a multiplier of 75. At 1 kiss there's 0% damage resistance. At 5 kisses, 40%. At 6 kisses, 50%. We just need some more data to verify it. --Greycat (talk) 01:04, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

Against a 1-kiss HM ZHA, after having thrown a shard of double-ice, a hot clusterbomb and a spooky clusterbomb each did precisely 2500003 damage. My buffed mainstat was 10222. Njord (talk) 19:51, 29 September 2013 (UTC)

Aginsts 1-kiss HM ZHA, after having thrown a shard of double-ice, then 2 spooky clusterbombs, then a shard of double-ice then 3 spooky clusterbombs then each clustbomb each did precisely 2,500,004 damage. Buffed mainstat (muscle) was over 30k so it appears there is a pretty sharp cap there. Each shard of double-ice did exactly 8 damage less than my main-stat. Yvain (talk) 05:04, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

88k buffed muscle against a 1-kiss ZHOA did 2,500,004 damage all 3 times. 101925 muscle against 2-kiss = 2,500,004. 101925 muscle against 6-kiss = 2,500,004 --LotsOfPhil

136k buffed muscle against 6-kiss, damage capped at 2,500,004. (This came from a friend and not me) --Andrew3 (talk) 20:38, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

Tiny bowler?

Wanted to confirm that an attack familiar with a tiny bowler is okay to use against this beastie before I edited. --Leaper (talk) 00:44, 11 December 2013 (UTC)

  • Pretty sure the tiny bowler is still off-limits damage. --Club (#66669) (Talk) 04:43, 11 December 2013 (UTC)
  • tiny bowler does do group damage so it is worthwhile spading to test it. I think there is a good chance it will be okay. --Bale (talk) 06:53, 11 December 2013 (UTC)
