I'm guessing that it works like the odor extractor...but it's reusable.

Of course, I don't actually know--Noneofyourdarnbusiness 12:55, 4 July 2007 (CDT)

Since it mentions getting a whiff and being able to smell the same stuff, I'm guessing it works in tandem with the odor extractor. Maybe once you've extracted it, you "remember" it, and can still track it after the effect runs out, or can track similar monsters? Just an idea. --Jimfromtx 18:26, 10 July 2007 (CDT)

I agree with the odor extractor theory. Highest mp cost out of any skill ingame other than a high level mm...would fit the current difficulty of queue manipulating in NS13.--Zeider 11:43, 21 July 2007 (CDT)

I think that it will be Hardcore Permanent when you get it, otherwise you would have to spend 200 days (and 8000 adventures on average) to get this. --CG1:t,c,e 12:39, 21 July 2007 (CDT)

  • Jick confirmed on the radio a while back that it will be HP'd when you acquire it. --Ricket 16:32, 21 July 2007 (CDT)

Imo, it will just summon odor extractors per day. -MarcyRoni 23:03, 9 August 2007 (CDT)

  • It's a combat skill. So that'd be a little odd. --Ricket 23:33, 9 August 2007 (CDT)
    • I missed that, oops. Point. If it's infinitely usable per day, it might be game breaking was my logical leap there. -MarcyRoni 21:53, 22 August 2007 (CDT)
    • I don't think it'd be gamebreaking, really, since it has a very high MP cost (for possibly a short effect), will only work on one monster at a time, and (possibly) can't be shrugged off without eyedrops. --Deusnoctum 02:39, 29 August 2007 (CDT)
      • A few turns here, and a few turns there add up to a bunch of turns at the end of a run. The MP cost will hardly be an issue for most players. --Ricket 05:07, 29 August 2007 (CDT)
      • Maybe there will be a limit on casts per day (three seems to be the favorite number here) on top of the inability to shrug it off.--Erishiku 22:14, 7 September 2007 (CDT)

Heres a thing, Despite this bieng a hardcore permament skill, it does not show up in the skill list in after-afterlife Al's ascension menu though I still had it after ascension. what gives, is it a bug?--Tombot 21:12, 17 April 2010 (UTC)

It's automatically marked as Hardcore Permanent when you acquire it; there's no reason for it to show up in the ascension menu since there's no sense in choosing it: you already know it forever after (unless born under a bad moon, of course). --TimRem 05:35, 18 April 2010 (UTC)
Yes well, heres the trick: the game gives you a list of all the skills you had before you ascended including permanent skills. On this list was the skill (vent rage gland) that was marked as hardcore permanent, but like I said, trancendant olfaction was not on this list. I'll check again next time I ascend.--Tombot 17:49, 18 April 2010 (UTC)

During a recent fight with Boss Bat, Transcendent Olfaction came up on my skill menu even thought I only had 19MP, and I was still able to use it in the fight (getting the "The smell of this opponent is too complex for even your superhuman nose to process." message) despite not being able to afford it. I haven't been able to make it happen again. --Fyll (talk) 08:53, 17 July 2013 (UTC)

non working monsters

on the stuffing golem The smell of this opponent is too complex for even your superhuman nose to process. Fly boy42 17:29, 20 January 2008 (CST)

I recently sniffed the monster from "Some Bad ASCII Art" which is listed as a semi-rare. It did not repeat for the duration of the 'spell'. It would be interesting if this had any effect (but not enough) towards this adventure repeating... that may only be possible to determine if Jick is asked. Additionally, or conversely, does this skill reduce the chances of semi-rare adventures...

Also, if it hasn't been established, the skill is automatically hardcore permed.

Bad Moon?

Is this skill usable in Bad Moon? I just started my first BM run and recently acquired this skill, and it's listed under my existing skills (not under my list of permanent skills I can't use right now). Of course, I'll have no way of knowing if I can actually use it until my maximum MP is up over 40. I mean, I'm going to assume I won't be able to, because that just goes against what BM is all about, but it's weird that it's showing up there.--Jett 09:57, 28 April 2008 (CDT)

  • This happened to me as well, but even with >40 MP the skill is not showing up in combat. Unfortunately. --DarkerLine 04:15, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Island War

Is it just bad luck on my part, or is this skill ineffective on The Battlefield? I sniffed a homeopath, wanting more poultices, and I'm not seeing increased fights with that monster. --Club (#66669) (Talk) 00:56, 25 March 2011 (UTC)

  • Several factors come into play here. One, there are an assload of monsters on the battlefield. It's worse than the 8-bit. Two, some monsters start appearing or vanishing after certain image numbers. Third, it is believed that every image has its own queue and (potentially) special encounter mechanics. So it's really hard to be sure if it is or isn't working or you're just being lucky. --Flargen 02:06, 25 March 2011 (UTC)

Banishment

It appears that banishment with the crystal skull can be overridden if the monster was a target of olfaction prior to banishment. Spading still needs to be done with Harold'S Hammer, and completed for the skull. --Lord Kes 20:04, 6 June 2012 (CEST)

Missing Skill

This skill appears to have vanished from my skill list sometime during the Silent Invasion event. Can anyone confirm? - Hamfish 02:30, 27 October 2012 (CEST)

  • I can un-confirm---I still have the skill. --Fig bucket 02:37, 27 October 2012 (CEST)
  • Hamfish: If your KoL account name is the same as your wiki account name, I can still see Olfaction in your perm'd skills list... --timrem 04:16, 27 October 2012 (CEST)
  • That's unusual. When viewing my profile it's not there, but it's on the list when viewing my profile "as others see it". It's not on my list of combat skills when I'm in a fight though, regardless of how much MP I have. I sent a bug report about it. I guess of this is just an isolated problem, feel free to delete this section. - Hamfish 07:51, 27 October 2012 (CEST)
    • I'm having the same problem. Olfaction seems to be unavailable to me. Bug report filed, no response yet. Could it be somehow related to having dropped a Bad Moon run? -- Matiash 20:28, 27 October 2012 (CEST)
      • Fixed after freeing the king -- 21:53, 27 October 2012 (CEST)

The Daily Dungeon

When I tried sniffing the monsters in the Daily Dungeon, I got the message:

"The dank air down here messes with your sense of smell."

And it still used up 40MP. However when sniffing an Apathetic Lizardman (still in the Daily Dungeon) I just got the normal, "too complex" message, without spending 40MP. I've only tested against the Wasp, the Moth, the Lizardman, the Tonic Elemental, and the Clam. --Fyll (talk) 10:03, 2 September 2013 (UTC)

Also got the "dank air" message against the Lime and the Pencil Golem today. --Fyll (talk) 08:21, 3 September 2013 (UTC)

I've tested it against all of the monsters down there now, and they all give the "dank air" message, except the Lizardman who gives the "too complex" message. I assume this is a bug on the Lizardman's part, and am adding the new message to the main page. --Fyll (talk) 09:16, 5 September 2013 (UTC)
I asked about the Lizardman situation and was told: "The lizardman's message comes because that monster is tagged specially -- this has to happen so people have a chance to react and avoid his Apathy buff rather than using combat macros and autoattacks." --Fyll (talk) 09:35, 7 September 2013 (UTC)
