As I suspected: the items from the choice adventures? Appear to be instant victory. Used this on the Gargantu-lihc, and got:

 You pull out the phylactery, and the gargantulihc utters an intense shriek
and lunges toward you.
 You're so startled by the sound that you accidentally drop the box into a
nearby brazier, where it is quickly consumed by flames.
 The gargantulihc looks at you, sighs, 
 and vanishes in a puff of irritated-looking ectoplasm.

So what's the difference between using this or beating Gargantulihc in combat?

I have the plus-sized phylactery in my inventory, but I just killed the gargantulihc in combat without using it. If this is a quest item, then just what does it do? I heard Skully say on the radio that certain in-game actions will unlock ascension options later. Is this one of those, or does the phylactery serve another purpose? Actually, it looks like all the Cyrpt areas drop a special item that works in combat against the big monster for that area. I wonder what happens if you use them all? Oh well, too late for me to try it!! ColtsScore 21:28, 26 June 2007 (CDT)

There are still numerous undiscovered trophies at the moment. I'm betting that this is one of them... Ah well, too late for me too to try it, though. Already killed two of them the regular way. :/ --Andemon 05:02, 27 June 2007 (CDT)

Bonerdagon stole my phylactery

I just tried using the phylactery in combat against the Bonerdagon. I used it 3 or 4 times, and got the message about not knowing how to open it. Also, on those combat rounds, my familiar and the Bonerdagon didn't do anything, or generate any combat/miss messages. I tried the phylactery again, but the Bonerdagon got to act first, and beat me up (I only had 2 or 3 HP left). Now, my phylactery is gone! Hmmm. ColtsScore 21:55, 26 June 2007 (CDT)

Use and death

• I just used this item to kill the gargantulihc and I just thought about what would have happend if I had low health, used the item so that the gargantulihc died, but then your familiar (stab bat or scary-death orb) attacks and kills you?   • You'll still win. The box will act before your familiar, so you'll win the fight first, and then get down to 0 HP. This idea is similar to the grillmaster- you can be on fire, lose all your HP, and strike, and still win--Argus 04:05, 30 July 2007 (CDT)
