Who and/or how was this discovered?--DrKirre 02:34, 1 July 2007 (CDT)

  • I am, as they say, magic. --Ricket 18:21, 2 July 2007 (CDT)
  • Degrassi Knoll?--Zelandoni 19:02, 2 July 2007 (CDT)
  • Remote Form Submission. Nobody has the familiar.--Unnatural20 02:32, 4 July 2007 (CDT)
  • No, not remote form submission. You probably mean URL manipulation. Which still isn't accurate. --Ricket 02:48, 4 July 2007 (CDT)

I think the question of "How does Ricket get this stuff?" is more interesting than the items themselves he posts. I smell a rat (or, maybe, a chatty /dev.) --Rentboy

  • Concurred. I doubt there's any way he can legitimately be finding all this stuff... Especially since hasn't even demonstrated the "how to get it" of any of the recent stuff.--Mojotech
    • I have a serious question. Why do people think devs are the most chatty fuckers ever? "Oh hey, has anyone found the pile of smoking rags yet? Here's the item ID and description." is not something a dev is ever going to say. Is it really that hard to believe that I managed to find a way to get item IDs and descriptions only? (Sorry, two questions.) --Ricket 15:40, 5 July 2007 (CDT)
      • In my case, Ricket, 'twas a joke. In all honesty, I'm just jealous of your 1337 unreleased-item accessing skillz. ;D --Rentboy 15:30, 7 July 2007 (PST)
  • I'm more than a pretty face, you know. I can, surprisingly, find things I shouldn't know about... And so can you! Attend my "How to speed ascend, spade, and find items you shouldn't know about" seminar I'm holding this Saturday at the Motel 6 in Intercourse, Pennsylvania, and you can be just like me! And remember, no dev is going to tell you shit, and if someone manages to get information from a dev, they're not going to be stupid enough to post it in a public place! --Ricket 19:21, 4 July 2007 (CDT)
    • There's no Motel 6 in Intercourse. The nearest one is down on route 30 in Gordonville- who are you trying to fool, here? --Unnatural20 00:37, 5 July 2007 (CDT)
      • I think he meant to type Motel 69. Common mistake. --J12601 15:55, 5 July 2007 (CDT)
      • Well, there should be. If you can go to a Motel 6 for intercourse, you should be able to go to one in Intercourse. It's only fair! -- Old Ned 00:48, 5 July 2007 (CDT)
        • Actually, my plan is to have Intercourse extend their boundries by Sauturday. --Ricket 15:40, 5 July 2007 (CDT)
          • Time's a wastin', Ricket; when are you going to expand the boundaries of my town? Hasn't happened yet.--Unnatural20 10:13, 6 July 2007 (CDT)

Disco Smith (#1213624) has this familiar. Here is the haiku: little red urchin/ sets your enemies on fire/ but keep it secret --Epithet 04:52, 12 July 2007 (CDT)

Possibilities

  • This item could be a (rare) drop from a normal monster. (New monster on fire that would cause smoking rags.. fire ants? Or rags = mummy wrappings? Just speculation.)
  • This item could be a drop from an ultra-rare monster.
  • This item could be a drop from Fernswarthy's Basement (it's item id# is near a couple other new drops from there).
  • This item could be the KoLcon giveaway item.
  • This item could be constructed from items. (Again, fire and rags. Possibly oil for the fire, maybe a spirit of some sort to animate it... again just speculation.)
  • This item could be from "Bad Moon" (aka superhardcore). The location of the Brimstone gear isn't known yet either, but would also follow the fire motif.
  • Brimstone and fire also would fit into a Friar's Gate / Hey Deze theme, but right now there doesn't seem to be any way to fully access Hey Deze.
  • This item could be somehow related with the macguffin diary.

If you want clues, kmail me in-game. I won't spoil it, but if you want to work it out yourself, I'll help you. User:DaemonStryker

Just some ideas I've been kicking around since seeing this item. Bakapyrite 16:33, 7 July 2007 (CDT)

I've been speculating this could be a device for people to regain 'forbidden' familiars after a Bad Moon run. The Smoldering box may serve a similar purpose. --RandomPrecision 16:35, 8 July 2007 (CDT)

  • I've been thinking that the smoldering box GIVES this item and several others. That or you get it instead of King Ralph's Letter, but that would require it to have many uses like the grue egg. --MrAndersonMan 17:24, 8 July 2007 (CDT)

user hotstuff has a familiar with no name (grog the 1 pound )--hexi 08:05, 10 July 2007 (CDT)

  • He's had that familiar for a long time. Like, before he started working for asymmetric. --Ricket 14:53, 10 July 2007 (CDT)

I strongly suspect that the MacGuffin diary is the key to this familiar. --Nekosoft 22:19, 11 July 2007 (CDT)

Interesting theories. Keep in mind that the familiar gets weaker as more people figure out how to get it, so its in your best interests to not colaborte to find it. And well, its more fun if you don't. --Anmbia 06:58, 12 July 2007 (CDT)

I'm locking this page to cease discussion. No spoiling.--Clackling 08:42, 12 July 2007 (CDT)

Discussion Status

I have re-opened this page so the discussion may continue. However, the related item pages have been locked and will remain locked to avoid blatant spoilerism. Spading is okay, but why would anyone want to collaborate on spading this item? It is to no one's benefit to tell others how to find this. And once you have it, you will not want the secret to get out either. So, while this page is now available, it is probably in everyone's best interest if we ignore it... And the admins will be watching these pages closely for anyone breaking the self-imposed silence. --jin 19:31, 12 July 2007 (CDT)

I'm not clear on the desire not to 'spoil' it for people who want to know, personally. Yes the smurf gets slightly less smurfy, but that's inevitable. Not wanting others to have something they want cause it devalues it for you isn't a feeling I share. That's simple selfishness, and completely separate from the other argument that the dev team asked you not to give it away. (I can't really call it 'spoiling' if you've found the wiki and started looking these things up. If you're scouring edit histories then you clearly just want to know the info.) 314159 12:19, 13 July 2007 (CDT)
  • Umm, I have it and I'm perfectly willing to spoil it, if it's okay. But it's not D: I suppose you could pm me in-game or something... >.> --Barstool 19:38, 12 July 2007 (CDT)
      • Sorry, not pm, but kmail me. I'm only gonna respond to kmails.--Barstool 16:44, 14 July 2007 (CDT)
    • I'm perfectly willing to spoil it as well. But I don't want to get banned. I like to give clues, though. --Emtu 19:57, 12 July 2007 (CDT)
    • If you want clues, you don't have to kMail me to get them. In fact, please don't. Look harder. --Emtu 21:21, 12 July 2007 (CDT)
    • STOP KMAILING ME! THAT'S NOT HOW YOU GET MY CLUES! --Emtu 21:53, 12 July 2007 (CDT)
    • No more clues from me. I had my Imp named a spoiler, but now if you name it that, it gets changed to Spoiler. --Emtu 17:28, 14 July 2007 (CDT)

There is a spoiler out there. A half one, at least. If you're absolutely desperate to know. It's not that hard to find, either, if you think about where spadey people hang out online. --Thræ (talk to me) 01:46, 14 July 2007 (CDT)

The puzzle is fun and not too hard once you know where to look and by researching a method for solving the problem. If you are curious about the content in the game there is a reasonable chance that something will stand out as strange; adding to this the knowlege that there is some puzzle to solve should be enough to prompt investigation. I would recomend that people ask for clues from friends who have it rather than getting blatent spoilers. Also may be worth noting on the page that it is impossible to get more than one of these, even if you dont use the first one.--Darkness 08:18, 15 July 2007 (CDT)

  • Really really one time or once per ascension? As soon as I can get an AFUE scroll, I'm going to try it again this run, even though I got one last run. It would be neat to have the hatchling in my DC as well as the fam in my terarrium. --Emtu 16:10, 17 July 2007 (CDT)
    • "Sorry, but that only works once. Don't tell your friends!" --Quietust (t|c) 19:10, 17 July 2007 (CDT)

What is the policy on spoiling this now? The imp is down to doing 1 damage per attack, so it's not like it will hurt anyone if it becomes public knowledge how to get this familiar...--CheezyBob 21:45, 18 July 2007 (CDT)

Could someone with the proper powers put the collection tag into the page? Thanks. --sl1me 04:48, 19 July 2007 (CDT)

I know exactly how to get the familiar, I'm just stuck on solving the thing that you need to do. I'm not very good at this type of spoiler spoiler. Can anyone k-mail me a hint or something? Also, I find it kind of lame that the wiki has a sudden spoiler moratorium, since we do spoil everything else in the entire game. The day NS13 was released we spoiled everything that was spaded so far. So what if the devs would rather we not discuss the imp and the leaflet words? --Missingno 16:47, 21 August 2007 (CDT)

So, does this (at 75:45) mean that now the wiki entries on the Imp and Rags can be unlocked? :) - The Wrassedragon 14:23, 25 September 2007 (CDT)

So you locked the talk page, huh? I just found out about this a few days ago (from reading the wiki) and I have to say, I'm surprised. Apart from the handful of people who have the patience to figure this out for themselves, all of you have gotten hints from your friends, essentially giving the familiar away, or else complete spoilers, either from friends or from other, unnamed websites. Then you come here and scream about how it's a secret, and the devs have ordered you not to share it. Either something is a secret or it's not - either it's special or it's not. I see nothing saying that the familiar should be a secret, except for a small clique, who can spoil it as much as they want.

Anyway, the behaviour of people here has been appalling. It's not fair to name anyone, I guess. All of you are douchebags, but at least some of you are honest, and not hypocrites. Just unbelievable. Mar 10:01, 22 October 2007 (CDT)

It is OK to spoil. Leave it alone

Look people. It was protected, now it's not. The Dev team has said on the J&S show THREE TIMES that it is ok to spoil since the experiment is now over. While I have no problem with it at the time being kept safe, at this point the imp is now a worthless familiar and it shall be that way for a long time. Let it go. As for Mar, for a while the devs DIDN'T want it spoiled, so the admin here respected their wishes and kept it unspoiled (unlike a lot of morons who didn't) until the devs said it was fine. So I'd apologize. The devs here was doing what they were asked to do, unlike frickin everyone else.--Ashallond 18:44, 22 October 2007 (CDT)
