Is the grammatical error Jick's, or from whoever wrote this into the wiki? Discworldian 05:53, 27 June 2007 (CDT)

the notes say it's useless, however couldn't it be used to hunt non bounty monsters, like when trying to get white pixels or something?... just saying maybe that could be a strategy for it...--Lote 14:42, 27 June 2007 (CDT)

This does seem like it should be more useful for queue manipulation rather than completing more bounties - however, spending forty adventures to get through something else marginally quicker seems a bad trade-off.--Thrower of stones 16:37, 27 June 2007 (CDT)

I think it's much more useful than it seems, because of the host of new quests. for example, suppose you wanted to farm for extra-potent gremlin mutagen - it would really be useful to meet some 18 erudite gremlins in 20 adventures. And the mutagen is tradable and will probably fetch a nice price, seeing as it's better than any other potion we had so far. Same holds for farming wads I would guess (though increasing the rate of encounter with a disembodied suit of armor probably isn't so smart now... Heh) --Trumpetdoor 03:42, 30 June 2007 (CDT)

Yeah I don't think it's unbalanced, but if you're going to an area anyway...or if you save them up for special events...how much does if change the chances of getting that monster? anyone willing to spade that one out?--Lote 11:07, 28 June 2007 (CDT)

I just bought two at once, the proper plural is 'odor extractors'.--Malarthi 23:24, 29 June 2007 (CDT)

This just screams "ultra-rare farming" to me. Unless Jick thought of that already... --Bicostp 21:14, 1 July 2007 (CDT)

  • Lets say it doubles the odds of fighting a particular monster. Okay. Now, instead of a 1 in 10,000 chance of fighting that Crazy Bastard, you have a 1 in 5,000 chance. You also have 40 adventures of those increased odds I think that you're preaching a self-defeating prophecy.--InvalidUser 00:32, 14 August 2007 (CDT)

Where does it say this is useless? Can't it be used to expedite the frequency of the precise combat encounters needed for the bounties? I'm sure I read something wrong, but it seems to me to be the items intended use. Just wanted to know if I missed something.--Velcrow 14:49, 4 July 2007 (CDT)

  • Yes, it could be, but if you do that, you are spending one lucre (40 adventures) to get another faster. So unless you can get the second one 40 adventures faster (i.e., instantaneously), you do worse than break even.--Thrower of stones 13:18, 11 July 2007 (CDT)
  • It's only useless if you're going bounty hunting. If, for example, you needed some fraudwort from demoninjas, then you could use this to get more of them so that you can complete the doc's quest faster. or, you could use this on a Knob Goblin Harem Girl to get the Knob Goblin perfume or the swindleblossom faster. It's actually pretty useful, if you think about it. if you need an item that only drops from one monster, then it's pretty helpful. --CG1:t,c,e 22:05, 11 July 2007 (CDT)

How could anyone call this useless? I've been using it for my gourdcoring, adn I belive its been helping drastically. The previously unsigned comment was made by TheBoyd on 23:08, 13 July 2007 (CDT)

  • Please sign your posts!! --Whiskeyzours 18:33, 17 August 2007 (CDT)

So you spend 40+ adventures a day getting one, then 20 adventures on the trail (once you actually FIND the monster). Meaning if the monster has less than 1/3 chance of appearing, it's worth it to use one of these. Sound reasonable? --Filmore 18:25, 17 August 2007 (CDT)

This could also help to fight all bloopers in the 8-bit realm for lots of white pixels --Mailbox head 11:48, 2 August 2007 (CDT)

This could be used for spading purposes too... just a suggestion --CG1:t,c,e 11:35, 18 August 2007 (CDT)

Crazy Theory

This is a ridiculous, untested hypothesis, but is it possible that if you use the Extractor on particular monsters, something other than On the Trail happens? I'm not sure what that would be, but I can't shake this feeling that there's some hidden content in here. I certainly don't have the resources to spade every monster in the kingdom, but maybe if people were interested, we could distribute the workload? --Iason 12:24, 15 September 2007 (CDT)

Unfortunately you can use the odor extractor on Halloween monsters, but it wouldn't track them. What a waste. --James111222 22:31, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

  • It's probably an oversight; these aren't normally usable on holiday encounters like the Feast of Boris monsters. --Itsatrap 23:17, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
