is it possible?

       -peter_144(#1030742)
  • You requested the article 27 hours after the article was actually created (Counterclockwise Watch), and you also got the name slightly wrong (counterclockwise clock). Sorry. --'Ivan 06:33, 5 February 2007 (CST)

CAPTCHAs Broken

It shouldn't take 7 tries to enter one friggin URL. Lookit Repeating crossbow. All I added was the quote to IMDB, sourcing my quote.

CAPTCHA. When you absolutely, positively got to PISS OFF every KoLer in the room, accept no substitutes.

I am aware of Discussion/archive2#CAPTCHAs_Br0ken. That discussion was silently archived. There are no other hits for CAPTCHA in the wiki and the issue is still broken.

--Einstein9073 19:35, 25 August 2006 (CDT)
  • I've never had any problems with captchas, as long as I do lowercase.--Dehstil (t|c) 21:15, 25 August 2006 (CDT)
  • Then document that they have to be lowercase, or fix the images to be in lowercase. Oh, and a different font so the "O" and "D" look different would be nice. Einstein9073 10:45, 26 August 2006 (CDT)
  • They are in lowercase, but the font is weird. It's on our list of things to do but can't easily access.--Dehstil (t|c) 12:57, 26 August 2006 (CDT)
  • Ok, it now says "you'll need to type in the words (in lowercase) that appear in this image". ;) --Dehstil (t|c) 19:58, 27 August 2006 (CDT)

Critical Hit/Fumbles for monsters

Can you guys program a new tag specially for critical hits and fumbles, maybe putting a red CRITICAL HIT!: <message> in front and perhaps a blue FUMBLE!: <message> so that the combat messages become clearer?--Thekmt 01:30, 30 August 2006 (CDT)

Eight New Zones

"The wiki is going to follow this request and not allow posting of ANY new content related to zones until the rollover after. Really. This is not a joke."

Seriously, what the fuck. This wiki is by definition a SPOILER SITE. And who just laid down the law and decided this? I strongly disagree with this. I won't disobey, because I value this wiki as a resource I can augment whenever I will, and the same heavy-handedness that was used to make this decision will probably result in my account being disabled if I go against this. Currently, I am unable to check the new zones and will not be able to for a few weeks, as I am currently doing some speed runs, and cannot deviate from my planned course. I would really like to log on to the wiki and see the new content. Now. --rkMerafel 23:45, 19 September 2006 (CDT)

  • I have to agree. The update says (and I quote) "As always with new content, though, please refrain from posting spoilers in chat or the forums for at least a couple of days." If Jick had specifically said "hey guys please don't spoil this anywhere, even the wiki okay" then maybe I'd understand, but this is a spoiler site, and if people don't want to be spoiled, they won't look up what they don't want to be spoiled. --Stak 23:48, 19 September 2006 (CDT)
  • It's gone. Bad idea. I don't know, I roughly equated it to the leaflet words everyone tries so hard to protect. I would think that those that find the new zones would hold back anyways for at least a day to milk out new items' values.--SomeStranger (t|c) 23:50, 19 September 2006 (CDT)
  • First of all, I don't know who decided we would not immediately start adding stuff to the wiki as it was discoved. It wasn't me. I always thought the "48 Hour rule" applied to rKoL, KoL Chat, and the KoL forums, not any third parties. Second, I do not consider the wiki to be a "spoiler site". I consider the wiki to be a "complete catalogue of KoL content"(past and present), alliteration included. It "spoiling" is just a side effect of being complete. I have not idea why we wouldn't want the logging begin, since there will be a lot to do. Thirdly, cussing never helps anyhting, all it does is piss people off... sometimes even though they may even agree with you. Fourth, I hate how the "announcment" links to the main page's talk page. This page should be for discussion about the main page, not general discussion.--JRSiebz (|§|) 23:54, 19 September 2006 (CDT)
    • On a side note, it'd be nearly impossible to stop without making the wiki read only for 2 days, since it's a wiki "anyone can edit it". I'm not caertainly going to concern myself with deleting every new page that pops up... (unless it's garbage fo course). --JRSiebz (|§|) 00:01, 20 September 2006 (CDT)
  • Well, thanks for being reasonable, SomeStranger. JRSiebz, if you had a clue, you would know that SS posted a link here for use to "yell at you", so don't start mouthing off. The Admins of KoL have every right to say "no spoilers" on their sites, but they have no jurisdiction here, and it is down to the individual to decide whether or not to post spoilers. If I were spading, I certainly would be. And Stak makes an excellent point, "this is a spoiler site, and if people don't want to be spoiled, they won't look up what they don't want to be spoiled" Reason prevails. --rkMerafel 23:59, 19 September 2006 (CDT)
    • "JRSiebz, if you had a clue, you would know that SS posted a link here for use to "yell at you", so don't start mouthing off." I have no idea what you are talking about here. I think you may have me confused with yourself... or something. --JRSiebz (|§|) 00:08, 20 September 2006 (CDT)
  • To make it up to you guys I spoiled 50% of the new zones on the Tuesday page.--SomeStranger (t|c) 00:03, 20 September 2006 (CDT)
  • Now that the content is fairly complete, please consider running my feature.  :) --DataVortex 04:38, 22 September 2006 (CDT)

Shields

There's no category/page for shields. Is there any objection to creating one, and adding all the shields to this category? --Starwed 08:43, 25 September 2006 (CDT)

  • Sorry, I was half asleep when I wrote that; there is clearly a shield category. Still no page, though, so I might add that some time. --Starwed 08:06, 27 September 2006 (CDT)
    • A shield category with a nice overview would be very welcome for all the newbie smiths like me.--Peterwhimsey 11:34, 23 November 2006 (CST)

I Was Thinking...

I was thinking, shouldn't we add what each weapon says when you hit an enemy, on there page? I just kinda thought it to be a good idea, but if not then oh well. Bassium!

Being more like Wikipedia

Should we include on the main page a 'picture/avatar of the day' or a 'did you know?'. Also the probably the tuesday updates should be plastered directly on the main page. Laststand 18:20, 1 January 2007 (CST)

Agh. Bad grammar.

Admit it. You have been playing for months, ascended a few times - you know the ropes. Then as Cpryd001 states in a recent post, (http://forums.kingdomofloathing.com/viewtopic.php?t=74564) you find yourself gving a blank stare at Hagnks', because I have no idea what I should pull. I can't fix this atrocious grammar because it's pulled in from a feed. Sigh. --Improv 12:12, 3 January 2007 (CST)

  • In what way is this relevant to the Main Page? If it is not directly pertaining to the Main Page it should not be on the talk page of the Main Page. If you want to discuss the greater wiki, use Discussion. Thanks.--SomeStranger (t|c) 20:51, 3 January 2007 (CST)
    • It was transcluded on the mainpage via RSS. --Improv 06:26, 6 January 2007 (CST)
      • Oh...that is horrific. Well, it's gone now.--SomeStranger (t|c) 08:32, 6 January 2007 (CST)
        • Yup. S'all good. I might've been a bit too dramatic in my phrasing anyhow :) Take care. --Improv 10:51, 6 January 2007 (CST)
          • Thanks guys. I don't see how starting a statement with 'Giving blank stares...' as atrocious grammar, but any improvement on my language skills is always a good thing. (As well as a kick in the nads)--Cpryd001 09:24, 16 January 2007 (CST)

2 More Quick links

I am a KoL n00b, and I noticed that there are two quick links that I think would be helpful to other n00bs: the Calendar page and the Weapons page. Is there any reason not to have them as quick links? --BSnake 19:31, 10 January 2007 (CST)

  • The Calendar is already linked to by clicking on the KoL month and day by the moons on the upper-right corner. I'm not sure if it's worth expanding Items to include Weapons though, because if you did people would wonder why hats, accessories, shirts, pants, etc... are not listed. I think it may be worth it to add Category:Equipment though. --TheDotGamer 19:49, 10 January 2007 (CST)
    • I'd look at Special:Popularpages for some ideas or persuasion for or against various quicklinks.--Dehstil (t|c) 20:00, 10 January 2007 (CST)
      • That's good and all, but unfortunately it doesn't list categories there. Granted, if they were there the Weapons category would only fall right around the mid 70s, while the category Items would be in the top ten. Also, a lot from that list is due to being linked to from the main page. --TheDotGamer 07:18, 11 January 2007 (CST)

Main Page Columns

May I suggest using a fixed-length column definition for the "So You'd Like..." bar on the right? When there's a long URL link in the Coldfront news, the right bar gets so squished it can only fit one or two words in per row. Or I guess someone could write some code to automatically parse the URLs using HTML and some default text like "link". --Bagatelle 22:24, 3 February 2007 (CST)

  • A fixed-width for the second column would not help much when there is a really long url in the first column; it would simply make a horizontal scrollbar. If we made the first column fixed-width, the long url would overflow into the second column. The bast way would be if the articles didn't include long urls, preferably without parsing.--Dehstil (t|c) 17:31, 4 February 2007 (CST)

April 2007 IotM

Hello-ho, it's the bad penguin egg! Not the dandy lion cub - that was last month. :-) --Mr Crac 07:42, 2 April 2007 (CDT)

  • Why yes, yes it is. I updated the respective template. --TheDotGamer 08:08, 2 April 2007 (CDT)

Sneaky Pete's Day?

Uhh, it's most definitely NOT St. Sneaky Pete's day...No main page announcement, no green beer making...I don't know WHY that's on the front page...--Dante5454 16:50, 3 April 2007 (CDT)

  • Ooh, I'll tell you why: Jick accidentally made it St. Sneaky Pete's Day earlier today, but fixed it, so now you know. :P--Dehstil (t|c) 16:55, 3 April 2007 (CDT)

Oyster Egg day?

Last time i checked, Oyster Egg day had finished, so i dont know why the wiki is still announcing it

Mrjingjing 13:04 GMT, 9th april 07

Ok now, now its changed. Problem solved :)

Special at snoote and microbrewery

Maybe it would be interesting to see a space where there is the current special at snoote and the mircrobrewery. --Thomadaneau 15:41, 20 April 2007 (CDT)

I fully support this idea, and believe it would be quite an asset to those attempting to quickly ascend, or who are planning out their ascentions. --Skyl3lazer 19:12, 22 May 2007 (CDT)

Moons

  • the moons are out of synch. the minimoon is behind by what looks to be three slots. how would one fix this? --Evilkolbot 07:44, 28 April 2007 (CDT)
    • Umm, it looks fine to me - Ronald waxing gibbous (with white minimoon on right side) and Grimace waning gibbous, exactly the same as it shows up in the game. Browser cache issue, perhaps? --Quietust (t|c) 12:51, 28 April 2007 (CDT)
    • looks to be. oh well. --Evilkolbot 13:04, 28 April 2007 (CDT)

New Item Of The Month

Since i last checked, Jick stated he would not release the item of the month until some issues had been sorted, but the wiki is still advertising the mayflower boquets, which need fixing

Mrjingjing 03:36, 1 June 2007 (CDT)

NS13

Should we have a countdown until NS13 on the Main Page? Something like this:

3 days until NS13!

Just a thought, seeing as how it's such a big deal and all. TimRem 00:16, 12 June 2007 (CDT)

  • Good idea. It's added. --Quietust (t|c) 08:21, 12 June 2007 (CDT)

Countdown

is there a way that a countdown till the next predicted holiday could be placed on the main page or the calender page (like the NS13 countdown but for other holidays)

  • That would be rather complicated (but probably not impossible), though I'm not sure how useful it will be. The code for the NS13 countdown is relatively simple because it is occurring this month (in real life, not in KoL). Anything crossing (real) months would certainly complicate the matter. It would probably just be easier to go to the calendar page and count the days yourself. If you want, I can still look into that coding, but even then I can't promise anything. TimRem 16:40, 17 June 2007 (CDT)

tuesday link

could we add a "Tuesday Updates' link (or something like that) to the "quick links" section of the main page The previous unsigned comment was made by Noinamg (talk | contribs) at 2007-06-18T01:09:55

  • While it is technically not on the quick links, it is in the navigation menu in the left sidebar. --Bagatelle 21:15, 18 June 2007 (CDT)

Jumped the gun?

The main page says NS13 is here, but at http://kingdomofloathing.com/ it's still rollover. What happeded there?--Munkel (talk) 00:12, 25 June 2007 (CDT)

  • It updated automatically at midnight, so I wouldn't have to update it by hand. --Quietust (t|c) 00:34, 25 June 2007 (CDT)

Larvas?

The plural of larva is larvae, not larvas. Just saying. --rkMerafel 03:22, 1 October 2007 (CDT)

Two ideas

We should have the BHH and Semi-rares under the "So You'd Like To:" section. I find them very wonderful and useful, so If they could be added I would be happy. --Blazingthunder 10:03, 10 November 2007 (CST)

Recent wiki downtime solution suggestion

The recent spat of wiki downtime has obviously been an issue for a lot of KoL players. Here's a suggestion: can we set up an export of the wiki and import it into a read-only backup of the wiki, hosted in a totally different place (say, Dreamhost)? The backup doesn't have to be ultra-reliable or anything, but the likelihood of both the backup and the main wiki being down at the same time cuts the risk of complete unavailability.

Keeping the backup wiki read-only eliminates all of the crazy "how do we sync the two" nonsense. Just having a copy of the wiki in read-only mode hosted elsewhere while the main wiki is down temporarily is tremendously valuable.

If the wiki admins will give me a database dump of the wiki nightly (without the user tables, of course), I'd be happy to set it up at Dreamhost in read-only mode. Admins, email me if you'd be willing to set this up. --Dossy 11:18, 2 December 2007 (CST)

  • The wiki is already backed up regularly! Whenever a site I need goes down, I use an internet archive. Also, google keeps a cached version of every page it indexes.--Dehstil (t|c) 16:16, 2 December 2007 (CST)
    • There's plenty of services that crawl the web mirroring stuff, but that'll only provide one revision for each page, and doesn't get updated that frequently. A full database dump would be much better. --Missingno 17:25, 4 December 2007 (CST)

new moon

should the new crimbo moon be added to the main page with the other moons?--Noinamg 18:49, 10 December 2007 (CST)

  • probably not: it's most likely going to be temporary. --CG1:t,c,e 21:01, 10 December 2007 (CST)

Crimbo

can we have a link to crimbo on the front page please?

How about we put up what holiday it currently is, or the next one coming up. That way we don't always have people asking to put up whatever holiday it is. --Blazingthunder 09:36, 23 December 2007 (CST)

Can someone fix the main page?

seems like it think's it's 2007. Unfortunately, I'm not sure where that template is located.--Toffile 00:27, 1 January 2008 (CST)

  • The wiki runs in a different time zone. I forget which on but it is still 2007 in the time zone setting the wiki runs on. --Chunky_boo 00:29, 1 January 2008 (CST)
    • No. January 1st 2007 was a Feast of Boris. January 1st 2008 is not. The template doesn't change based on year, just day. I found it and fixed it temporarily.--Toffile 00:32, 1 January 2008 (CST)

  • Which is virtually the same as the 121 points gained listed on the PS wiki article? I'm just trying to work out why this is front page material :p--Sir Spanky 18:36, 5 January 2008 (CST)

Holidays

Have we considered making an official page for all of the holidays to be listed on? And if it exists, shouldn't it be linked to from the main page? I think it would be useful. --Rabidzora 13:39, 3 February 2008 (CST)

  • See Kingdom of Loathing Calendar. I don't see the utility of linking it on the main page, as holidays aren't things that are used "every day," and the holiday pop-ups on the day in question, link to the specific holiday, which itself will link to the calendar page. --Bagatelle 20:42, 3 February 2008 (CST)

Why does the wiki page say it is valentines day when the kingdome isnt?--Caocao1 06:22, 10 February 2008 (CST)

June IotM

On the mainpage, the June IotM is spelled wrong, it doesn't need the extra 'e' at the end. :) --Flamedude 21:58, 1 June 2008 (CDT)

  • No, but the plural does. --TechSmurf 21:59, 1 June 2008 (CDT)
    • It's not plural though --Flamedude 11:32, 2 June 2008 (CDT)
      • Er, yes it is. The announcement's always had the pluralized item. --TechSmurf 11:38, 2 June 2008 (CDT)
        • We did that to show off the new Data: pages when we first created them.--SomeStranger (t|c) 16:33, 2 June 2008 (CDT)
  • Yeah, same complaint about the July IotM. Fireworkss <- extra 's'.--Gleezus 13:37, 7 July 2008 (CDT)

News entries and links

I've noticed that news articles on the main page seem to have issues with links. The current one I'm seeing is causing a substantial horizontal scroll bar because of this, for example. The problem being that the main page isn't converting the links to hyperlinks, and just leaves the full text of the url where it is. If I click on the "read more" link, I see it formatted in a nicer, hyper-text format. Can something be done about this? It makes the front page look rather ugly whenever there is a link in the current news article. --Flargen 16:27, 2 June 2008 (CDT)

  • This has been mentioned multiple times. It has to do with the way Jinya wrote the initial extension. Drop a line on her talk page to remind her.--SomeStranger (t|c) 16:30, 2 June 2008 (CDT)
