The "safe as houses" and "watch dial" parts of the description reference radium jaw (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radium_jaw), a horrifying sickness that hit young girls who were hired to paint the luminous parts of watch dials. They would touch the brush to their lips to make a fine point and thus ingested radium, which they had been assured was completely harmless and non-toxic. Pontifex 17:24, 4 June 2011 (UTC)
