This is a tiny little water pipe, perfect for giving your familiar
lung cancer. Er, I mean, perfect for allowing your familiar to
relax and enjoy itself in a manner which is nobody's business but
your familiar's. Besides, your familiar can quit anytime it wants,
it just doesn't want to right now.

Type: familiar equipment
Cannot be traded
Cannot be discarded

Enchantment:
+5 to Familiar Weight
Magical Smoke!

I don't know how to make a Wiki page, but here is the information from the Item Description.

Granite_Grizz

Here is a small list of the effects I encountered, in no particular order. Spooky Pants, Orchid Blood, Pulchritudinous Pressure, Full Bottle in front of Me, In the Saucestream, Dilated pupils, Crocodile Tear, Ode to Booze, Anytwo Five Elevenis?, Can't be a Chooser, Corruption of Wretched Wally, Mysteriously Handsome, Hyphemariffic, Stenchtastic, Badger Underfoot, (Scrappy, Shadowy), Stimulated Body, Rage of the Reindeer, Got Your Boots On, Woad Warrior, Shamboozled, Material Witness, Strength of Ten Ettins, Mighty Shout, Ham-Fisted, Assaulted with Pepper, Frozen Shoulders, Spooky Weapon, Billiards Belligerence, Elron's Explosive Etude, Fever From the Flavor, Cotton Mouthed --Zourath 03:50, 6 March 2010 (UTC)

I think it can give any beneficial buff. Standouts for me have been On the Trail, Burning Hands, and Bitterskin. --Pronell 18:54, 6 March 2010 (UTC)

  • On the Trail? What monster did it say you sniffed when you got that effect?--Erich 06:42, 8 March 2010 (UTC)
  • I just got "on the trail" from this, and checked. It had put me on the trail of the most recent monster which I had sniffed, which was not what I was fighting (and I wasn't on the trail of anything at the time). --Campboy 11:46, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

Appears to require 5 combats to be started between giving buffs. You can scrap out of the combats and receive additional hookah-given buffs after the "counter" runs down. "Counter" not seeming to be affected by non-combat adventures.--Tivolimom 23:39, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

All effects?

I think that there's probably some effects that will never show up, for example- Blessed by the RNG. Heck, I'd be surprised if you could get stuff like Half-Astral. On a similar note, can you get essentially 'neutral' effects, such as "Light!"? If anyone ever encountered any of these, its defiantly worth noting.--Mr. Green 04:19, 8 March 2010 (UTC)

  • It gave me Haiku State of Mind, which is 'neutral,' I guess. Any idea if it gives chat effects?--Tivolimom 05:40, 8 March 2010 (UTC)

I found an interesting fact: using a free runaway *does* decrement the internal counter used to determine when the hookah gives you another buff... by doing this one can, for instance: enter combat & receive a buff, popper out, & rinse/repeat (theoretically) indefinitely to acquire 6 turns of every possible buff. i havent had more than 3x hookah buffs running at any one time yet, so perhaps this could be spaded to see if the same buff would ever come around again... if not, what might happen if one acquired all buffs & tried for one more? --Quickbaby 11:34, 20 March 2010 (EDT)

Has anyone gotten the hobo buffs from the marketplace?(Chalky White Pallor, Healthy Bronze Glow, etc?) Kinks 23:29, 31 March 2010 (UTC) Yes-I just got It Didn't Kill You. --VinnyB 08:22, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

Some spading ideas

So does it give +combat and +non-combat buffs?? And if you already had a +combat effect, does it see that and give only +combat accordingly and vice versa. Also, i think we should have a table somewhere (probably on a seperate page) listning the effects it gives. --Fhthd 14:29, 8 March 2010 (UTC)

  • I just got Carlweather's Cantata of Confrontation from the hookah. This was with the hound dog at 30 pounds, so it was +5% combats before. Just a data point. --GoldS 05:48, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

No "special-zone" effects?

Given that the hookah can't give absinthe or the llama gong effects, would it be safe to assume it can't give half-astral either? Also, possibly Down the Rabbit Hole. --Emtu 01:42, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

  • It can't give half-astral according to the relevant forum post. The badger is a June familiar, too. --Flargen 01:55, 11 March 2010 (UTC)
    • I did get Down the Rabbit Hole from it last night. --Tivolimom 02:55, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

Could sombody please put the message the item gives you when your familiar uses it on the page if it has one! Nobody has even mentioned it in the comments, what the hell?--Tombot 01:08, 12 March 2010 (UTC)

  • Ok, added. --Emtu 19:26, 14 March 2010 (UTC)

In my experience this appears to re-trigger the adventure after the previous effect expires, so about every 6 adventures. Is this true for anyone else? --Emtu 19:26, 14 March 2010 (UTC)

  • sorry about the accidental cross-edit.
  • nice spading effort, thanks. could you cross-reference your list with the list of buffs to see that the statement "most non-detrimental buffs" and the current list of exclusions are both correct? --Evilkolbot 09:09, 21 March 2010 (UTC)
    • Fixed the formatting for you. And you got Coated in Slime? That shouldn't be on there...--Toffile 15:04, 21 March 2010 (UTC)

--Spiny Twizzler 23:30, 28 April 2010 (UTC)

just so you all know, it re-smokes after 6 turns, regardless of whether you have the effect or not. --The ErosionSeeker 20:15, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

Got Kung Fu Fighting from it on a multi today. --Greycat 19:32, 13 January 2011 (UTC)

Total Effect

I was wondering if anyone wanted to help me spade/endlessely slave to figure out the average percentages. By which I mean the average percent of, lets say item drops. This WOULD be including all the other effects. I made it to C (coming up roses) on the effect table. -Slasher Mashter —Preceding unsigned comment added by Slasher99die (talkcontribs) on 10:59, 2010 June 5

Do you mean average number of times you get a particular effect? At this point the belief (until evidence points otherwise) is that all possible effects are equally likely. What the set is of all possible effects is not fully spaded. I've been working on the (presumed same) list with Knob Göblin lòve potions. See that talk page for the link to my results. --Club (#66669) (Talk) 20:23, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

What he means is finding out every effect you can get from the Hookah, adding their effects up, then dividing by the number of effects you can ever possibly get from the Hookah to determine the average bonus it gives. Usful for determining whether the Hookah is optimal for something. --Zourath 00:58, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

It's not optimal for any of the bonuses it gives. You'd always be better off just voluntarily getting whatever bonuses you want. Figuring out the "averages" would be basically worthless.--P4n1q 06:24, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

While finding the overall average seems pointless, simply knowing (approximately) how many unique effects are obtainable--and thus the likelihood of receiving a particular effect--could helpful to people seeking a particular (and often otherwise unobtainable) buff. One difficulty to compiling a comprehensive list is that TPTB can change it as they please. During the first month of its release, the hookah could produce many effects that it no longer can. I've been collecting data on two accounts that have used the hookah almost exclusively since the month after its release, and have yet to receive a single cupcake, snowcone, or pressurized buff, despite several prolonged tatterfests; contrary to page's notes, I believe all of the mutually exclusive effects have been removed. (The base pair buffs are still acquirable, but those are only mutually exclusive in a given combat; for example, you could stack them using BRICKO monsters.) New beneficial effects seem to promptly become available: I've received the buffs from Cinco Mayo Lager, The Art of Slapfighting, and Juju Mojo Mask (and probably others I'm forgetting) almost immediately after their release. More to come... --VinnyB 16:19, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

Point of combat when it triggers?

The smoke-blowing effect appears at the beginning of combat. However, the random effect it grants doesn't always appear to be taken into account immediately. For example, I've fumbled immediately after the hookah give me a "No Fumble" effect. And I've [i]not[i] overkilled a Town Square hobo (that is, I've killed it with few enough damage that it doesn't explode), despite the Hookah giving me a massive Muscle buff. (All of the next five rounds were overkills.) This may just be an issue in the first round of combat. Also, in both of those instances, autoattack was on; could that be relevant?--VinnyB 16:55, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

  • Did you get 4k adventures of Ode from the hookah? If so, that's odd. If not then your list is contaminated and not that useful. I've been using the bugged potions and keeping careful notes with those. Current theory is that they are the same effect list. With over 5k used, I've seen 505 different effects. • Ah, okay. I forgot to mention that at the time, I had Wasabi Sinuses, Elemental Saucesphere, Empathy and Polka on. While I am pretty sure these can come from the hookah as well, I guess they should be thrown out. I am certain the rest of the effects are from the hookah though. --Shademaster00 01:55, 14 January 2011 (UTC)

Not sure if this fits, but I got the 'On the trail' effect from the hookah while I already had that effect going and it extended it six turns. I'm not sure what forces are at work with that effect.--Tombot 00:40, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

I finished a Way of the Surprising Fist Ascension and had Earthen Fist active in aftercore when I received the Earthen Fist-Buff from the hookah. --Yatsufusa 02:48, 9 December 2011 (CET)

No 2nd hookah?

I have tried several times to get a 2nd hookah. Once with the first in my inventory, a 2nd with it in my DC. It does not appear to be possible to get a 2nd one. I assume since there are people with more than one in their DC, that something must have changed at some point? QVamp (talk) 22:12, 17 June 2013 (UTC)

  • It was always my understanding that you can get a second of familiar hatchlings you're not supposed to get a second of as long as you can do it in Bad Moon. For example: farm 1,000 nickels and get the hobo monkey before breaking the prism and getting all your familiars back. There could a similar kind of isolation going on for items currently in Hagnk's, but I never did it myself and have just recently returned from quite a long KoL-pause so I'm not quite sure.
In the case of an item that requires stuff only attainable by different classes I can't tell. Maybe your best chance was to do a hc-run, break the prism, pull the gift items (but not the hookah) and try to get a second one. From what I remember, this might not work if your other hookah is in your dc. Again: I never did it myself.
Why the limit was implemented in the first place I can't tell, since every time people run into one of these barriers, they get unhappy. --Yatsufusa (talk) 03:58, 11 August 2013 (UTC)

Bad Moon Effects

Can you get any of the Bad Moon effects? They usually have a positive and a negative effect or do nothing, so i was wondering if you could get any of the Bad Moon effects like Missing Kidney, Your #1 Problem, etc. --Kingskybomber14 (talk) 03:03, 10 November 2014 (UTC)

The hookah is thought to use the same list of effects as the Knob Göblin lòve potion, which almost certainly does not include the Bad Moon effects. --Vorzer (talk) 04:32, 10 November 2014 (UTC)
