All right... I have over 200 Muscle, this skill, and I've got a shield equipped... why am I still taking damage?

How, exactly, does this skill work?

Moxie has two functions in preventing the damage you take. First, it determines whether you get hit. Second, it determines how much damage you take when you do get hit.

This skill changes the second part of that to use muscle instead. So, you get hit just as often... But when you get hit, the amount of damage you take is scaled down by your muscle, instead of by your moxie. When you're a muscle class, that means you'll usually be taking significantly less damage when you get hit than you otherwise would be. This would be a really nice skill, if it didn't make your character forget how to do things it previously knew how to do. Unfortunately, it removes options when not a muscle class, so it's not a good skill to make permanent. --Carl 16:30, 21 April 2006 (CDT)

It only applies when you're using a shield in the off-hand. Mysticality classes usually use a cookbook, and Moxie classes usually have two-handed ranged weapons. The only limit I can see at the moment is using a Moxie class in the Cola Wars Battlefield (in disguise), where the shield will force you to take extra damage.PotatoEngineer 13:32, 16 May 2006 (CDT)

Scaling enemies

How does this skill work when fighting enemies that scale with your stats? For instance, if you equip a shield with your Wand of Nagamar when fighting the Naughty Sorceress, and wear a Furry Suit so that your moxie goes down, are you at a relative advantage or does her defense scale to your muscle? • Her attack scales, as normal, to your moxie -- this can make Hero incredibly powerful when fighting scaling enemies. --DirkDiggler 18:10, 22 February 2007 (CST)

  • um, what exactly do TMNT and some naked chick on a scallop shell have to do with each other, exactly? please explain. --Evilkolbot 11:43, 22 February 2007 (CST)
  • I'm guessing that the reference-adder is referring to the similarity between the song title/lyric "Heros of the half-shell," and the painting's being referred to as "Venus on the half-shell", and assuming that the former is actually intended by the songwriters as a play on the latter. --Hellion 16:45, 22 February 2007 (CST)
  • I agree -- the "Heroes in a half-shell" line and the jokey "Venus on the half-shell" epithet are both puns on the dish "Oysters on the Half Shell."--DirkDiggler 18:07, 22 February 2007 (CST)

Bug? (probably not)

I noticed that with a shield equipped, the message about fending off the attack with your shield still appears even though my muscle is lower than my moxie, the damage appears to be the same with or without the shield though. Mikachu 13:35, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

Amusingly I just noticed this playing against a 1335 hacker... :)
  • No longer an issue... Trivial Updates: July 06 - The message you get from Hero of the Half Shell about fending off damage with your shield now only displays if the skill actually triggers. --Terion 05:42, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
