Equipment Tables Updated 2007-12-26

OK, so I'm about to spam the Recent Changes page with a bunch of large edits to the equipment lists. Not sure if everyone is going to like the changes, so please leave suggestions for things you'd like changed back (or additional changes you'd like to see) here before I move on to the mechanics tables, which will be more of a headache. Skimming through the diffs, I don't think I introduced anything untoward, but if there are major problems, please post here as no one should be forced to clean up my own messes. Anyway, the main changes:

  • Centered/unbulleted to left-justified and bulleted. My personal feeling is that this makes it easier to visually parse things with multiple or long note entries. This is the de facto standard on the mechanics pages.
  • Shortened the requirements field to take up less page real estate. These pages are getting loooong.
  • Sorted by descending numerical key (stat requirement or power as appropriate), leaving the "nones" at the bottom, and then by item name, via how I think dictionaries sort (essentially, strip all special characters and spaces, upcase, and order as normal).
  • Class-only: moved from Requirements column to Notes... For the diamond-studded cane, at least, any class can equip it, but only the class gets the bonus.
  • Tried to display enchantments as they would appear in the game's pop-up. The exceptions would be joint modifiers like joint HP/MP increase/regen, which is easier to show/parse/link separated, and pages where the mechanic page is named differently than the enchantment ("Item Drops from Monsters"). Real estate/page size issues again.
  • I debated whether the links to the mechanics tables should be left off the page (size issues... again), as {{Dressing}} could be easily modified to include all mechanics tables. However, it's handy to have links in the place being browsed... So thoughts either way?
  • Deleted "bought from stores for X Meat/dropped on SSPD Y/crafting ingredient" comments--not very useful, I think (nor very well maintained, that I could see). Kept Ascension reward/Raffle/UR/custom item notes, though, as they would be useful filters.
  • Weapons tables: changed full weapon sub-type column to "Hands" instead. I think it's only relevant for crossbows/chefstaves (which I've tried to note in the Notes field) and Crossbow Fever/Spirit of Rigatoni. Also changed requirements to never be None, always displaying at least 0 Mus/Mys/Mox, which provides a visual cue as to whether the weapon is melee/Myst/ranged. Nays?
  • On a related note, should Staves be deleted? Doesn't seem to be a point to it now that Spirit has changed. There's also a lot of duplication of the exact same content between Weapons (by requirement) and melee weapons/ranged weapons/Mysticality weapons; they are the exact same tables except sorted differently (can be fixed using sorttable).
  • Relatedly relatedly, Shields (by DR) isn't even linked to in the nav template (and is almost completely orphaned...), but apparently people are aware of the page and are keeping it up-to-date. However, shields could be flagged on the Off-hand Items page/Damage Reduction page to reduce maintenance effort.

    • My thoughts, in some vague semblance of order:
      • Bulleted left-alignment is a good thing. I'm surprised these pages weren't done that way.
      • I like having them linking to mechanics, assuming you're talking about things such as Muscle Modifiers being linked from notes and such. I use those links rather often, myself.
      • Nay on displaying 0 Mus/Mys/Mox for weapons with no requirement. Seems unnecessary, and they're all broken up into their own pages anyway.
      • I've got no problem with the tables listing the full weapon-types. It doesn't take up that much space, in my eyes.
      • Shields by DR... Hmm. That should probably just be nixed and the Damage Reduction page used instead. It's all duplicate information, if you sort by source on the DR page.
      • Staves can safely be removed, I think. Or turned into a redirect for the weapon category, at any rate. --TechSmurf 20:24, 26 December 2007 (CST)
    • OKey doke. I'll go ahead as planned for now, but will change the 0 Stat/full item description back in a few days unless people are overwhelming against such. *starts making Wiki multis* --Bagatelle 20:40, 26 December 2007 (CST)

A Mad Tea Party

Does anyone mind me adding a column for the number of non-whitespace characters in hat names? It's relevant for the tea party buff, so I expect it will be useful. Alternatively, a Hats (by name length) page could be created or something like that, but I think this would work better. --Lostcalpolydude 06:28, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

  • Only if we can add the number of vowels. And consonants. And maybe after that we can get around to sorting it by syllables. Really, we should make a list of every possible lexicographic measure we can think of. Just make a minor list of easily obtainable hat suggestions for how to get each buff for the Tea Party. A column that only has one use in the entire game, and is for an extremely limited use at that. If they make more things based off of lexicographic measures, I'll say go crazy. Until then, it's overkill.--Toffile 06:39, 5 March 2010 (UTC)
    • Seems to be spaded to be just number of letters, so why not? If it becomes a burden in the future revisiting makes sense then. --Fig bucket 22:37, 5 March 2010 (UTC)
    • And for archival reference (copy entire table code pipe it through the below, manually insert header): --Fig bucket 22:48, 5 March 2010 (UTC)
 awk 'BEGIN {foo=3;} /^\|\[\[[a-z'"'"'A-Z0-9-: ]*\]\]/ {foo=0; x=$0; gsub(/ /,"",x); len=(length(x)-5);} {print $0; if (foo<2) {foo++; } else if (foo==2) {print "|" len; foo=3;}}'
