Ultimate Buh? This is new. I checked the main website, this is genuine. Its a minor change to the Maguffin quest--Tombot 20:02, 15 December 2010 (UTC)

The big question is gonna be "What else can you use this for?" It's a quest item, but there doesn't seem to be a limit to how many you can get. Seems just a bit too much work just to add an extra step. Is it 100% drop like the charrrm was? Is it 100% success rate to get a charrrm from using it? Can it be pickpocketed or is it a "conditional" drop? A number of questions are going to pop up.--Fluxxdog 20:58, 15 December 2010 (UTC)

  • Update: It's a conditional drop.--Fluxxdog 21:09, 15 December 2010 (UTC)
    • is it talisman or, more likely, "talisman or two charrrms already"? --Evilkolbot 21:49, 15 December 2010 (UTC)
      • I've a character that's had a talisman for ages and he is getting all the keys he wants. Only used one of them, though, and did not get a charm. --Flargen 22:16, 15 December 2010 (UTC)
  • Duh, just realized since it was discovered to be a conditional drop, it's also not a 100% drop :p This may mean it's just there to slow down the quest rate. Maybe remove a hidden delay() in the gaudy pirate? But if that's the cae, why not just change the drop rate of the charrrm?--Fluxxdog 00:23, 16 December 2010 (UTC)
    • Jick says it is a Crimbo-related change. --Fig bucket 00:29, 16 December 2010 (UTC)
    • No, it's a 100% drop. It'll drop when you've over -100% items. The condition is probably just "no pickpocket". --Flargen 00:59, 16 December 2010 (UTC)
      • If it's a 100% drop, it's only before you get the Talisman. I've killed about 26 gaudy pirates running +260% item drops with no drops. The account has broken the prism.--Toffile 01:56, 16 December 2010 (UTC)
        • I think they might have suddenly changed it after realizing there was supposed to be a limit on the drops. To never dropping once you the talisman/2 charms, probably. --Flargen 02:22, 16 December 2010 (UTC)

I'm guessing that this doesn't work if you haven't unlocked Belowdecks. As in, if you got it through a faxed gaudy pirate. --Groli 13:37, 16 December 2010 (UTC)

  • Now that Crimbo is mostly over, it's time to test this. Though it is quite a lot of work to safeguard a quest step. Race ya!--Fluxxdog 14:20, 27 December 2010 (UTC)

Key Change Explanation

from the forums, a certain Oakianus suggested that you need to have A: access to belowdecks, and B: the fledges/outfit on to get there. this prevents the fax machine completely killing the need to do the pirate quest. so, nothing new if you play by the rules. --The ErosionSeeker 23:56, 27 December 2010 (UTC)

  • I don't know the exact requirement, but that is the exact reason. You'd save a TON of turns by being able to skip the pirates completely, since the only crucial reason for any aspect of pirates is the talisman. They made the fledges a quest item for the same reason. --Flargen 01:19, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
    • If they wanted to stop faxing, they could just have easily prevented the snakehead charrrms from dropping from copied Gaudy Pirates instead of making a new Quest Item that couldn't drop from copies - or just made the Gaudy Pirates camera shy like many other critters. Or a blanket ban on Quest Items dropping from copies, if such doesn't currently exist.--Gumog 14:53, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
      • Jick prefers for there to be a narrative reason if he can find one. He didn't find a nice one for filthworms, but he did with the gaudy pirate. --Flargen 15:17, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
  • I just tested this, and it's enough to have the fledges in your inventory, you don't need to have them equipped. --Capitol 15:48, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
    • I changed the wording a bit. In order to even get the charrrm, you need access to Belowdecks, which means a character must have a set of fledges. In addition, there's definitely a third message involved...something about not knowing where the chest the gaudy key opens is. It doesn't consume the key. I forgot to copy the exact message before I unlocked the Belowdecks.--Toffile 04:42, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
    • With fledges and swashbuckling outfit in inventory (not equipped) and belowdecks open, I got this message using a key: "You're pretty sure this thing unlocks a gaudy box, but you're not exactly sure where to find a gaudy box right now." - then equipped fledges, and it worked fine. So the current text isn't correct.--Antimarty 02:11, 28 January 2013 (CET)

December 2018 changes

Does not drop anymore. Killed 10 gaudy pirates, nothing. But the Copperhead bros way for getting snakehead charrrms still works.
