- People (particularly those in alchemical professions) used to hold the notion that salamanders are inextricably linked to fire--for example, that they are commonly found on and in volcanoes, that they may appear spontaneously in fires, or that wearing clothing made from their skin would keep heat from harming its wearer. Or, presumably, that eating their spleens causes one to breathe fire...?
- Salamanders live in dry dark places, like old hollow trees or logs. Their habitat happens to be ideal of the purposes of fire creation, which has led to them being thought of as fire elementals as they run from their burning home.
- A hot plate held above pastry to broil or brown just the top of it is called a salamander. It's also an archaic name for a fireplace poker, and a folklore name for a lick of flame that (briefly) detaches from the main body of a fire.
