Rollover
It's tough work being the computers that run the Kingdom of Loathing. Even computers deserve a break once in a while, so every night, at about X:30 PM (your time), we have what we like to call nightly maintenance, or as the community calls it, "rollover."
During this time, the servers do important things like clean up around the Kingdom, give you more adventures, empty your stomachs and sober you up, and other important tasks that prepare the Kingdom for another day of adventuring. In order to make sure these tasks go as quickly and as smoothly as possible, the game kicks everyone off and doesn't allow anyone to log on. This sucks, we know, but it's for the good of the game. Think of it as a good time to take a break.
How long does rollover take? Unfortunately, due to the chaotic nature of reality, the phase of the moon, and other uncontrollable factors, we can't really say for sure. We aim for about 10 minutes of downtime a day, but occasionally things will go longer (or shorter!) than that. We'll try to notify everyone if we know that one nightly maintenance session will be longer than normal.
But, wait; there's more! On Saturday night (at least, on Saturday night here in sunny Arizona), we have an extended rollover. This long rollover can take up to 40 minutes in some situations. Having a long rollover once a week helps reduce the time rollover takes on the other days of the week, which is a good thing.
As rollover approaches, warning messages are issued by chat system messages 15, 10, 5, and 1 minute(s) prior to rollover. Additionally, a warning appears in the character pane showing the time until rollover. At any time during the day, the Options page will show how long until rollover, as will typing /rollover in chat. If you are still logged in when rollover arrives, you will be kicked out of the Kingdom and will need to log back in after rollover is over.
The following will be displayed if one tries to access the site during rollover:

During rollover, a number of changes occur. These changes include direct character changes, changes to character counters and daily limits, changes in the Kingdom, and other changes. Additionally, the entire database is backed up to prevent another occurrence of White Wednesday.
Direct Character Changes
- Any character currently in combat is given a free runaway. Unlike most free runaways, this will not increment familiar usage counters and can therefore be used to salvage a 100% familiar run.
- Forty adventures are added to each character, plus any applicable bonuses.
- The character is given extra adventures based on their campground furnishings, Clan Rumpus Room furniture, and certain equipment worn at rollover.
- See Maximizing Rollover Adventures for getting the most possible.
- A special holiday may add adventures at this point.
- The character's available adventures, if over 200, are reduced to 200.
- If a player possesses the Straight-Edgy effect, from the temporary X tattoos, the effect will be removed, and the player will gain adventures equal to 4.5 times their unused drunkenness.
- This effect is unique in that it bypasses the above adventure cap of 200.
- The character gains HP and MP based on their campground housing and furnishings. (No housing or furnishings whatsoever = No gain.)
- If the character used a bottle of goofballs the previous day and the Hopped Up on Goofballs effect has worn off, they gain 10 adventures of Goofball Withdrawal.
- Characters with the effect Thanksgetting will have it removed and replaced with the same number of adventures of the effect Thanksgot.
- Characters with an installed Source Terminal may get 50-200 turns of an assigned Enquiry effect.
- Characters with the effect You Pray To Yeg Your Soul To Keep will have it removed and replaced with the 66 adventures of the effect Yeg's Keeping.
- The effect Beaten Up is removed for each character.
