• The description of this item is taken from the 1983 song "99 Red Balloons" ("99 Luftballons"), available in English and German by the German band Nena. This song was first covered by the punk rock band 7 Seconds and also later covered by Goldfinger. The English version starts, "You and I in a little toy shop / buy a bag of balloons with the money we've got." There were 99 red balloons in the bag. However, the original German lyrics made no mention of a color; there were simply 99 balloons.
• The 99 multi-use message also references the "99 Red Balloons" lyrics.
• This may also be a reference to the phrase "the balloon's gone up," which means that a significant event has taken place (e.g., "The balloon's gone up - they've invaded Poland!").
