Ook the Mook

You wander into a nearby cave, and find a caveman with his brow furrowed in concentration (and he gets quite some furrowing, with a brow like that).

He's playing with some rocks and sticks. First he puts a rock on top of a stick. It falls off, so he puts the stick on top of the rock. This works, and he seems very pleased with himself.

"What are you doing?" you ask him.

"I invent!" he says proudly, looking up at you. "I Ook! I great inventor!"

"Oh really? What have you invented?"

"I invent word 'inventor'!"

"I... see."

Ask him about the password

"Do you know anything about Cavedan's password?" you ask him.

"Yes!" he says proudly. "I invent password! Is thing you say to get in place! Keep out people who not know, like cave bear!"

"Nice one," you say. "How about telling me what the password actually is?"

Ook frowns at you. "Me think you not understand concept very well."

Offer to trade him something

"All right," you say, "how about we trade? If you tell me the password, I'll show you something new to invent."

"Hmmm," he says, thinking hard. "...Okay. What you got?"

Teach him the secret of fire

"Well, here's a pretty good one," you say. "Give me those two sticks."

You take the sticks, rub them together a little, and then light them with your cigarette lighter. "What do you think?" you ask.

Ook shrugs. "That just fire, we got that already." He holds up a bowl of little white things. "Got marshmallow too."

"Hmph," you say. "Well, give me a minute. I'll think of something."

You wander back out of the cave, grumbling.

After teaching him fire:

Teach him the secret of paper

You get some leaves and sticks, and pound them into mulch, which you then press between some large flat rocks. Eventually you end up with some simple paper.

"This is called 'paper'," you tell Ook. "You can use it to write things on!"

Ook gestures at the wall behind him, which is covered with rudimentary mechanical diagrams. "Like that?"

"Well, yeah, but it's much more portable."

He shrugs. "Okay, is decent, I guess. Not good enough for password though."

"Hmph," you say. "Well, give me a minute. I'll think of something."

You wander back out of the cave, grumbling.

Teach him the secret of scissors

You find some flat shards of obsidian, which you chip into blades and insert into wooden handles, connected together in an X shape with a wooden peg in the middle.

Working the handles in and out, you demonstrate their cutting ability to Ook. "See? We call them 'scissors'."

Ook seems puzzled. "Why not use knife?"

"Er..."

"I not see point. Not trade password for that!"

"Hmph," you say. "Well, give me a minute. I'll think of something."

You wander back out of the cave, grumbling.

Suggest a game of chance

"Okay," you say, "How about we play a game, and if I win, you tell me the password?"

"Ooh! That good! I like game," he says, grinning. "I invent game!"

"Did you? What's it called?"

"It called 'Rock <Paper/rock> <Scissors/rock>'. Is real easy! We go 'rock <paper/rock> <scissors/rock> shoot' and then you put out hand. Ready?"

You sigh.

"Ok, here go! Rock <paper/rock> <scissors/rock> shoot!"

Rock
Paper
Scissors

Tie:

You both throw '<rock/paper/scissors>', not unexpectedly.

"We tie!" Ook says. "We go again!"

Ugh, fine.

(Repeats game.)

No thanks.

"Uh, no, that's okay. I'll see you around later," you say as you leave, "Good game, though."

"Next I invent 'points'," Ook nods excitedly.

Loss:

You throw <rock/paper/scissors>, and Ook throws <rock/paper/scissors>.

"Hah!" he exclaims. "<Win message>! No password for you!"

Grumbling, you leave the cave.

Win:

You throw <rock/paper/scissors>, and Ook throws <rock/paper/scissors>.

"Aw," he says. "<Win message>. Okay, I tell you password. It 'swordfish'."

"Of course it is," you say.

"Play again?" he asks hopefully.

"Thanks, but maybe later. I have to go talk to a guy."

You exit the cave with a wave.

Suggest a riddle contest

"Okay, I'll tell you what," you say. "How about you ask me a riddle, and if I get it right, you tell me the password?"

"What a riddle?" he asks.

"Well, it's where you think of something, and tell me about it in an obscure way, and I try to guess what you're thinking of."

He sort of squints at you, thinking hard. "So, like... 'thing I cannot eat, teeth break, what up with that?'"

"Rrright. Except that one's maybe a bit too obvious. It's a rock."

"No."

"What?"

"Not rock," Ook says, apparently having just invented smugness. "You lose, ha ha! Is boulder!"

"That's the same thing," you protest.

"Not same at all! Boulder much bigger!"

"Ugh, fine," you mutter, as you stalk out of the cave, annoyed.

"Me Ook!" he calls after you. "Ugh is cousin!"

Leave him alone

"Okay, good luck with your inventing," you say, waving as you leave. He sort of waves back at you, but seems a little puzzled by the gesture, since it hasn't been invented yet.

Leave him to his inventing

"Okay, good luck with your inventing," you say, waving as you leave. He sort of waves back at you, but seems a little puzzled by the gesture, since it hasn't been invented yet.

Occurs at The Cave Before Time

Notes

  • You can teach scissors and paper after playing a game of chance with him.
  • The option to teach fire will always be available.
  • The game of chance will always result in a tie if only rock is available (for obvious reasons). If you teach only one hand, the game always results in either a tie or a loss.
  • Gives the following win messages based on who threw what:
    • Rock wins: Rock smash scissors
    • Paper wins: Paper cover rock
    • Scissor wins: Scissors cut paper
