Introduction
The moderators are appointed by the Administration to keep control of their designated realm. Moderators are present in the chat and on the forums. They are all volunteers, though the majority of the paid staff have at least some moderation power as well.
It is an oft repeated truism that the best way to never become a moderator is to ask for the job, though on occasion this rule can become blurred. Traditionally Jick and Mr Skullhead chose all the moderators, with Mr Skullhead leading them, though more recently Aelfrhian has been given administrative powers in the forums, whilst Werebear acts as a lead moderator for the chat team.
Generally, moderator powers in one medium precludes power in the other, though in times of emergency (such as the infamous EHOWA forum attack, during which obscene and scatological images were spammed) moderators can be drafted to help the other medium.
The first forum moderators were the famous whitehats and fonts of wisdom Pimonkey and Inconnu. The original chat moderators were TheGreatYak, Elven_Princess, Werebear, Lacey, Kabuki, Lady Arryn, and Fruity Vuish.
Chat Mods
General Information
The chat moderators must uphold the Policies of Loathing and generally keep the peace in chat. The only non-moderated channels are Clan, Dread, Hobopolis, Slimetube, Lounge, Harem, Mod, Dev and Talkie. Moderation varies according to the remit of the channel: for example, Haiku is moderated strictly to ensure that the poetic spirit is kept at all times. The effect moderation can have on a channel is perhaps best shown by the growth of the PvP channel, which Marshall took an active hand in moderating and molding from the start.
The chat mods have the power to ban players and send out green and red warnings and announcements.

Other Information
All moderators have access to the /mod chat channel and Moderator forum, in order to best organize themselves. In addition, there is a trashbin forum, known as The Pit of Despair, which forum mods can move threads to instead of outright deleting them.
Forum Moderators
General Information
Unlike chat, in which each moderator has power in every channel, each sub-forum has a specific set of moderators, usually drawn from the regulars of that board. Further, unlike chat, each sub-forum has its own set of rules and standards, which can be wildly different. For example, what will pass in The Ring of Flame would probably never survive in Gameplay. Forum moderators can delete and edit any post in their forums as well as split one thread into two. They also ensure that users do not break rules regarding avatars or signatures.
As of January 2006, there is a group known as Ring Wraiths that aid the moderation of The Ring of Flame. Though they do not have mod power, they rotate in control of two usergroups. In order to post a new thread in the Ring, you must first be a member of one or other usergroup. If thread posting is then abused, the spammer is removed from the group.

Previous Forum Moderators
Giboc and Spikey used to moderate the original Random Ramblings (which did not exist for a time, before being returned after requests from several forumers, including Carnifex). Philanthropist used to moderate Contests. TheBub used to moderate The Ring of Flame. For quite a time Lacey had moderator power in much of the forum, under the name Carter, as well as chat powers. Thisguy, Alecat and Scyld succumbed to the lure of chat moderation. tubby, darionlar and megrimlock once moderated Kingdom Gameplay-Discussion. darionlar and Aardvark once moderated Kingdom Community. Cynn once moderated The Lair of the Pretentious Artists. TechSmurf and Betrayer once moderated Contests. tubby and darionlar once moderated General Asymmetry. Betrayer once moderated Random Ramblings. Stargazer67 once moderated Kingdom Gameplay-Discussion and Community.
