References

  • This familiar is a reference to Igor, the hunchbacked minion traditionally associated with the various film versions of Frankenstein.
  • Abby-Normal from the haiku is a reference to the movie Young Frankenstein, where Igor (pronounced "Eye-gor") uses a brain marked "abnormal" for the new monster, and claims he thought it was from a person named "Abby Normal".
  • The message where the familiar sneaks up behind you and scares you is also from Young Frankenstein.
  • Faithful Handyman from the haiku is a reference to the 1975 cult musical Rocky Horror Picture Show. The lyrics to the song "Sweet Transvestite", sung by Tim Curry (as the character Dr. Frank-N-Further) start with "How d'you do, / I see you've met my / faithful handyman," referring to his hunchbacked alien manservant.
  • This also references the Discworld novels by Terry Pratchett, in which there is an entire race consisting of people quite similar to this familiar, all named Igor. They are master surgeons and share the same speech mannerism (replacing "s" with "th"). The comments about "hav[ing] [hith] father'th eyeth," references the reuse of organs and appendages among Igors in Discworld.
  • "Whistling a Cheerful Tune" could be a reference to "Whistling a Happy Tune" from The King and I.
  • "Damn your eyes!" is a line from a song titled "Sam Hall". The exchange, "Damn your eyes!" "Too Late!" is also a quote from the movie Young Frankenstein, spoken by Gene Wilder & Marty Feldman, with Feldman pointing to his trademark bulging eyes.
