That shack you saw on the main map was just a picture of a shack drawn on the ground.
Divergences
- Your adventure begins with Hat Trick!.
- Enemies have hats with various abilities:
- Monsters have a hat or stack of hats placed on their image, with their name modified accordingly.
- The stronger the enemy, the more hats they have. They also can wear multiples of the same hat.
- The effects of wearing multiples of the same hat stack.
- The number of hats worn by the monster is floor(1+base monster attack/25), up to a maximum of 11 hats. Bonus Monster Level and monster stat variance do not affect the number of hats.
- Scaling Monsters will only wear 1 hat.
- The enemies can drop some of the hats they were wearing.
- Each visible hat appears to have a 10% chance to drop at the end of combat, unaffected by Item drop bonuses and Yellow Ray mechanics.

- You can't remove a hat once it's on your head.
- Equipment that disappears at rollover will still disappear as normal.
- All of your hats are unequipped upon breaking the prism.

Strategy
General
- The strategy for Hat Trick is more or less the same as a Standard non-Challenge path run.
- The imposing pilgrim's hat on an enemy lets the enemy interrupt your action, so pay attention when doing some combat-reliant quests.
- Also, the imposing pilgrim's hat is a hat you should delay or skip wearing, as it gives -20 to Monster Level and there's no taking it off once it's on.
- The crown of thorns could also be skipped if its passive damage would interrupt your strategy (i.e. wall-killing the Wall of Bones)
- Equipping sleep mask is typically not recommended ever anyways, but doing seems to make the Junkyard Quest impossible (Testing done with Peridot of Peril to force correct encounters).
Astral gear and consumables
Moon Sign
IotM / IotY
- The prismatic beret is able to reach colors and high power levels unavailable in other paths, with Beret Busking able to give you large amounts of buffs per cast.
- For once, you can wear the Apriling band helmet during the Nuns quest.
- The toy Cupid bow is able to snag the path hats from monsters after battle.
- You could try to get the tin foil hat before swishing the Mmm-brr! brand mouthwash (Your Sept-Ember Censer), but depending on what else you have it's probably not necessary.
Rewards
- Finishing a run while it is the current special challenge path -- between May 15th, 2025 and August 14th, 2025 -- gives players 50 (in Normal) or 100 (in Hardcore) extra karma points the next time they visit Valhalla.
- Players will receive a Thwaitgold mad hatterpillar statuette upon defeating the final boss.
- Equipping 100 hats at once makes you eligible for the Mad Hattest trophy.
Notes
- The tin foil hat and construction hardhat set monster resistances to 20% per hat, which can result in monsters, which are naturally resistant to physical or elemental damage, having lower resistances than they would normally.
- Using the "Outfits" selector on the Equipment page may not work, because it will not manually put on a hat. However, once you have manually donned an outfit's hat, you will be able to use the Outfits selector to change to it.
