Combat Messages
  • At the start of combat, if Ode to Booze is active:
<name> hums a snatch of Ode to Booze and hiccoughs loudly.
  • During combat, if Ode to Booze is active:
<name> sumgers sideways, trips over his own feet, and crashes to the ground, higgulping.
(The familiar fails to react to skill use when affected by Ode)
  • Upon running away with Ode to Booze active, if the Bandersnatch can provide a free escape:
<name> snatches you up in his jaws, tosses you onto his back, and flooms away, weaving slightly and hiccelping fire. You shout "Yeeeeeah!" as the combat becomes a small dot, far below you.
    (No adventure loss)
  • Upon running away with Ode to Booze active, if the Bandersnatch is out of free escapes:
<name> slumsily tosses you onto his back, but he's waggerving so much that you fall off pretty quickly. You escape the fight, but just barely. It's just as well, though. Your butt is getting pretty sore.
    (An adventure is used)
  • Enthroned in the Crown of Thrones:
    <name> groars and leamps into the frattle, doing a painbow of 2-4 (+2-4) (+2-4) (+2-4) (+2-4) (+2-4) damage.

<name> lumps out of the Buddy Bjorn and does 2-4 (+2-4) (+2-4) (+2-4) (+2-4) (+2-4) paimage to your opponent with a hugendous assack.
  • At the end of combat:
    • Normally
<name> greams happily, baring a mouthful of scarpy teeth.
    • With aquaviolet jub-jub bird equipped:
<name> smaughs happily while the jub-jub bird makes a mystic hand gesture at you. Okay, well, more of a wing gesture.
    • With charpuce jub-jub bird equipped:
<name> bares his frightious teeth in a broad grile, while the jub-jub bird gives you a feathery thumbs-up.
    • With crimsilion jub-jub bird equipped:
<name> smims beamishly, while the jub-jub bird flexes its wings like a little bird bodybuilder. Birdybuilder?
    • With lucky Tam O'Shanter equipped:
<name> outgrabes beneath the Tam O'Shanter.
    • With miniature gravy-covered maypole equipped:
<name> goes whiffling around the Maypole, burbling as he comes.

Notes

  • If the player starts combat with Ode to Booze active, the familiar can provide a free run-away, escaping combat without using an adventure. It can provide this function a limited number of times per day up to the Bandersnatch's weight / 5. Whether any free run-aways are available depends on the familiar's buffed weight during the current combat. (So underwater-only weight buffs will indeed give you extra run-aways.)
    • This free-run functionality is determined by a flag set by a start-of-combat message. Monster Changing effects (such as CLEESH) will unfortunately reset this flag, removing the possibility of a bander-assisted free run that fight. Logging out/in will similarly reset this flag.
    • The free runaways provided by the Bandersnatch share the same "Familiar-aided Runaways" counter that tracks the Pair of Stomping Boots' free run-aways.
  • Each bird color tunes the player's end-of-combat stat gains to a specific stat. This means that all substats gained from the familiar will correspond to that stat.
  • Smust stuns the enemy for 2 rounds and this message is displayed:
Your opponent can't see you through the cloud of smust.
  • After two rounds it clears:
The cloud of smust around your opponent clears.
  • Smust can only fire once per combat. All subsequent uses of smust-triggering skills will result in the Bandersnatch causing physical damage.
  • Damage done by the Bandersnatch varies between X/2 and X, where X is the Bandersnatch's weight.
  • HP restored by the Bandersnatch varies between X/2 and X, where X is the Bandersnatch's weight.
  • Deleveling done by the Bandersnatch varies between X/4 and X/2, where X is the Bandersnatch's weight.
  • Combat skills that increase familiar experience can be used multiple times in a fight to massively boost familiar experience.
  • Smust-triggering skills do not actually have to hit the monster in order to trigger smust.
  • There exists a stuffed version of this familiar.

History

  • On November 14, 2013 new interactions were introduced for the guild skills added during the class revamps. Further, some existing interactions changed:
    • The message for Stuffed Mortar Shell was:
<name> slavernously snorfs up some of the shrapnel, and looks heavier.
    • The action for Weapon of the Pastalord previously restored 12 MP.
    • The action for Wave of Sauce previously gave +2 familiar experience (instead of the current +1).

References

  • This familiar is a reference to the fictional monster mentioned in Lewis Carroll's poem "Jabberwocky" which appeared in his novel Through the Looking-Glass. The prevalence of invented portmanteau words in the combat messages is similar to the use of language in the poem. The jubjub bird is another fictional monster from "Jabberwocky," thus the familiar equipments. "Frabjous" is another of Carroll's made-up words.
  • The line "its vision, like a prostitute's, is based on movement," is a reference to a joke from Family Guy, which in turn references Jurassic Park.
  • The Disco Dance II message about making "dancing a little less safe" is a reference to "The Safety Dance."
  • The Bandersnatch's flight, and response to the flight, is a reference to The Neverending Story.
  • While a great many of the words in this familiars messages are portmanteaus, e.g. "higgulping" and "hiccelping", "hiccough" is just the way the British spell "hiccup".
