- Some hit/miss messages refers to the 80's song "Rock the Casbah" by The Clash.
- The critical message refers to the film Rocky III and its anthem, Survivor's hit "Eye of the Tiger".
- The miss message in which it howls "Adrienne!" is also a reference to the Rocky films. Though, in the movies, the character's name is spelled "Adrian".
- One of the miss messages is a reference to "We Want a Rock" by They Might Be Giants, which contains the lyric "everybody wants a rock to wind a piece of string around".
- One miss message refers to the song "I Am a Rock," made famous by Simon and Garfunkel.
- The name Clod hopper could refer either to the candy Clodhoppers, which are vanilla fudge graham wafers, or to type of heavy shoe of the same name.
- The hit message "It throws a clod of dirt at you, Claude. By the way, happy birthday!" refers to the unlit birthday cake from the Baker Quest and to Happy Birthday, Claude! cake.
