These items give you the ability to combine items in your inventory in ways that you could not if you did not have said crafting item. If a crafting item is present in your inventory (or if you have a campground analogue), an additional link will appear at the top of the inventory page that will allow you to perform the specialized combining (smithing, cooking, cocktailcrafting, etc) that is now enabled.
