Catacombs Machinery

The main -- indeed, only -- feature of this large cavern chamber is two large stone blocks, hanging from chains near the rear wall. The blocks rest on two stone shelves that project from the face of the wall high above your head. Above the blocks, each chain is fastened to the wall with what looks like some sort of mechanical clamp.

The block on the right rests on a stone shelf that projects from the face of the wall high above your head. The block on the left is not resting on anything, but nevertheless is at the same height as its twin. Above the blocks, the right chain is fastened to the wall with what looks like some sort of mechanical clamp. The left chain has a similar clamp, but it is open and the block swings freely.

  • After pulling the lever at the Northern Gate with both blocks in place:

  • After successfully pondering the weights in this chamber:

The main -- indeed, only -- feature of this large cavern chamber is two large stone blocks, which used to be hanging from chains, until the chains broke and the weights crashed to the floor, very very loudly.

Ponder the weights

Krakrox regarded the stone blocks for a moment. They seemed to be part of some sort of counterweight system. If he had some way to reach them, he mused, it might be worth it to manipulate them somehow. Since he didn't, though, he had no choice but to leave them alone.

Krakrox regarded the stone blocks for a moment. They seemed to be part of some sort of counterweight system. If he had a reason for doing so, he thought he could probably reach one of them with his grappling hook. However, he couldn't think of any such reason.

Krakrox regarded the stone blocks for a moment. Based on what he felt his relative location was underground, they seemed to be part of some sort of counterweight system for controlling the iron gate in the city above. If the levers on the gate had been responsible for the clamps holding the chains, then the right-hand chain would be impossible to free, because its corresponding lever above was broken and missing. Therefore, some sort of intervention was called for.

You uncoil your rope and swing the grappling hook around a few times before throwing it at the stone block on the right. It sails in a graceful arc and catches on the chains wrapped around the block. Standing as far back as possible, you haul on the rope with all your might.

The clamp strained against the force of Krakrox's powerful arms, then finally relented, snapping free of its moorings on the rocky wall. There was a brief pause, and then a repetitive clanking filled the room as the two weights began to slowly lower to the floor on their respective chains. Krakrox smirked, pleased with himself... then cocked an eyebrow. There was a new noise, a sort of groaning noise.

Suddenly, the right-hand chain snaps, sending its counterweight crashing to the floor. The left weight quickly slows to a stop and then begins to rise, but the groaning sound continues, and abruptly, the left chain snaps as well. The remains of both chains whip into the ceiling like frightened snakes as the second block smashes into the ground, echoing a metallic crash from far above.

It took several minutes before the rumbling and reverberations ceased, and Krakrox felt assured that the cavern was not going to collapse on top of him.

Your head spinning and ears ringing, you make your way out of the city, just in case there's a delayed reaction on the catacombs caving in.

Leave the City

Poking around in an abandoned ruin was starting to grate on Krakrox's nerves. He was a man of action, ill-suited to scavenger hunts and puzzley nonsense.

You decide to return to the jungle and find something to kill instead.
