References

  • The "black spot" be a fictional device in the 1883 pirate-y novel Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. When a pirate hands the black spot to someone it means that he has been marked for death. The black spot has since appeared in many other fictional works involving pirates or death or both.
  • The word "savvy" in the combat message is a reference to Jack Sparrow, as it is one of his more famous speech quirks.
