BIG! is the Summer 2013 special challenge path, introduced on May 15, 2013. This path adds variant rules and restrictions to an ascension run. Its description in The Bureau of Reincarnation reads "You begin the game much larger (level 15), but all of the monsters are larger too!"

Restrictions

  • "Free" runaways (from any source, including familiars, equipment, and combat items) will always fail; they become regular runaways that cost an Adventure. This includes banishers that normally don't cost a turn (like divine champagne poppers, or cocktail napkins on clingy pirates). Runaways give this message:
Unfortunately, you're too Big to get away particularly quickly. It's less "running" away than "lumbering" away.
  • You cannot drop the BIG! path immediately (much like Avatar of Boris). Trying to do so yields the following message:
When you start out Big you have to stay Big for at least a couple of days.
    • Dropping is possible on the third day. Dropping the BIG! path subtracts 40000 substats from your main stat, and 22500 substats from each offstat (effectively removing your starting bonus). Current quests remain available.
  • Holidays
    • During the Feast of Boris, you will still encounter the assorted FoB wandering monsters. However, you will be unable to eat the foods they drop, and you do not gain the extra stomach capacity the holiday would normally grant. Furthermore, the normal holiday text on the front page is replaced with the following:
Today is the Feast of Boris!
All this holiday food is too small for your taste.

Divergences

  • You start off at level 15, with 200 points in your mainstat and 150 in each offstat. (For example, a Seal Clubber will start with 200 Muscle, 150 Mysticality, and 150 Moxie.)
  • Upon reincarnation, you will encounter It's Kind of a Big Deal. If you are in Hardcore, this adventure yields big pants; Normal ascensions will receive nothing.
  • All monsters in the game are tougher; they have 150 additional attack, defense, and HP. However, the attack and defense are capped at 300 after this bonus is applied, but before +ML is applied.
    • This is not the same as +150 Monster Level; your Combat Initiative will remain the same, Oil Peak and The Slime Tube will be unaffected, and other special interactions with +ML will not be triggered.
    • The 150 bonus attack does count for flyering.
    • Scaling monsters are unaffected, and will scale to your stats as normal. For instance, the monsters in the Hidden Temple all scale but are capped well below 150 attack and defense (besides the clan of cave bars); this cap remains unchanged during this path. Your shadow is also unaffected, and has 395 HP as usual.
  • The Big Wisniewski and The Man have 300 attack and defense, and 2150 HP.
  • The wall of skin has 200 HP, making it much more difficult to beat without the beehive
  • The Naughty Sorceress has 300 attack and defense, 550 HP in form 1, and 750 HP in form 2.

Strategy

See BIG!/Strategy.

Notes

  • Monsters in Fear Man's Level still receive their +150 stats even though you're reduced to 30/30/10 stats.
  • You receive your stainless steel equipment as usual after completing a Hardcore ascension.
  • Hardcore players retain their big pants after prism-break (unlike Jarlsberg's hat for instance).

Rewards

  • Players will receive a Thwaitgold Goliath beetle statuette upon defeating the Naughty Sorceress.
    • However, you do not receive an Instant Karma unless you are level 13, just like everyone else.
  • After breaking the prism, all monsters return to their normal stats.
    • You maintain your power, though.
