Combat Messages
  • At the end of combat:
    • <name> looks for some extra items and meat, claiming it's his fee for the psychoanalysis he did of the monster while you were fighting.
    • <name> says, "It would appear your foe had an unhealthy obsession with material goods. Let us endeavor to help him rid himself of that obsession."
    • <name> says, "the little dance that I am doing is symbolic of my sublimated desire for material goods," and winks at you.
    • <name> says, "this creature clearly has an unhealthy obsession with material things."
    • <name> says, "winking and dancing are primal, universal symbols for acquiring meat and items, respectively."
    • <name> says, "the uncontrollable urge to dance is evidence of repressed sexual longing," and does a little soft-shoe.
    • <name> says, "as this monster has no meat, I shall collect my fee for psychoanalysis in material goods."
    • <name> says, "the urge to dance demonstrates repressed feelings of inadequacy about one's psychoanalytical abilities," and does a little dance.
    • <name> says, "winking of the eyelids and dancing are both indicative of a repressed desire--a desire for material gain."
    • <name> says, "dancing is an expression of several base human urges, sublimated into a more socially acceptable form of expression," as he does a few pirouettes.
  • When dropping a jar:
    • <name> looks at you, raises an eyebrow, and says "Wait. Why am I doing all the work? Take this, and try to pick up some of the slack, would you?"

Notes

  • The psychoanalytic jar drops after 30 combats with the familiar. Additional combats after that increment the counter, which can result in a first-turn jar the next day if the counter is high enough.
  • No more than one psychoanalytic jar can be produced per day, unless you ascend.

References

  • This familiar is a huge reference to psychologist Carl Jung (surname pronounced a lot like young), who worked with Sigmund Freud at the start of his career but then diverged. Jung was interested in the unconscious mind, including what he called the collective unconscious. Jung kept years of his notes in a red-leather-bound (or crimson-leather-bound) book that is now called the Little Crimson Book.
  • The familiar's name may be a reference to the song "Angry Young Man" by Billy Joel, or to the song "Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)" by Styx.
  • Dancing and winking are in-game Common Metaphors.
  • Probably also a reference to Tiny Carl Jung, a recurring character in the webcomic Dresden Codak.
