Ancient Temple
Ancient Temple

Krakrox regarded the ancient temple, overgrown with vines and weathered with age. Considering the trouble he went through to get into the place, there was hopefully some good loot to be found. Usually the priests of ancient temples seemed to have a magpie's eye for interior decorating -- gold leaf and gemstones covering every object of even the slightest religious significance. And in a temple, that's most objects. Still, there was always the chance that the place had already been scavenged, or that the culture that had built it had preferred the scrimshawed teeth of their ancestors to jewels. At the very least, though, there would be some interesting traps to evade, or some more of those mystical stone guardians to fight, so even if the loot was poor, he'd get some entertainment out of the deal.

Enter the Temple

Krakrox strode into the temple, keeping a wary eye out for traps. After traversing the twisting hallways for a short time, he discovered, to his annoyance, that the ever-present glowing moss that had illuminated his way through the various local caves and caverns was not present here. The main tip-off was that he was unable to see anything.

Grumbling, you retrace your steps out of the temple.

Ancient Temple

Krakrox regarded the ancient temple with a shudder. The icon he had seen on the door, of an evil-looking eye sprouting wiggling tentacles, did not sit well with him. In his experience, the people who would worship that kind of thing were not good people. There was also the matter of the very geometry of the temple, which seemed to be making a subtle attempt to twist away from him, in a direction his eyes could not follow. There was a tangible power here -- the cult he was dealing with was obviously not a new one, but merely the resurgence of a group that had existed longer than anyone could guess. But, why were they appearing now, and what was the connection to the plague? Was the god or demon that these people worshiped attempting to break through into our reality? Had it perhaps attempted previously, when the temple was originally constructed ages ago, and had for some reason failed, and been forced to wait until the stars were once again aligned? Was the plague perhaps indicative of the first forays of its black tendrils onto our plane, the first collecting of victims to fuel its growing power? Based on Krakrox's past experience with such things, he knew the answer to all these questions was "yes, probably".

All in all, it was a bad scene.

Enter the Temple

Krakrox stepped cautiously into the temple, keeping an eye out for cultists and traps. Unfortunately, this soon became impossible, as the temple interior was not lit, and it quickly became impossible to see anything at all. This made the barbarian much more uncomfortable than he would have been willing to admit; Krakrox was afraid of no man or beast, but this place was undoubtedly infested with things that were neither. He decided to make a tactical retreat, and leave the temple. Just because he was a mighty and headstrong barbarian warrior, it didn't mean he was a fool.
