Ironically, it is the worthless trinket (also gewgaw and knick-knack) that is valuable.
Valuable trinkets used to have no use in-game beyond autosell or collecting, until the obligatory pirates started recruiting; the trinkets are now used to deter a group of chatty pirates on the F'c'le.
