Talk:Toy ray gun
From TheKolWiki
Added the Strategic Defense Iniative reference, ie Reagan's Star Wars program.--Practitioner of Saucy Arts 05:05, 7 December 2006 (CST)
- I've seen the Ronald Ray Gun joke before... --Raijinili 02:04, 8 December 2006 (CST)
- I'm not sure if that reference can be pinpointed to any single source.. It's quite common - I've seen it many times in various places; the first one I remember was from game Nuclear War (Ronny Raygun, Infidel Castro, Mao the Pun, etc.)... --Andemon 06:02, 8 December 2006 (CST)
- JunTenki recognized it. It's from the Gathering of Angels adventure. --Raijinili 19:24, 8 December 2006 (CST)
- According to wikipedia:
- Detractors sometimes referred to Reagan as "Ronald Ray-Gun," a term coined in the introduction to the song Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man sung by Joan Baez and Jeffrey Shurtleff at the 1969 Woodstock Festival.
- So I really don't think it is a ref to the Gathering of Angels thing. As such I'm removing the ref. --Starwed 09:42, 9 December 2006 (CST)
- I never claimed that the pun was ORIGINALLY from that adventure, just that it's also used there. And since, yes, the pun is still used there, I'm putting the comment back. - The Wrassedragon 08:57, 13 December 2006 (CST)
- Numerous other references and puns are used more than once in this game, but the rest don't have similar comments here - at least not the ones that I've checked so far. I'm not quite sure if that comment is worth adding; would have to add the same to tons of other pages too, to keep it uniform... --Andemon 12:14, 13 December 2006 (CST)
- Has anyone noticed that with the space helmet and astronaut pants equipped, the ray gun does a lot more damage? I was hitting maybe 20 tops with the clockwork apparatus equipped, but I switched to the helmet and astronaut pants, and I was hitting around 40-60. --Jimfromtx 20:23, 10 December 2006 (CST)
hit messages
There seems to now be some new hit messages for the toy ray gun. I don't know for sure if they go on this page so I'm sticking them on the talk page for now.
- You shoot it for x damage. You consider asking it some questions, but decide to do it later.
- You fire a "laser" at your "opponent," hitting it for x damage.
- You play a little laser tag with him, leaving a smoking hole in his chest to indicate you're no longer "it." Your opponent takes x damage.
- You indulge in a little laserblasting with your toy ray gun, waltzing around with it for a while before shooting your opponent for x damage.--DancesWithScissors 10:40, 14 December 2006 (CST)
The first Hit Message is a reference to the phrase "Shoot first, ask questions later". The second is a reference to a Austin Powers movie where Doctor Evil's plan is to use a lazer. However, he doesn't know that the terminology he is using has already been created, so he says all these "new" words in speach marks. The third is a reference to the game "lazer tag" and "tag", or "it" or "dob" or however you know the game. I'm not too sure what the last one means. --Sinister the Pink 15:36, 17 December 2006 (CST)
This references the band Shiny Toy Guns.
--TimJing 13:21, 22 December 2006 (CST)
I think the last one is referencing the movie Laserblast, which was on MST3K. --El Chupaqueso 11:31, 1 January 2007 (CST)
"You shoot it for x damage. You consider asking it some questions, but decide to do it later." - I always interpeted it as a reference to Dirty Harry.I thought the questions might have been something like "I know what you're thinking. Did he fire six shots or only five? Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement, I've kinda lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya punk?"Tuck999 17:08, 26 January 2007 (CST)
- It's a play on the old adage of "Shoot first, and ask questions later".--Toffile 17:14, 26 January 2007 (CST)
Anyone notice that the hit message for the second one isn't: You fire a "laser" at your "opponent," hitting it for x damage.
Its: You fire a "laser" at your "opponents," hitting it for x damage. --Pokekid456789 17:10, 15 March 2007 (CDT)
- You sure you wasn't fighting a plural monster? -- NitraMo SA TT 17:33, 15 March 2007 (CDT)
- Yep I'm pretty sure, I fought a Snow Queen, Knob Goblin Chef and Knob Goblin Bean Counter.--PokeYourHeadOff 16:03, 16 March 2007 (CDT)
possible reference
If I'm not mistaken, there's a band called Shiny Toy Guns, which may or may not be alluded to in the description's opening sentence: "This is a shiny plastic toy ray gun. " --TW 17:33, 19 August 2008 (CDT)
