Outfit

An outfit is a set of equipment with a common theme. Wearing an outfit can give you resistances, improve your stats, have different effects at some locations, or provide other benefits. Most costumes consist of a hat and pants and perhaps also a weapon, accessory, or shirt. Every outfit changes your avatar while being worn.

Equipping an outfit yields the following message:

You put on an Outfit: <outfit name>

If you try to equip an outfit which includes an off-hand item while wielding a 2-handed weapon, you get the following message:

You can't equip that outfit with a 2-handed weapon equipped.

If you are wearing an official outfit and attempt to re-equip it via the outfit drop-down, no change will be made to your equipment configuration:

You already have that outfit equipped!

If you've unlocked an official outfit and then no longer have all the parts, it won't appear in your drop down list. If you regain the missing parts, it reappears.

Visiting the Pretentious Artist while wearing an outfit will unlock a tattoo, provided you've recovered his missing property.

All outfits except Vile Vagrant Vestments have at least two items from these three categories:

• hat
• pants
• weapon

This fact ensures that it is impossible to wear two outfits at once--one cannot equip four items using only three equipment slots. But it is possible to wear the Vile Vagrant Vestments and the Yendorian Finery due to the fact that the outfits have a hat, a 1 handed weapon, and an accessory and the other has an off-hand, pants, and an accessory.

Also, the "unequip all" button at the bottom puts you in your birthday suit, unequipping everything except for your familiar equipment (unless you have configured the Inventory Options in the Account Menu).

Custom Outfits

You can also specify custom outfits from any set of equipment you're currently wearing. Custom outfits have no in-game benefit other than convenience. If you already have 37 custom outfits and you try to create another, you get the following message:

You don't need more than 37 custom outfits. What are you, some kind of supermodel?

If you click the Save as Custom Outfit button without having any text in the Outfit Name Box you get the following message:

Your outfit must have a first name. Whether it's O S C A R or not is your business.

If you are already wearing a defined custom outfit and try to equip it, no change will be made:

You are already wearing "<outfit name>."

If you try to equip a custom outfit with an item(s) missing, it will say:

It appears you're already wearing all the parts of the outfit "<outfit name>" which you possess or can wear.

It will also say, for each of the missing items:

Item NOT found: <item picture and name>

Also, there are certain combinations of equipment that also give an effect:

• Wearing a snake shield with a serpentine sword gives a total of +20 Monster Level
• Wearing a snarling wolf shield with a lupine sword gives a total of +18 Spooky Damage
• Wearing a cardboard katana with a cardboard wakizashi gives a total of +23 Bonus Weapon Damage

Also also, if you try to equip a custom outfit containing a Mr. Store item while in Hardcore, you will be told "This outfit contains an item which is not equippable in hardcore. Nice try, though."
