All familiars listed as Readily or Conditionally Available can be obtained by anyone, even those in hardcore ascensions.
Readily Available
These familiars are currently available to everyone, even those in hardcore ascensions, and without the need of any rare items.
Conditionally Available
These familiars are currently available to everyone, even those in hardcore ascensions, but require at least one specific condition to be fulfilled. Sign-dependent familiars require a character to be ascended at least once, because they are dependent on a specific area which only opens to one born under a specific moon sign. The Ninja Snowflake is acquired via Pickpocketing, a skill only available to Disco Bandits, Accordion Thieves and those in bird form (via Look For Shiny Objects). The Hobo Monkey and Slimeling are available only to those in certain clans, as access to Hobopolis or the Slime Tube respectively are needed to attain one.
The hatchlings of the Clockwork Grapefruit, MagiMechTech MicroMechaMech, Ninja Snowflake, Scary Death Orb, and Whirling Maple Leaf are tradeable items and may be bought in the mall if not in hardcore.

Temporarily Available
This familiar is unique because despite its availability to everyone, it is tightly related to the solution of one part of a quest (see Holy MacGuffin Quest) and vanishes until the next ascension once that part has been solved.
Limited Availability
These familiars require one or more items which no longer drop/sell and are only available for purchase in the Mall or won from The Raffle House, but for ever-increasing amounts of Meat due to the fact that as the hatchlings are bought and hatched in-game, fewer and fewer of them remain, increasing in scarcity. The hatchlings of Teddy Bear and Snowy Owl require Toymaking and are therefore only available from the mall unless Uncle Crimbo's Mobile Home shows up again. The Pet Rock is unique in being available both from Uncle Crimbo's Mobile Home and Linnea's Monster Truck. The Evil Teddy Bear may only be made in Linnea's Monster Truck in Crimbotown Right-About-Now. The Toothsome Rock is only available when Ugh Crimbo in Crimbo Rock is accessible. The hatchlings for the Wind-up Chattering Teeth and Purse Rat are gift items. They cannot be sold in the mall, but it can be traded or gift-boxed to another player, so their availability is limited, even though the number of them in game will always increase, as long as players have the ability to summon hilarious items or own a Clan VIP Lounge key, respectively. The Dreidl was only available from a small Crimbo Pressie in 2004 and is unlikely to be available again. One of the components of the NPZR is the zombie pineal gland, which only dropped for a short time during the Gray Plague in the aftermath of White Wednesday. The O.A.F. was only available from the The Traveling Trader on April Fools' Day 2007. The Pair of Ragged Claws is built from parts obtained during Crimbo 2008, and the place where these parts can be obtained has been closed off. The Rock Lobster is made from drops gained during the Unexplained Tremors event; its Live lobster component no longer drops now that the rock monsters have disappeared.
Mr. Store Familiars
These familiars are/were only available for purchase in the Mr. Store for a limited period of time. They are still available in the Mall, but for ever-increasing amounts of Meat due to the fact that these familiars effectively cost money (not Meat) to procure, as well as the fact that, like the "Limited Availability" familiars above, these hatchlings are only available for a limited amount of time, and cannot be unhatched after being used. Only active Mr. Store familiars may be purchased with Mr. Accessories for use in hardcore. The Leprechaun-Volleyball and Leprechaun-Gravy Fairy hybrid familiars have been always available in the Mr. Store for 2 Mr. Accessories, but are replaced with new, yet identically functioning, versions yearly.
