Error creating thumbnail:
/home/coldfront/domains/kol.coldfront.net/public_html/thekolwiki/bin/ulimit4.sh:
line 4: /usr/bin/convert: No such file or directory

Its been like this ever since the wiki moved to coldfront and they disabled ImageMagick for "security reasons". The image is fine, just the autoscaled version for the image page fails, the full resolution link, and embedding the image works fine. We can not thumbnail/scale images on the wiki unless the thumbnails are cached from before it was disabled (like on the trophy page, the older ones we can scale the pic smaller no prob, as the rescaled image was cached long ago, but scaling new ones in the same fashion fails with the same above error, so we have to manually upload thumb images for the trophy page. --JRSiebz (|§|) 05:14, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

Intrinsic Effects

From the Category page: "Intrinsic Effects are effects that persist as long as some condition is met, rather than for a given number of adventures. Most such effects are bestowed by equipping enchanted items, and typically persist only while that item is equipped." All the Gaze effects fit that description completely, and in game, they're listed under "Intrinsics". So, why did you revert my edits? --Erich 13:43, 30 August 2010 (UTC)

KINGDOM OF BUFFING

WTF. I can't have an informative page for my bot, but other bots can??? THIS IS BULLSHIT. What is wrong with you? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kinks (talkcontribs)

  • What are you talking about?! The only bot on the wiki with its own page is chatbot. That's it. I only said to restrict your buffbot listing to the buffbot page just like all the other buffbots. None of them have wiki pages. All their links go to official offsite webpages/forums pages hosted by the individual buffbot runners. I never said anything about removing your listing form buffbot, just that your buffbot does not deserve its own wiki pages just as none of the other buffbots do. Did you even read what I wrote? I have no idea what you are getting so upset about. --JRSiebz (|§|) 07:15, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

Here's the meta wiki page on it, I've tried to use it for equations before, unsuccessfully, maybe it's not enabled/installed in this wiki's installation? I found a whole bunch of info on it, just can't find a page that says "To enable/install this on your wiki do this..." --JRSiebz (|§|) 23:12, 20 May 2006 (CDT)

Kol Images

How do you tell if the kolimages template is in a image or not? (besides the fact that you can't see the template when you look at the image. --CG1:t,c,e 17:53, 9 July 2007 (CDT)

  • I hunt them down (and skip the hard ones for later). You can usually guess the filename of an image on the kol servers rather easily. For example, if it's a 30x30 image it's probably an item or an effect it's most likely in images.kingdomofloathing.com/itemimages/filename.gif, if it's 100x100, it's probably a monster/adventure images.kingdomofloathing.com/adventureimages/filename.gif, locations are usually in images.kingdomofloathing.com/otherimages/locationname/filename.gif, etc. Some other ones are a little trickier to find, and filename conflicts are a pain, like an 100x100 adventureimages/raccoon.gif and a 30x30 itemimages/raccoon.gif both "want" to be File:raccoon.gif on the wiki so the conflict table comes into play. Avatars are in otherimages/sigils/* (which I'm guessing stands for "signature(siggy) illustrations" or something). Things like outfits are in otehrimages, etc. I just find the image ( I tend to have a bunch o' tabs open to different directories ;-) ), pop in the template, then test the template's link to make sure I didn't goof, and off to the next one. Kinda boring ;-) --JRSiebz (|§|) 18:04, 9 July 2007 (CDT)
    • Actually, what I meant was not how you tell where it is on the kol server, but how you tell that the template isn't on an image page. Whenever I look at a image, I usually find the kolimages template already there. How do you find the images that don't use the template, so that I can add the template to it? --CG1:t,c,e 18:11, 9 July 2007 (CDT)

Pile of smoking rags

Not that I know about these things, but aren't you supposed to apply prot high-use instead of just sticking a table in there? It's still allowing me to edit rather than just viewing the source. --Bagatelle 16:44, 12 July 2007 (CDT)

  • It's not just you, just so you know. I seem to be able to edit it, too. --CG1:t,c,e 16:46, 12 July 2007 (CDT)
    • Adding prot high-use has exactly the same effect as sticking a table in the page - it only displays the notice. Actually protecting the page has to be done separately, and it seems the page itself got unprotected as a result of it being deleted/restored to remove spoiler edits from the edit history. --Quietust (t|c) 16:49, 12 July 2007 (CDT)
    • Actually prot high-use just adds in a table. I just customized one. And I did protect it and no one unprotected it, yet it's not protected anymore - Protection Log. Oh nevermind, what he said. :-P --JRSiebz (|§|)

I can't seem to access this page in the wiki, I keep getting a 400 Error. I think it has something to do with the URL, but I'm not sure. I tried using a different browser (IE) but it's still not working. Could you take a look at it? Thanks.--MaskedLihc 17:51, 31 July 2007 (CDT)

    • Nope. No dice here, either. Is there some way to move the page without actually going to it, or something? --TechSmurf 21:34, 31 July 2007 (CDT)
      • Something must have changed character-set-wise, server-side, or something, because I can't even (attempt to) create a page with a % in it (69% Illegal, 1000% Legal, You're Mom's Butt is 257% Fat, etc.) in it. I'm a big fan and a constant user of your Custom-a-KoL utility... and since I use it so much, I have a bone to pick about it :D Assuming you still update it, of course. Update to Discussion#Hagnk's Bricks

  • i'm having a problem updating this section. i believe it's some dumbass restriction on the size of POST requests imposed by my work proxy server. to prove or disprove this, i wonder if you'd be so kind as to split the Discussion#Hagnk's Bricks section into subsections at level three. or, at the very least, add a "===Summary===" header to the end. many thanks --Evilkolbot 06:55, 7 November 2007 (CST)
    • It's not your work proxy server - it's an "application firewall" (or whatever you want to call it) running on Coldfront and throwing invalid HTTP errors whenever you post some content it doesn't like (e.g. putting "--" on line by itself throws "400 Bad Request", and trying to preview User:QuietBot/src gives "501 Method Not Implemented"). Several of its more idiotic rules already had to be disabled to allow editing (and even viewing) several Wiki pages, and it looks like we've run into yet another one. --Quietust (t|c) 07:47, 7 November 2007 (CST)
    • ok, would you like the text i was trying to insert? i could message you with it in-game or email it to you. in summary it was a recommendation that the bricks data be hosted off-site and the pages removed. it looks as if, though, the person involved has been unable to restrain themselves from adding the rest of the data anyway. --Evilkolbot 11:45, 7 November 2007 (CST)

Why is the PAGENAME being used instead of triple quotes for bolding? --Raijinili 16:05, 31 August 2008 (CDT)
  • Self referential links get bolded. For example, a link to a page you are on gets bolded. We've kind of always done that It like that in that situation; it's kinda customary, like on wikipedia the first time they mention the pagename on the page it get linked/bolded with a wikilink rather than triple quotes, like if there was a "Boogers" page it would start "Boogers are blah blah blah". Well, the page ancient insane monk. got moved to ancient insane monk (studious) as I was splitting the monks up, so the link was still to ancient insane monk, and therefore underlined and not the desired bold. I could have changed it to ancient insane monk to do the same effect and that would have been fine, but it was late and ancient insane monk is slightly shorter, plus it has the bonus of keeping to work even if the page even get moved, even though it's not exactly expected to move again. "PAGENAME" just equates to "ancient insane monk (studious)" anyway. it can be changed back to ancient insane monk no problem if ya want. Enclosing in double brackets is also 2 less characters than enclosing in triple quotes ;-) --JRSiebz (|§|) 22:35, 31 August 2008 (CDT)
    • I know why it works, but actually, Wikipedia discourages such usage: "Do not use this technique to make the article name bold in the first paragraph; see the Manual of Style." --Wikipedia:Wikipedia:How to edit a page --Raijinili 19:10, 1 September 2008 (CDT)
      • Well then, I guess we do it because we always have here, I mean it feels like every page is like that, just some random pages Snowcones, Clans, a newer one line Hobo Power, even deep in a lot of commonly used templates do it that way, and it's how we headered the pages before we ever ever had any wiki templates (and used stone tools, too!) So I guess, habit? Wikipedia does say "Do not use this technique to make the article name bold in the first paragraph; see the Manual of Style.", but unfortunately, it doesn't reallysay why? Unless there's a half decent performance reason or something, it's not really worth anyone's time to check 5,000+ templates/pages to change 'em, but I guess i have gotten into the habit of doing it that way, i mean ancient insane monk is more efficient to type than ancient insane monk. Just be clear, I'm not attached to doing it the way I did, I just did it automatically, because that's how I/we've always had. --JRSiebz (|§|) 20:05, 1 September 2008 (CDT)--JRSiebz (|§|) 20:05, 1 September 2008 (CDT)

insane monks

Just to check, how did you determine that the two insane monks are actually distinct? Instead of just having randomized intro texts like hobos. --Flargen 01:18, 1 September 2008 (CDT)

  • I kind of just assumed they were because of the different descriptions, there are other areas with different monsters of the same names elsewhere, and it's not like another of the other monsters in The Haiku Dungeon have randomized descriptions, so why would this one be special? The only way to really tell is to get some numbers on combat frequency, For example if about 1/6 the combats of a large sample size of adventures were the each of the monsters (with the two monks counted individually), then the studious and the venerable are different monsters, else if all the other 4 monsters each show up 1/5 of the time and the two monks each both show up 1/10 the time, they are the same monster with a randomized description since their two 1/10s = the last 1/5. It can always be changed. --JRSiebz (|§|) 01:51, 1 September 2008 (CDT)
    • Monsters don't always have to come with equal combat frequency is the thing. Getting base encounter data for them and then using On The Trail would be the appropriate method. Which I can't do right now since I'm still in a 100% black cat BM run. --Flargen 01:56, 1 September 2008 (CDT)
      • Technically, you can Bounty Hunt and trade in the lucre for an odor extractor. --Raijinili 19:08, 1 September 2008 (CDT)
        • Odor Extractors give you On the Trail. And I'm not going to waste time spading the haiku dungeon in a BM perma unlock run. Don't really want to use odor extractors on my farming/spading multis, since that will just slow down their long overdue acquisition of olfaction. --Flargen 19:19, 1 September 2008 (CDT)
  • In 200 or so adventures in kolmafia, they listed nearly perfectly 1:1:1:1:1 with kolmafia counting both monks as the same, so it looks like I may have been wrong. We just need to check to see if each monk description show up about the same amount of the time, or if one is a special case, like maybe the challenge map or something. --JRSiebz (|§|) 20:10, 1 September 2008 (CDT)
    • I spent 161 adventures recording all my encounters. Posted here. I didn't get what you got, but with just 161 adventures there's a fairly large confidence interval associated with the figures. aka: more data needed. Maybe I'll have both my multis go haiku-ing tomorrow. --Flargen 20:17, 1 September 2008 (CDT)

Stuff and junk

Since you seem to have some knowledge of template coding, I was wondering if you had any ideas about this?

Also, I'm not sure what you mean by "makes it harder to reference" in your Discoveries edits. It turns out they shouldn't be centered anyways, though. I thought they were centered in-game, but I checked and they're not. They're left justified. Except in the case when you only have a single discovery in that discovery type, apparently. I've a multi with a single jewelrymaking discovery and it's shifted to the right a few tabs, but not centered. Go figure. Maybe I'll check into that later, see if becomes left-justified with another jewelry discovery that goes under a different header. --Flargen 03:33, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

Template request

I was wondering if you could make a template for the trophy thumbnails. I started to clear out the uncategorized images but most of the ones that are left are the thumbnails we use for the Trophies page because of the server's inability to generate thumbnails. I was wondering if we could make something like a derived KoL Image template in order to help tag and categorized them.

Also I just wanted to thank you for fixing that issue with the Newspaper template. I had seen the error and I started to look for what had gone wrong, but unfortunately real-life intervened and by the time I got back you had fixed it. Thanks for the help.--Toffile 05:25, 23 December 2009 (UTC)

That user originally created the page "Psyko" (in the global namespace, where it doesn't belong) with the content present in said user page. --Quietust (t|c) 19:43, 22 March 2010 (UTC)
Well, I deleted the original page, as it's not particularly useful nor interesting for the referring masses and so qualifies as a "vanity page", but was contacted in-game by Robert Plant, asking for the contents of the page (I don't think regular users can view old revisions of deleted pages like wiki admins can), so i dug it out and gave it to him on his wiki user page (though commented out/not displayed) so he could view it (maybe move the content elsewhere?), and I stated that he can use it in his own page if he wants, by explicitly stated that the user: space on the wiki is for registered wikians only. I believe I was clear, but who knows? The Shadow knows. --JRSiebz (|§|) 02:33, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

Also could you edit the Template:Item so that it adds around the familiar name ----Icon315 (|) 21:20, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

  • Ok. But in the past we tended not to link things from the in-game looking part of item descriptions. I know Potion Effect: does, as it does in game. I think the exception is Outfit:. I think we can make an exception for Familiar: as it would not crazily-annoyingly linkify the item block. I think there was a discussion a long time back about not wanting the item block to look too different from in-game and that linking everything possible there would create a not visually pleasing and easy to mis-click mess. --JRSiebz (|§|) 03:56, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

Soy cordial

When you put in the use message and listed an adventure gain of 35, your edit comment said "had ode on, but better than no use msg". Did you forget to deduct the adventures granted by Ode from this 35? I'm hearing people say they're not seeing anything over 32, and we're wondering if either an error was made or if it got nerfed. --Flargen 20:29, 1 June 2011 (UTC)

  • I just plopped in my use message as is, I may have been hurried for someone reason. Plus after I chuck in the template (which to most people in the confusing/hard part), even if it's just with stub or temp values, it's usually fine tuned by all the spaders in no time, as more wikiers find it easier to tweak a number on a preformatted page, rather than to do the whole thing from scratch. I tend to do "big picture" edits on new items, getting the whole things formatted and empty (which I can do kinda quickly), and then let other people fill 'em all in. Keeps me from cussing that some pages are being started all willy nilly looking, and keeps me from burning out on the wiki by being to completionist and trying to do too much by myself. Keeps me around, for better, for worse :) In other words, yeah, 32. I was a lazy bum who couldn't find the time to subtract :P I should have just put a "?" ;) --JRSiebz (|§|) 01:14, 2 June 2011 (UTC)

Recent Changes Breakage - Mr. Store

I just wanted to point out something I noted on the Mr. Store page that I believe to be related to the recent changes noted on the Main Page. In the table of past store items the bottom half shows the broken image (the frowny face in a frame) and then the item name with '(?)' after it. The pictures work on their respective pages, just not on the Mr. Store page. I checked in Firefox and in Chromium. Thought I'd point it out and put it on the discussion page there.
