The Prince's Ball (At the Canapés Table)

It is X minutes to midnight.

Initial visit:

The canapés table, being the place where all the snacks are located, is therefore naturally where most of the party-goers are located, alternating between pushing caviar into their mouths, and pushing inane small talk out of them. Consequently, while the possibilities for mischief are much broader here than elsewhere in the party, it will be more difficult to pull anything off unobserved.

Subsequent visits:

You return to the canapés table, maneuvering between the clusters of chit-chatting nobility to get within range of the food. Ruining someone's reputation is hungry work.

On minutes 20 and 10:

One of the servants comes out of the kitchen carrying a large tray of cannoli. Another servant helps him find room for it on the large snack-covered table.

Cinderella and the Prince take a break from dancing and move over to the canapés table for some refreshments.

Additionally, if this cannoli batch includes cinnamon filling:
Cinderella sniffs the air, and notices the cannoli. "Ooh! Are these cinnamon? I love cinnamon!" she says, and starts eating, ignoring everything else around her.

On minutes 30-26, 19-16, and 9-6:

Cinderella and the Prince are standing at the canapés table, conversing with the people around them, but mostly each other. And by 'conversing' I mean Cindy is letting whatever inane chatter forms in her head to fall out of her mouth at a constant rate, and the Prince is nodding and saying "uh-huh" as necessary.

On minutes 25, 15, and 5:

Cinderella and the Prince move to the dance floor and start dancing. Cinderella has never danced a waltz before, and is about as graceful as a drowned goat, but the Prince attempts graciously to lead her through it as she giggles brainlessly.

Baroness/butler movement:

At any time but three to eight minutes after asking the Baroness what troubles her:
The Prince's butler is standing over to one side, out of the way of the party, but near enough that he can keep an eye on things and alert the kitchen when stocks of food and champagne begin to run low.
Two minutes after asking the Baroness what troubles her:
The Baroness exits the dance floor and approaches the canapés table, where she has a short conversation with the butler.
Three minutes after asking the Baroness what troubles her:
The Baroness walks away from the canapés table, heading back across the dance floor.
The butler walks away from the canapés table and enters the bathroom.
Four minutes after asking the Baroness what troubles her (this permits stealing the butler's key):
The butler exits the bathroom, returning to the area near the canapés table. You see him putting a little brass key in his vest pocket.
Five minutes after asking the Baroness what troubles her:
The butler leaves the canapés table and walks across the dance floor, toward the balcony stairs.
Eight minutes after asking the Baroness what troubles her:
The butler crosses the dance floor and returns to his station near the canapés table.

Before taking the coin:

Someone seems to have left a silver coin on the table. Did they think they were meant to tip the Prince's waitstaff? How absurd.

Before taking the coin:

Take the coin.

You fill a cup of punch, set it down on top of the coin for a moment, then palm the coin as you reclaim the cup. It's always good to keep in practice.

Silvercoin.gifYou acquire an item: odd silver coin

Two minutes after asking the Baroness what troubles her, if you have a carnation:

Give your carnation to the Baroness and steal one of her hairpins

"One moment, Baroness," you say, taking the carnation from your hair. "Allow me to give you this, I think it will complement your dress nicely." You pin the flower above her ear, stealing one of her hairpins in the process. She smiles and thanks you.

Four or at least eight minutes after asking the Baroness what troubles her, having spotted the butler's key at the canapés, with a carnation and without the key:

Give your carnation to the butler and pick his pocket.

You approach the butler, and pluck the rose from his lapel before he can react. "My dear fellow," you say, "your boutonnière is wilting! We can't have that at such an important occasion, can we? Let me replace it for you."

The butler is flummoxed by the sudden attention and freezes up, allowing you to tuck the carnation into his lapel. You then give him a friendly pat on the shoulder while snaking the little brass key from his vest pocket with your other hand. "There you are, dear, that's much better."

"Er, thank you, madam," he replies. "I'm much obliged."

You hide your grin as you turn to leave.

With a carnation:

Give your carnation to the Prince.

"Excuse me, your Royal Highness," you say, giving the Prince a curtsey[sp], "but I believe your boutonnière is wilting.

Allow me to replace it." You pluck the rose from his lapel before he can get a good look at it, and replace it with the carnation from your hair."

"Er, thank you, madam," he says, giving you a bow. "I'm much obliged."

If you have placed something in Cindy's purse:

Ask Cindy to loan you her handkerchief.

"Oh dear," you say loudly, pulling a face. "I do believe I'm going to sneeze! Cinderella, dear, loan me your hanky, quickly!"

  • Cigar:

Cinderella opens her purse to give you her hanky, and a cloud of smoke and ash puffs in her face. She coughs and sneezes, flapping her hands wildly as the Prince retrieves her purse and the (now burned-out) cigar from the floor with a puzzled expression.

If the restroom soap was not doctored:

She retreats to the bathroom to wash her face. After a minute, she returns looking none the worse for wear, having managed to wash the ash from her hair and face.

If the restroom soap was doctored with carnation oil:

She retreats to the bathroom to wash her face. After a minute, she returns looking even worse -- she's managed to wash the ash from her face and hair, but now her eyes are bright red and puffy, and her face is blotchy, and she's sneezing even more violently.

If the Prince has also heard the disease rumor:
The Prince shares a startled glance with the man who whispered to him earlier. You do your best to not smirk openly.

Your score is now +X. [+1 normally, +2 if soap doctored, +3 if both soap doctored and rumor-tipped]

  • Syrup of ipecac:

Cinderella quickly opens her purse and hands you her handkerchief, which you mock-sneeze into as she discovers the bottle of syrup of ipecac. "Oh! What's this doing here?" she asks. The prince gives her a puzzled look.

Your score is now +1.

  • Laudanum:

If Cindy is not drugged with laudanum:

Cinderella quickly opens her purse and hands you her handkerchief, which you mock-sneeze into as she discovers the bottle of laudanum. "Oh! What's this doing here?" she asks. The prince gives her a shocked look.

If Cindy is drugged with laudanum:

Cinderella quickly opens her purse and hands you her handkerchief, which you mock-sneeze into as she discovers the bottle of laudanum. "Oh! Wha's this doin' here?" she asks. "Why're you in my purse, silly bottle?" The prince gives her a shocked and stern look.

In either case, if the Prince has also heard the opium rumor:

He and the man who whispered in his ear earlier share a glance, and nod to each other. It's all you can to to keep from busting out laughing.

Your score is now +X. [+1 normally, +2 if intoxicated, +3 if rumor-tipped, +4 if both]

  • Cinnamon:

Cinderella opens her purse to give you her hanky, and a cloud of cinnamon puffs in her face. She coughs and sneezes, flapping her hands wildly as the Prince retrieves her purse and the can of cinnamon from the floor with a puzzled expression.

If the restroom soap has not been doctored with carnation oil:

She retreats to the bathroom to wash her face. After a minute, she returns looking none the worse for wear, having managed to wash the powdered cinnamon from her hair and face.

If the restroom soap has been doctored:

She retreats to the bathroom to wash her face. After a minute, she returns looking even worse -- she's managed to wash the powdered cinnamon from her face and hair, but now her eyes are bright red and puffy, and her face is blotchy, and she's sneezing even more violently.

If the Prince has also heard the disease rumor:
The Prince shares a startled glance with the man who whispered to him earlier. You do your best to not smirk openly.

Your score is now +X. [+1 normally, +2 if soap doctored, +3 if both soap doctored and rumor-tipped]

  • Mouse:

Cinderella quickly opens her purse to give you her hanky, and a mouse jumps out. She shrieks and hurls the purse away from her. The prince, though startled, calms her down quickly, but the puzzled look on his face remains.

Your score is now +1.

  • Sleeping mouse:

Cinderella quickly opens her purse and hands you her handkerchief, and a (possibly) dead mouse falls out. She shrieks, freaking out a little. The prince, though startled, calms her down quickly, but the puzzled look on his face remains.

Your score is now +1.

  • Foaming mouse:

Cinderella quickly opens her purse to give you her hanky, and a mouse jumps out, wild-eyed and foaming at the mouth. She screams bloody murder, hurls the purse away from her, and leaps up on the canapés table, scattering food and glasses every which way. After a time, the prince manages to calm her down and get her back on the ground, but he's plainly ticked off at her for causing such a scene. You can't even remember the last time you saw something so delightful.

Your score is now +2.

  • Whiskey:

If Cindy is not intoxicated with whiskey:

Cinderella quickly opens her purse and hands you her handkerchief, which you mock-sneeze into as she discovers the flask of whiskey. "Oh! What's this doing here?" she asks. The prince gives her a surprised look.

If Cindy is intoxicated with whiskey:

Cindy opens her purse to lend you her hanky, and pulls out a whiskey flask. "Oh, whash thish doin' 'ere?" she giggles, slurring her words. The prince seems surprised, and gives her a disapproving look.

If the Prince has also heard the alcoholic rumor:

He and the man who whispered in his ear earlier share a glance, and nod to each other. You stifle a gleeful cackle.

Your score is now +X. [+1 normally, +2 if rumor-tipped or intoxicated, +3 if both]

  • Cow-creamer:

Cinderella quickly opens her purse and hands you her handkerchief, which you mock-sneeze into as she discovers the silver cow-creamer. "Oh! What's this doing here?" she says, holding it up.

The Prince gasps in outraged shock. "Aunt Agatha's favorite creamer! What in blazes are you doing with it?" he asks, grabbing it from her hands.

"I-I-I don't know! I've never seen it before!" Cinderella stammers.

"Well, it didn't just walk into your purse on its own legs!"

If the Prince has also heard the kleptomaniac rumor:

The man who was whispering with the Prince earlier gives him a slight nudge with his elbow and a meaningful nod, which the prince returns with an angry and disappointed expression. It's all you can do to not laugh out loud.

If the Baroness has agreed to conspire after receiving aspirin from you:

"What's all the commotion?" asks the Baroness, coming down the stairs. "I could hear the fuss all the way out on the balcony." Someone explains the situation to her in a low voice, whereupon her eyes light up, and she acquires the faintest of faint smiles. "Well now," she says, "now that I come to think of it, I did happen to walk past the door to the Lounge earlier in the evening, and noticed this young lady was in there alone, examining the curio cabinets. I suppose I ought to have mentioned it before, but didn't think anything of it at the time..."

Cinderella bursts into tears. "Are you accusing her, Baroness... Crunbrooke, wasn't it?" the Prince asks.

"Oh, please don't mistake me, your Highness -- I didn't see her take anything. But I wasn't paying attention, really."

"I see. Well, thank you for your input."

If you did not conspire with the Baroness:

"Honestly, I don't know how it got there!" she protests, with tears forming in her eyes. "Someone must be playing a trick on me!"

The prince gives her a very stern look, and hands the creamer to one of the servents[sp], with instructions to lock it in his study.

In all cases:

He hands Cindy his handkerchief, and says "Dry your eyes, girl, and we'll discuss this later. I won't have my party disrupted any further." He claps his hands and calls for the musicians to start playing again, and gradually everything drifts back to to its previous atmosphere.

Your score is now +X. [+4 normally, +7 if rumor-tipped or conspired with Baroness, +10 if both]

Slip something into Cindy's purse while she's distracted.

The following choice is presented, based on inventory:

You mentally take stock of your possessions and consider what might be the best thing to put in Cindy's handbag while she's distracted by the food.

The bottle of syrup of ipecac.

You slip the bottle of ipecac into Cindy's purse with one hand, while covering the action by reaching for a distant tray of crudités with your other arm. Nice and smooth.

The whiskey flask.

You slip the whiskey flask into Cindy's purse with one hand, while covering the action by reaching for a distant tray of crudités with your other arm. Nice and smooth.

The mouse.

You slip the mouse into Cindy's purse with one hand, while covering the action by reaching for a distant tray of crudités with your other arm. Nice and smooth.

The sleeping mouse.

You slip the sleeping (probably) mouse into Cindy's purse with one hand, while covering the action by reaching for a distant tray of crudités with your other arm. Nice and smooth.

The foaming mouse.

You slip the foam-drooling mouse into Cindy's purse with one hand, while covering the action by reaching for a distant tray of crudités with your other arm. Nice and smooth.

The cigar.

You slip the cigar into Cindy's purse with one hand, while covering the action by reaching for a distant tray of crudités with your other arm. Nice and smooth.

The cinnamon.

You slip the can of cinnamon into Cindy's purse with one hand, while covering the action by reaching for a distant tray of crudités with your other arm. Nice and smooth.

The laudanum.

You slip the bottle of laudanum into Cindy's purse with one hand, while covering the action by reaching for a distant tray of crudités with your other arm. Nice and smooth.

The silver cow creamer.

You slip the silver cow-creamer into Cindy's purse with one hand, while covering the action by reaching for a distant tray of crudités with your other arm. Nice and smooth.

Nothing.

You can't think of anything useful to hide in Cinderella's handbag. Meh. Maybe a more interesting prospect will present itself later on.

Having obtained cannoli from a drug-dosed tray:

Offer Cindy your 'customized' cannoli.

If Cindy is not present:

You look around for Cindy, but don't see her nearby. Turning, you spot her on the dance floor, waltzing with the Prince and giggling foolishly.

Hmph. Looks like your plan to poison her will have to wait a bit. [turn wasted]

Otherwise:

You sneak the pair of cannoli out of your purse and put them on a little plate while pretending to take some from the tray on the table. "Here, dear, try these," you say, offering them to Cinderella. "They're quite delicious."

Laudanum-laced, with regular cannoli filling:
Cinderella takes a bite of one of the laudanum-laced cannoli, and grimaces from the taste. "Ugh! They're very bitter! And they make my tongue go nub! I mean numb." She finishes the first one, and leaves the plate on the table.
After a moment, her posture begins to slump, and her conversation with the prince dreamier, and a little slurred.
Laudanum-laced, with cinnamon cannoli filling:
Cindy takes a bite of one of the cannoli, and looks delighted. "Oh, these are good! I love cinnammmm..." She trails off as her eyes roll back in her head, and she passes out across the table, to the consternation and uproar of the onlookers. Initially, this seems like a job well done, but when the Prince declares that the party is over, summons the royal doctor, and has her taken to his guest room so that he can personally see to her recovery, you're kicking yourself all the way home. [playthrough ends in failure]
Your final score was X points, reduced to 0 due to failure.
Ipecac-laced, with regular cannoli filling:
Cinderella eats one of the cannoli, and makes a little 'bleah' noise. "They're very sweet," she says. "Much sweeter than the others." You shrug as she leaves the second cannoli on the table, then mentally rub your hands together with evil glee, eager for the fireworks.
Ipecac-laced, with cinnamon cannoli filling:
Cinderella eats one of the cannoli, and looks delighted. "Oh, these are delicious," she says, finishing the second one. "The cinnamon balances the extra sweetness so nicely!" You smile -- not at her comment, but at the way she starts to turn green around the gills and gets an uncomfortable look on her face.

With whiskey, with Cindy present:

Pour some whisky into Cindy's glass.

You pour yourself a glass of punch, then take out your (well, it's yours now) flask and pour in a stiff dose of whiskey. A couple of people notice, but you wink at them and they just chuckle. Then, once no one is paying any further attention to your actions, you swap your glass for Cinderella's. She drinks it, and carefully supresses an expression of surprise and disgust, finishing the glass out of politeness. She would, you realize, make an excellent noble lady, but not if you have anything to say about it.

As you suspected, Cindy is a total lightweight when it comes to liquor. She starts swaying gently and slurring her words almost immediately.

With ipecac, with Cindy present:

Pour some ipecac into Cindy's glass.

Cinderella is so enamored by the Prince (and pretty oblivious to begin with), so it would be pretty easy to pour syrup of ipecac in her glass without her noticing. The problem is, everyone else standing nearby would definitely notice if you took an obvious medicine bottle out of your handbag and poured something into someone's glass. You'll have to come up with something sneakier than that. [turn wasted]

With laudanum, with Cindy present:

Pour some laudanum into Cindy's glass.

Cinderella is so enamored by the Prince (and pretty oblivious to begin with), so it would be pretty easy to pour laudanum in her glass without her noticing. The problem is, everyone else standing nearby would definitely notice if you took an obvious medicine bottle out of your handbag and poured something into someone's glass. You'll have to come up with something sneakier than that. [turn wasted]

With whiskey:

Spike the punchbowl with whiskey.

The chances of slipping anything into the punchbowl are slim to none, with everyone standing around chatting and gorging themselves on fancy snacks. And anyway, booze would be the most pedestrian choice imaginable. [turn wasted]

With ipecac:

Spike the punchbowl with ipecac.

That would be a positively hilarious way to put an end to this party, but no. Your target here is Cinderella specifically, not the entire crowd. Besides, the area around the canapés table is too crowded, and someone would be bound to notice. [turn wasted]

With laudanum:

Spike the punchbowl with laudanum.

Spiking the punchbowl with laudanum would bring the entire party to a grinding halt. You probably wouldn't get away with it anyway -- there's too many people around, babbling at each other and cramming snacks into their mouths. [turn wasted]

Take a piece of cheese.

You take a little cube of cheese on a toothpick from one of the trays and eat it. It tastes all right, for fancy foreign cheese that smells like feet.

If not already possessing cheese:

You take another one and put it in your purse. You never know what might come in handy.

Take a break and have some food.

You spend a little time eavesdropping on peoples' conversations while munching on some crackers. The crackers are much more interesting. [turn wasted]

Time passes.

It is X minutes to midnight.

Occurs at The Prince's Ball.

Notes

  • Cindy and the Prince are at the table between 30-26, 20-16 and 10-6 minutes to midnight. At other times, they are on the dance floor.
  • Making Cindy eat laudanum-doctored cinnamon cannoli ends the night early with a score of zero and entitles you to the Party Killer trophy.
    • Because of this, the face-stuffing message can only be triggered on minute 6 after having laudanum-laced the first cannoli tray and added cinnamon thereafter.
  • If you give Cindy ipecac-laced cannoli, it takes effect in 4 minutes if she ate both, or 8 minutes if she ate one.
  • You can give Cindy ipecac-laced cannoli twice in one playthrough, but she will not throw up the second time.
  • You can place an item in Cindy's purse twice in one playthrough, but she will not have a handkerchief to trigger a second reaction. If she had the purse at a throwing-up incident, she won't afterward.

The following three categories of text are triggered by various conditions and may award points.

Rumors

Six minutes after you spread a rumor about Cinderella, at minute 20 if the rumor was dispersed before minute 25, or at minute 10 if the rumor was dispersed in minutes 20-16, the Prince will hear about it:
  • Cindy is an alcoholic:

One of the Prince's friends taps him on the shoulder and whispers something in his ear. The Prince glances at Cinderella, and you hear him whisper "What? An alcoholic?" back at the man.

Your score is now +1.

  • Cindy is an opium junkie:

One of the Prince's friends taps him on the shoulder and whispers something in his ear. The Prince glances at Cinderella, and you hear him whisper "What? An opium addict?" back at the man.

Your score is now +2.

  • Cindy has a terrible disease:

One of the Prince's friends taps him on the shoulder and whispers something in his ear. The Prince glances at Cinderella, and you hear him whisper "What? What sort of disease?" back at the man.

Your score is now +2.

  • Cindy is a kleptomaniac:

One of the Prince's friends taps him on the shoulder and whispers something in his ear. The Prince glances at Cinderella, and you hear him whisper "What? A thief? Are you sure?" back at the man.

Your score is now +2.

Cindy's Behavior

At 16 or 6 minutes to midnight, Cindy's behavior with the snacks may bother the Prince:

Normally:

Cinderella picks lightly at the assorted snacks laid out on the table while chatting with the prince.

If you spiked Cindy's drink with whiskey and have not drugged her with laudanum or added cinnamon to the cannoli filling:

Cinderella picks lightly at the assorted snacks laid out on the table while babbling at the Prince, and slurring her words. The Prince seems a little put off by her obvious tipsiness.

Your score is now +1.

  • If you also spread a rumor about her alcoholism:
The Prince exchanges a glance with the fellow who whispered to him earlier.
Your score is now +1.

If you dosed filling with cinnamon, but haven't drugged Cinderella: Cinderella eats more cannoli, pretty much ignoring everything else around her. The Prince seems a little put out by this.

Your score is now +1.

If you fed Cindy one laudanum-laced cannoli: Cinderella picks lightly at the assorted snacks laid out on the table while muttering sleepily at the Prince, her eyes half-open. The Prince seems puzzled by her sluggishness.

Your score is now +1.

  • If you also spread a rumor about her opium addiction:
The Prince exchanges a glance with the fellow who whispered to him earlier.
Your score is now +1.

If you have laudanum-drugged Cinderella and dosed the filling with cinnamon:

Cindy stuffs more cannoli in her face. The Prince seems grossed out, not just by the rudeness, but by the amount of filling she's getting on her face.

Your score is now +2.

  • If you also spread a rumor about her opium addiction:
The guy who was whispering to the Prince earlier gives him a nudge and a "told you so" nod.
Your score is now +2.

Cindy Throwing Up

Additional text and score is added here if Cindy and the Prince are here and Cindy is due to throw up from having eaten ipecac-doctored cannoli (eight minutes after eating one, or four minutes after eating cinnamon ones).

Unlike other points in the game, you must be present when this occurs in order to earn full credit. Otherwise, you will get an alternate occurrence message and fewer points.

  • If Cindy has not thrown away her purse:

Cinderella's suddenly widen to the size of teacups. She turns away from the table, sticks her face in her purse, and makes a little "hurcch" noise. The Prince looks shocked. "Are you all right?" he asks.

If you had not doctored the restroom soap:

She runs to the bathroom, and comes back with her face freshly-washed, and looking none the worse for wear. You notice that she doesn't have her purse -- she must have found a wastebasket to ditch it in.

If you rubbed a carnation on the restroom soap:

She runs to the bathroom, and comes back sneezing violently, with her eyes red and puffy and watering. You notice that she doesn't have her purse -- she must have found a wastebasket to ditch it in.

Additionally, if the Prince has received the disease rumor:
The Prince shares a frightened glance with the man who was whispering to him earlier.

Your score is now +X. [+2 normally, +3 if soap doctored, +5 if both soap doctored and rumor-tipped]

  • If Cindy threw away her purse upon seeing a regular or foamy mouse in it:

Cinderella suddenly turns green and gets a crazed look in her eyes. She looks around frantically and, finding no other suitable receptacle, vomits copiously into the punchbowl. The Prince and his other guests are, unsurprisingly, quite shocked.

If you had not doctored the restroom soap:

She runs to the bathroom as servants hurredly remove the punchbowl and clean the surrounding area. After a minute or so, she returns with her face freshly-washed, looking much better, and offering her apologies.

If you rubbed a carnation on the restroom soap:

She runs to the bathroom as servants hurredly remove the punchbowl and clean the surrounding area. After a minute or so, she returns, sneezing violently, her eyes red and puffy. She tries to apologize to the prince, but it takes her a while to stop sneezing.

If the Prince has also received the disease rumor:
The Prince shares a frightened glance with the man who was whispering to him earlier.

Your score is now +X. [+4 normally, +5 if soap doctored, +7 if both soap doctored and rumor-tipped]
