Boxed Wine?

By my count, there are 36 barrels and 35 items. Furthermore, of the Basic Booze, "boxed wine" is missing (as of 12:17 EDT October 11 2005). -- Cyferpunk

Pattern?

It seems to me there has to be a pattern to the prizes. Someone suggested something like mine sweep, where each prize catagory represents the number of nearby exploding barrels. Why else have 36 barrels arranged in a grid? Could someone document the exact layout of the barrel contents. It shouldn't take more than one or two layouts to figure this out. I can do one tomorrow morning if my speed ascension goes like I expect. -- Crowther

this is what I got:

  • row 1: bloody mary, tequila sunrise, Knob Goblin superseltzer, Doc Galaktik's Homeopathic Elixir, jug-o-magicalness, jug-o-magicalness
  • row 2: salty dog, -46hp, -46hp, Knob Goblin superseltzer, suntan lotion of moxiousness, suntan lotion of moxiousness
  • row 3: -30 points, Knob Goblin seltzer, enchanted barbell, concentrated magicalness pill, bottle of vodka, bottle of whiskey
  • row 4: Doc Galaktik's Restorative Balm, a mimic, enchanted barbell, giant moxie weed, bottle of tequila, bottle of gin
  • row 5: fine wine, shot of grapefruit schapps, magicalness-in-a-can, moxie weed, -8hp, soda water
  • row 6: shot of tomato schapps, shot of orange schapps, magicalness-in-a-can, moxie weed, soda water, a mimic

I have 102 hp normally, and I just clicked down the rows from left to right. I hope this helps. --Spamantha 22:18, 11 Oct 2005 (MDT)

  • this is what I got:
  • row 1: Knob Goblin superseltzer, Doc Galaktik's Homeopathic Elixir, jug-o-magicalness, suntan lotion of moxiousness, mimic, wine spritzer
  • row 2: Knob Goblin superseltzer, mimic, mimic, suntan lotion of moxiousness, martini, vodka and cranberry
  • row 3: concentrated magicalness pill, enchanted barbell, bottle of vodka, bottle of rum, -20 HPs, Doc Galaktik's Restorative Balm

I was just about to add my results, but they just follow the above patterns. Here's my take: All barrels are in 3x3 blocks of 2x2 barrels. The blocks of prizes are only random in which column they fall in. They always fall in the same rows. Dangerous barrels are more common near the top.

  • The row of 2x2 barrels are top quality (best restorers, best stat booster, mixed drinks).
  • The next row of 2x2 barrels are medium (base booze, middle stat boosters, middle restorers).
  • The bottom row of 2x2 barrels are lows (shots of schnaps, mild restorers, lowest stat boosters).

--Crowther 15:17, 12 Oct 2005 (CDT)

I forgot to add, I also did left-to-right and top-to-bottom, so if the order matters my theory will fail. Thank for the help. I'm about to ascend, so I'll test my theory with my new character. I could use some premade drinks.

--Crowther 15:39, 12 Oct 2005 (CDT) Posted much later do to the red page of dead, CPU QUOTA EXCEEDED.

Ok, it worked. I just got two whiskey sours and 2 martinis for only 4 adventures, very useful! --Crowther

Sorry about the train of thought comments, I'm sure you can see why I haven't put anything on the page.

I've been looking at the arrangment of the 3x3 higher level. Using B=Booze,R=Restore,S=StatBoost the above examples are:

(pattern n.1)

BRS RSB BSR

and (pattern n.2)

SRB SBR BRS

When I did all the barrels, my pattern was (pattern n.3):

RSB BSR BRS

The only pattern I see is that all three rows are unique. However, with only three data points, if it is just random, the odds of seeing this pattern is 30%, with one more data point, the odds fall to 20%. I'm sure it's random. If you test it, you have a one in three chance of proving it is random. That's assuming I did my combinatorics right.

--Crowther 18:57 Oct 12, 2005 (CDT)

Well, since no one else seems to care and I finally had the adventures to spare (pattern n.4):

RSB BSR BRS

It's still each row is unique. --Crowther 13:49 Oct 17 2005 (CDT)

(pattern n.5)

BSR BRS RSB

Ok, the odds that this is random is getting smaller. I'll try to update the main page, if I can figure out how to word it and if the wiki functions. --Crowther 10:19 Oct 21 2005 (CDT)

I have 2 more patterns. The first one is (pattern n.6):

BXR BRS RSB

Where X=3 mimics, 1 explosion. Should be an S, if I had found any items there. I find interesting that this can actually happen.

The second pattern is (pattern n.7):

RBS SRB BRS

So I didn't find any duplicate row, which supports Crowther's theory. I have also found out that some patterns are getting repeated. Specifically (numbering patterns in the order they appear here), p3=p4 and p5=p6. I have also started seeing a pattern in the patterns, :-) though I'd need some more tests to affirm that they all follow some basic rules, and it's not like that by chance. --Pcentella 18:35, 18 November 2005 (Central Standard Time)

Got a strange adventure...

what.png

Not really sure what this is about...

Edit-after reading the forums, figured out what was up with it...and after reading more, still don't really know what's up with it... -rednwhite

  • That's the message you get when you try to break a barrel you've already broken (click on a barrel, the code runs and the barrel breaks, but you click on the same barrel again before the page refreshes showing it was broken), so it's mostly an effect of lag, or happy clicking. --JRSiebz | 23:04, 11 Oct 2005 (MDT)

Explosion information is wrong

The explosion info says the damage is 8-209 (half of your current HP). I assume this is supposed to say that the maximum damage is half of your current HP. If that were correct, it could not kill you, which is demonstrably wrong.

I suspect it was intended to say half of your maximum HP. I have not tested to see if that is a correct assumption.

--RyokoYahagi 11:49, 17 January 2006 (Central Standard Time)

The explosion information is still wrong. There does not appear to be a cap on damage taken - it seems entirely percentage-based. I've personally taken significantly more than the ~200 damage listed here quite often. --Crawly2 15:14, 17 April 2007 (CDT)

Explosion HP info is incorrect

When *Your Barrel A Splode*, it is not always half of your maximum HP. In my case, I have 40 HP and it's causing me 8-9 damage each time. Definitely not half my HP. Any ideas?

--TrickyBeta 20:31, 23 January 2006 (Central Standard Time)

Post exploding barrel data

My suspicion is that the exploding barrel has different max damage limits for each set of rows. The top pair hit me for up to 2/3 of my max hits on a regular basis. They don't always hit for that much, but that seems to be where it tops out.

Please post your HP, how much it hit for, and what row it was in. --RyokoYahagi 15:16, 5 April 2006 (CDT)

lost 377 HP out of 1000 just now. --Bottomer 15:30, 1 September 2007 (CDT)

AREA CHANGE??

I just spent 36 adventures smashing barrels (I'm killing time, ok? Stupid gloomy black mushrooms and weird moon), and I didn't get a single exploding barrel. I got three mimics, and the rest were the typical item drops. Can anyone confirm that the exploding barrels are gone? The character is a lvl 11 softcore nopath mongoose sauceror.

Here's the text from KOLMafia (I removed the encounter details) ((I started in the upper left, go down, then up the second column, then down the third, etc.)):

  • Er, there's 37 entries in that list... --Quietust 08:55, 9 June 2006 (CDT)
    • KOLMafia did bug out on the first mimic, so perhaps it recorded it twice? -- Morgalyn 11:53, 9 June 2006 (CDT)

Still Exploding Barrels

I've found a few exploding barrels today, though my character is a non-ascended level 8 Seal Clubber. Perhaps they're random (or have some set percentage of appearance)? If they are, it's entirely possible to not encounter a single one in 36 adventures. Or it could be softcore ascension, or something else that makes sense.

--Richter 17:53, 9 June 2006 (CDT)

Yeah, on the third day of testing a barrel ASPLODE. So I'm totally off my rocker and just had great RNG (for barrels) for two days. -- Morgalyn 23:49, 9 June 2006 (CDT)

Mimic layout problem

The restructuring of the page is good, but we lost the middle/bottom row mimic information. If I put "Varies by Row" for the level, I get that Combat template error again. We either need to do a batter job of fixing the combat template or reinstate the middle & bottom row mimics. --Gymnosophist 16:40, 2 September 2006 (CDT)

Clovers?

Two people have popped in to /hardcore to report getting a clover out of a barrel in a center row. Unclear whether it's always in the booze quad. --Jonrock 00:49, 4 October 2006 (CDT)

I just got a clover as well, in one of the two center rows. It was NOT my booze quad, but the one beside it, the one with Diet Cloaca Cola. I have a screenshot of it... whee! Clovers from the barrels! Hedonia 02:03, 4 October 2006 (CDT)Hedonia

I got one from the upper row, instead of decent booze... Aw. --Andemon 04:53, 4 October 2006 (CDT)

I found clover in the center two rows. It was with the restoratives. I checked the other barrels and there was just one clover. --Crowther 09:01, 4 October 2006 (CDT)

I found a clover in the upper left area, in place of a Homeopathic Elixer. --Thoby123 10:40, 4 October 2006 (CDT)

On my alt, I got a clover in the bottom row in place of a stat gainer (or, given my RNG luck, I should say that in the same quad I got a stat gainer in place of an explosion). So it looks like the current trend is "you just get one, and it could be anywhere". --Jonrock 11:57, 4 October 2006 (CDT)

I found a clover in the second 2x2 row area, in place of a Stat gainer. Also, Im in HC, just wondering if the clover in the barrel is tied to HC, since it seems that SC can get more clovers than HC from the hermit (Oct 4 - looked like 4 clovers for SC vs 2 clovers for HC) --Grimdel 13:00, 4 October 2006 (PST)

Cleared the barrel with twice today, confirming the "one clover in a random barrel" hypothesis. And got two clovers from the hermit in (ronin) softcore. --Hurax 07:13, 5 October 2006 (CDT)

I was going through the top two rows of barrels when I got a clover in the 2x2 barrel. I thought it was just a lucky occurence so I didn't think to take a picture. --Kaka Dooky 11:00, 4 November 2006 (CDT)

I just got a disassembled clover from the top center 2x2 area. I don't really know if that's anything significant, since I've only started adventuring recently(read n00b). Hope it helps, though! BTW I made a screenie in case anyone wants to check. --Rasolyo 09:21, 25 November 2006 (CST)

Diablo Reference

I think this is a poor reference, since you smash barrels in many games to get items and such. --Damuna 13:34, 8 October 2006 (CDT)

  • Fixed. --Jonrock 13:59, 8 October 2006 (CDT)

I got beaten up by exploding barrels...

I had 5 HP, and a top row exploded causing 23 damage...

--Toneotom 17:24, 11 October 2006 (CDT)

Multiple clovers per day?

JEDI_KNIGHTAMU902005 (#570950), a friend of mine, is claiming that he was getting 2-3 clovers per day from the Barrels during his 13th ascension. This directly contradicts what's on the page right now about "1 clover per day"... --'Ivan 07:13, 13 November 2006 (CST)

Scales with stats?

I have no hard data here, only gut feeling, but I seem to be getting more and more exploding barrels / mimics the higher my stats get. I used to hit the barrels for booze + stats at low levels, usually burning around 10 turns a day, and only occasionally got either of these; lately (currently L17), it seems that I get one practically every time I click a barrel. Today's count is 3 explosions and 4 mimics from 7 turns. Has anyone else noticed something similar, or is it just a case of subconscious bias? --GalenKemensen 11:19, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

  • i'd say that it was the other way round, i've got four explosions and four mimics at level 2 and ten straight drops with a level 40 character, so it looks like it's bias all the way. --Evilkolbot 12:03, 7 October 2008 (UTC)
