It's not specifically a reference to anything... Originally, I was going to add some Lovecraftian strangenesses to the paintings on the outermost edges of the map, on the basis that reality is "thinner" there. I eventually scrapped the idea, but couldn't think of anything else to do with this scene, so I left the tentacle.
