Talk:Black pudding (food)

From TheKolWiki

Trying to consume this item without any adventures gives the message:

You don't have time to properly enjoy a black pudding right now.

Does fighting the black pudding monster take an adventure? --Rincewind 19:42, 28 June 2007 (CDT)

  • yes (tested twice)--Acm 09:33, 3 July 2007 (CDT)acm

I didn't want to update the article yet without more info, so I'm sticking this in the discussion section. The description of this item says it's either a sausage pudding or some slime creature. Well the first time I used this item it was the latter. It automatically made me fight a monster with the same name and picture as the Black Pudding item. When I beat it, it dropped two more puddings. I thought this was some sort of infinitely dividing amoeba monster until I used the second one, which was just food. --Stevenskistg 06:10, 25 June 2007 (CDT)

The monster's page should be seperated from the food's page.--Etliay 04:19, 27 June 2007 (CDT)

My pudding results: 15 muscle, 11 myst, 10 moxie 13 muscle, 10 myst, 12 moxie 14 muscle, 11 myst, 10 moxie 15 muscle, 12 myst, 12 moxie 13 muscle, 12 myst, 10 moxie So, I would wager that it's about 13-15 muscle, and 10-12 myst and moxie per pudding. No idea of the standard number of turns, as I'm under the Opossum. Hope this helps! --Jimfromtx 23:28, 28 June 2007 (CDT)

I got 13 muscle on a muscle stat day, so I think it's less muscle. --Blazingthunder 07:25, 29 June 2007 (CDT)

  • If the timestamp on Jimfromtx's comment indicates when he ate the puddings, it's likely that he also ate them on a stat day. --Quietust (t|c) 16:08, 29 June 2007 (CDT)
  • Good point, and given the 25% boost in exp, that would mean that if you adjust the muscle I got, then yeah, 10-12 per stat sounds about right. Sorry about that! This is why I never edit the main page, only post on talk o_O --Jimfromtx 13:35, 9 October 2007 (CDT)

Eating black pudding while at 0 HP and Beaten Up seems to give me food and not a monster. Someone confirm?--Yubi Shines 23:37, 24 July 2007 (CDT)

  • I've only eaten three under these conditions, so I haven't got a large sample size, but all three of those puddings were foods and not monsters. --Southwest 13:16, 8 September 2007 (CDT)
  • Beaten Up prevents you from eating black pudding, now. I had Beaten Up and 12/180 HP (thanks to a plexiglass pith helmet) and got the "too beaten up" message; when I SGEEA'd away the Beaten Up status, I then successfully ate a pudding. --Terion 01:41, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
  • Worth mentioning in the Notes section that you cannot try and consume this and enter into a fight while full? Monsieur 09:24, 7 October 2007 (CDT)

Large Consumption

  • being the shallow trophy-whore i am, i've been consuming these for days now. i understand about rng love, (awww, yeah!) but it would seem to me that the combat percentage has dropped significantly. on day 1, (zero puddings), i came out with a net gain in puddings of five, today, (45 puddings) i didn't get a single combat. worth spading? --Evilkolbot 06:53, 25 January 2008 (CST)

I haven't been tracking the numbers, but 35% (as the main page says) feels about right. I fought five today, but other days haven't been as good. Question: can this be consumed from Chez Snootée with no adventures left? That might be worth noting on the main page. --Club (#66669) (Talk) 12:29, 31 January 2008 (CST)

Combat Modifiers

Do combat modifiers affect the chance of battling a black pudding? --VlaxanV 11:02, 24 April 2008 (CDT)

  • not as far as anyone has been able to prove. from experience i'd say that low base moxie and dark moons cause more fights, but that's unspaded and may be rng screwage. it would be very satisfying narratively if it was initiative that was the determining factor: get initiative, eat pudding, lose initiative, fight pudding. i've tried makeshift scuba gear and very low adjusted moxie and still had zero pudding days, though. boy do i hate those days. --Evilkolbot 11:54, 24 April 2008 (CDT)

It appears the combat modifiers do have an effect. I've been consuming pudding with Cantata, Musk, reodorant, and a 53lb hound dog at my side, and my current rate of pudding fights are slightly over 50%. Current numbers are 144 consumed, and slightly more than 74 fights (a few were eaten/fought before the trophy was known). --Babyscarface 17:50, 30 July 2008 (CDT)

Wait, that's actually 25%. Math is hard. Never mind. --Babyscarface 18:07, 30 July 2008 (CDT)

Feast of Boris

I have been eating these for only a few days so far, but I think that today (FoB) I got more combats than usual. And this isn't just because I could eat more, it seemed to be roughly 50% chance rather than 35% Has anyone else noticed an increase today, or is it just blind luck..?--Scutterman 06:47, 25 April 2008 (CDT)

  • blind luck. i got two fights straight off and no more. --Evilkolbot 06:50, 25 April 2008 (CDT)

In he last two days I've tried wearing my meat farming getup while eating my puddings, and got 5 and 4 fights. Maybe luck, but just something to try.--Deathless Assassin 05:24, 1 May 2008 (CDT)

I've been wearing mine just about every time I eat the pudding and I have gotten anywhere between 0 and 6 combats a day. Misstrain 10:01, 1 May 2008 (CDT)

I have just got the lucre manual, so I'll post combats I get. maybe someone should start a table of moons against the combats they get? Anyway, I always wear my item farming gear, since, until recently, I was after duct tape. It hasn't semed to effect me in any noticeable way.

Combat Percentage

Someone mentioned they thought it might be tied to moxie and the moons. Dunno how true that is, but today ronald was full(all black) and grimace was empty(all white, all white sattellite on right side) and I got NO combats while eating them. It's only 5, but more moon data might be usefull? --Plater (t|c) 19:59, 27 April 2008 (CDT)

Well, I ate 5, got no combats today. Moons were Image:smoon4a.gifImage:smoon6.gif which is opposites (not taking minimoon into account), just like Plater's example.--Scutterman 02:52, 30 April 2008 (CDT)

I'm not one to complain about the RNG, but I have eaten 10 black puddings in the past two days and gotten 0 combat adventures. Is ANYONE getting black pudding adventures these past three days? --Nyl 186 08:49, 30 April 2008 (CDT)

I got 3 combat adventures yesterday and 4 combats today. Misstrain 09:17, 30 April 2008 (CDT)

Today I got 1/5 combats. And how many do you guys eat/day? It's confusing.--Eniteris 18:13, 30 April 2008 (CDT)

I eat five a day. Today I got only one combat. Misstrain 09:59, 1 May 2008 (CDT)

Well, just read this in the may 23rd 08 version of the "120 minutes with..." show transcript:
Q: Is there a way to change the frequency of pudding fights?
A: I honestly can't remember.
http://forums.kingdomofloathing.com:8080/vb/showthread.php?t=152476
Well, at least it isn't a definate "No" :P --Scutterman 08:03, 24 May 2008 (CDT)

Well, regarding combat frequency, I spent about a month eating pudding and tried out various combat modifiers before eating while going for the trophy. Not sure if anyone cares about the data, but I had it recorded in KoLmafia sessions anyway. I've included the date for additional data in case the above moon-related speculation needs testing.

Date (Combat Modifier): Fights/Puddings Eaten
May 05 (0): 2/7
May 06 (+5): 2/7
May 07 (0): 5/10
May 08 (0): 6/11
May 09 (0): 4/9
May 10 (+15): 8/13
May 11 (+15): 3/8
May 12 (+15): 4/9
May 13 (+15): 2/7
May 14 (+15): 1/6
May 15 (+15): 3/8
May 16 (+15): 4/9
May 17 (0): 10/15
May 18 (0): 1/6
May 19 (0): 3/8
May 20 (+15): 2/7
May 21 (+15): 3/8
May 22 (0): 1/6
May 23 (+15): 3/8
May 24 (+15): 3/8
May 25 (+15): 2/7
May 26 (0): 3/8
May 27 (0): 3/8
May 28 (+15): 1/6
May 29 (0): 2/7
May 30 (+15): 4/9
May 31 (0): 1/6
Jun 01 (+15): 1/6
Jun 02 (0): 2/7

29 values, split fairly evenly between no combat modifier and +15. Ignoring the +5 date, I had 43 fights out of 108 puddings eaten (39.81%) with no combat modifiers, and with +15% combats running, I had 44 fights out of 119 puddings eaten (36.97%). In total, 89 out of 234 puddings eaten resulted in a combat (38.03%). Scutterman's data above seems to show 86 fights out of 226 puddings eaten (38.05%). Worthstream's data resulted in 14 fights out of 40 puddings eaten (35.00%). Other clear data points throughout the thread list 30 fights out of 100 puddings eaten (30.00%), though this may have a reporting bias.

Based on the transcript quotation above, I suppose that they probably did not code a complex pudding frequency variable based on moontides or frequency modifiers or some other factor. With this in mind, looking at all the data available here, the 219 fights out of 600 puddings eaten in various situations resulted in a combat frequency of 36.50%.

Given that the data available is sourced over at least a three month period, and came up with close results all around, I don't see a modifying factor of any significance here, but I do suppose that the chance of a black pudding fight could be a bit higher than initially estimated. --Iaruk 19:45, 2 June 2008 (CDT)

That data is pretty uniform, however, it only deals with positive combat modifiers. I just encountered 7, I believe, Black Pudding monsters while wearing a Ring of Conflict and not otherwise modified, versus the day before not encountering any without said accessory. It could just be RNG, but I think it deserves further investigation, especially considering the positive combat modifier leading to a non-combat in the Sleaze area of Hobopolis. It could absolutely be that I'm lucky today, but it's not beyond Jick et al to include a mechanic like this. --HaphazardJoy 01:40, 11 August 2008 (CDT)

I didn't track my eating conditions, but my final numbers when I qualified for the trophy were: 471 consumed, 240 fought, combat frequency 33.8% --Volante 21:26, 3 December 2008 (UTC)

'Eat Some'

Has anyone else tried eating all of their puddings via the 'eat some' link? It seems that this might prevent fighting the pudding 'tall, and has for the two days I've tried it. All I'm looking for here is a positive "I have fought a pudding using the 'eat some' link" statement from somebody, unless we can get divine dev providence saying "you won't fight with 'eat some'" --Unnatural20 07:03, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

Happened to me this am. Ate 3, got combat and 2 left over. -- sulfur 14:34, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
Some more discussion on the forums. Short version: it seems to work properly, but not give any feedback about the number you successfully ate. --MoreUmlaut 15:24, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
