- "Mustard gas and roses" is a reference to Kurt Vonnegut's 1969 novel Slaughterhouse-Five, in which the recurring phrase is used several times to describe foul-smelling things ranging from a drunk's bad breath to the stench of corpses.
- The last line of the description is a reference to William Blake's poem, "The Tyger," which appeared in his 1794 collection Songs of Experience. The poem's first stanza is:
