- The name is a pun on a poltergeist, which is a type of ghost that manifests itself through unexplained noises.
- An installment from the late 80s of Gary Larson's comic strip The Far Side once featured a couple haunted by a poultrygeist.
- Though it may not have been intentional, the Poultrygeist is a reference to a web-comic called Something Positive. The date where it was referred to is February 26, 2004.
- The Unglued set of Magic: The Gathering had a card named Poultrygeist. Unglued was a parody set with abundant references to M:tG's most famous and expensive cards and to various elements of the game. (see Poultrygeist card here: [1])
