  • Patent leather is leather with a glossy, high-shine finish.
  • The entire description is a pun on the dual meaning of 'patent' as either being the aforementioned leather, or 'snake-oil' medicine sold at the turn of the century known as 'patent medicine' for the fact that the formulations were patented .
  • The part of the description referring to looking up people's skirts refers to an exchange in Grease, where one character claims she wasn't allowed to wear her patent leather shoes because people could see up her skirt in the reflection.
