Notes

  • This is available from the council once you reach level 9.
  • You may type Inventory at any time to see what items you have managed to pick up inside of the leaflet.
  • You may type exit to return to your (KoL) inventory, or just click on a link in the top pane.
  • Rather than typing North, you can type n as a shortcut. Similar shortcuts exists for the three other cardinal directions.
  • There are several easter eggs hidden in the strange leaflet, but none are necessary to complete the quest: Homestar Runner fans might try typing DENNIS. CONSULT GUIDE give interesting results as well.
  • There is also a special easter egg, which affords a healthy bonus to all substats. It is a reference to the oldest computer adventure game of all, the Colossal Cave Adventure, originally known simply as "Adventure" - you can find this game's homepage at http://www.rickadams.org/adventure/. There are a few magic words that have become famous, and one which is less famous but a major spoiler even in that game...
  • The special easter egg used to be xyzzy, and when typed in, the message "There is nobody named Xyzzy here". The secret code was changed to PLUGH, and remained so until this quest's revamp on February 13, 2006.

References

  • This majority of this quest, namely the grue, refer to the game Zork I: The Great Underground Empire. The beginning of the game starts with getting a leaflet. Zork is considered to be the game that started the text adventure craze.
  • If an unrecognized command is made the parser will return one of several replies such as "Do what with the what, now?" and so on. One of the messages is "You don't know what words mean, do you?", a reference to an oft-quoted line from Mr. Show with Bob and David Season 4, Episode 8 "Like Chickens, Delicious Chickens" in which David says the line in reference to the unbelievable anatomy claims that Bob's character makes.
  • When you type Consult Guide, the resulting text is a reference to one of the most famous guides of all, the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy (itself made into a text adventure).
