This is a battered steel cigarette lighter that a soldier was carrying for good luck. Maybe it was the lighter his father carried in the previous war, or that his girlfriend gave him in a tearful farewell. Every time he looked at it, seeing the sun glint off the metal, running his thumb over the countless dings and scars, he thought of his friends and family back home, and wondered if he would ever see them again, if he would make it home alive from this terrible war.
